I’m re-reading “The Culture Map” by Erin Meyer, which I think is a super interesting and well written book. The only thing that pulls it down imo is that she went on to co-write the Netflix company culture book, “No Rules Rules”, and that book pissed me off.

The LONG version of the talk I did yesterday (2 hours) - I probably need to learn more on audio post processing...

What is the easiest way to create a YouTube video of a talk, given a windows machine with too much ram and CPU’s, and just sitting at a desk with a good mike?

The only time I completely lost my temper at work was when some folks deliberately sabotaged some other folks, and when I stepped in and tried to reverse it they threw me under the bus too.

To quote Past Patricia: “If a colleague comes and asks you for help, you help them. I don’t care what you think about internal politics. This is your coworker asking for help. You step up.”

Oh dear Twitter is a dumpster fire. Any time I go to have a look at my mutuals the comments are the most hateful, vile crap. Imagine paying 44 billion dollars to turn the local pub into trash heap.

@mattblaze I set my account to private but still a guy managed to have a rant about me a couple of weeks ago. It’s so sad, I really used to enjoy it. With all its flaws.

Patricia,
@Patricia@vivaldi.net avatar

@mattblaze and even that bit largely broke when he added a login wall for tweets. I never meant for my speech to be in a walled garden/trash heap. But here we are. But I said what I said, and so it’s all in there, and maybe someday someone will buy Twitter for a dollar and do something nice with it.

Israel is just becoming unhinged.

“Knesset to hold preliminary vote designating UNRWA a terror organization”

That is the UN organization “United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA)”.

I’m struggling to comprehend this. How does Israel imagine the aftermath of this conflict? Its relationships with other countries, with any country?

These are rhetorical questions, I’m not sure I want to know tbh.

Poor folks following me for tech stuff and get a thread on my thoughts on right wing erotica… oh well.

Patricia, to random

What I find really funny about the whole “trad wifes” thing is that these famous women that portray it on social media are literally working women, their job is to portray this image, that’s how they get paid. And also… I feel it’s underplayed… this is sort of a fetish thing they’re doing. And I don’t mind that. But then it’s so weird for me to see folks taking it seriously. These women are playing a role for an audience (quite specific audience often) to get paid.

Patricia,
@Patricia@vivaldi.net avatar

There are, I’m sure, a whole slew of actual “trad wives”, but once you’re a “trad wife influencer” you’re just a woman with a job. And when you lean into the camera and use that husky voice… girl… you’re in a particular line of business. And more power to you. Get that money.

But I still think it’s funny

It’s like children who can’t tell the difference between the actor and the character.

Patricia,
@Patricia@vivaldi.net avatar

I just see the whole “trad wife” as erotic fiction for men who are afraid of actual women. And of course there is a massive intersection here with all sorts of hate groups. But I really struggle to have a grownup conversation about what I see as right wing erotica. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Patricia,
@Patricia@vivaldi.net avatar

Maybe I’m being mean… I can see that this kind of erotica could have a broader appeal, I guess… it’s just often mixed in with some really weird/hateful stuff so… I guess I assumed you had to have a certain political standpoint to find it sexy… but what do I know?

For me homophobia and transphobia would be an instant mood killer. And that seems to be a staple ingredient in this genre.

Every time I hear this I just love it. And it shows a thing I’m sure has a name in linguistics, it’s easier to understand the accented foreign speech if the accent is of your own language. Also once you hear it it’s hard to unhear (maybe you need to know a little bit of Spanish)

We need more people from the social sciences in tech. We need people who can approach messy human data with proper analysis. Because us nerds tend to like our data clean and structured, and when it isn’t… we are often not at our best.

I have never seen an organization where communication between devs was excessive. And I cannot imagine what that level would need to be at for it to be necessary to rein it in.

If you are solving for too much communication or collaboration I posit that you’re not only solving for the wrong thing, you’re actively going to make everything worse, the org, the product, the culture, every single thing.

Patricia,
@Patricia@vivaldi.net avatar

@tylerdave … deadlines… that’s a whole other rant 😅

I have thought probably 20 times over the past few days “Patricia, this is very harsh and if it were you you would be very upset” and yes, I would. But I land at this every time:

The author I’m sure is very sensitive to criticism of their work, but their work is literally made to affect other people. To change their entire day to day. Teams broken up, folks losing their jobs, all sorts of pretty drastic changes. To coddle their feelings seems disproportionate to the effect they are actually trying to produce in the world.

If they are successful they will change the day to day of tens of thousands of people. So a certain level of honest analysis is not only fair, but to be honest, sorely lacking.

@ThreeSigma early 2000s there were a bunch of books that more open endedly described “stuff that worked for us” but as anything that morfs into Management it tends to become more prescriptive, less flexible and orders of magnitude more sure of itself.
