@ramsey I finished watching the final couple of episodes in the season/series just now. Such a great story to add to the larger universe, and so well done overall.

I’m also enjoying the darker story telling lately and showing a lot more of the “on the ground” reality and internal workings of the empire that the movies couldn’t really dive in to.

    @divya at this point, I’d root for other countries to start enacting similar policies. Then we’ll see the US companies funding efforts to ban TikTok and others step back and re-evaluate if that’s really want they want.

    Also, we could stand to have fewer multi-national conglomerate style corporations.

    You know what would be really cool? Plex, but federated and open source.

    I like that Plex lets users bring their own media servers/libraries to share with friends all with a single account. Except it’s a centralized platform and as the last year has shown, their for-profit interests push development of their first party streaming channels and the media server side has suffered.

    I want to see something truly democratize that experience. Let friends connect together from their own servers and have the experience of a single super library. One viewing/browsing experience, and no matter which friend has that movie or tv show episode you can seamlessly watch it.

    Hey #SFBA friends 👋

    Does anyone know of any #coworking spaces in the Mission / Potrero area in San Francisco?

    I’m in need of a space for something like 4-8 weeks (still figuring that out) with a dedicated private space (I’m a manager = lots of meetings/video calls). I may also have a coworker in need of a space as well.

    I’d love to avoid WeWork if I can, but I honestly don’t know what else is out there that’s not a shared hotdesking / open-plan situation only.

    I guess this is how does these days.

    First they require in-person , then they relocate business units from one location to another, and force those who can’t uproot their lives to leave.

    The Apple location in isn’t going away. But they intentionally forced 121 people to choose between moving to , or lose their jobs. Make no mistake, this is a layoff.

    Never mind the fact that is hostile to anyone with a uterus, or is not cishet—why the hell anyone would move to that state? If anything, Apple should be shutting down their Austin office, and paying for people to relocate to a state that better ensures their safety.

    ryanboswell,
    @ryanboswell@sfba.social avatar

    @drahardja it’s not exactly the same situation, but years ago Univision laid off most of the group I was a part of. A few folks who lived in NYC and Miami where they had big corporate offices were able to apply to other jobs but the rest was distributed around the country and didn’t have that option.

    But they informed us in early Nov, with Jan 31st as our termination date. As engineers, they needed us to keep our web properties up until another group had time to migrate things to their own system. But our boss said other than emergencies, we were free to do whatever we wanted.

    So I got almost three months of being on the payroll with effectively no job, plus the full severance because I didn’t leave before my termination date. I had found a job mid-December, but said I couldn’t start until the end of January.

    My guess is the folks who don’t move to Austin will have a similar experience, in Feb they’ll be given a termination agreement with April 26th on it.

    ryanboswell,
    @ryanboswell@sfba.social avatar

    @drahardja yeah, I’d say the folks at Apple probably will still be expected to do their jobs until April though, since the team itself isn’t being disbanded. So it’s not quite as cushy as mine ended up being but still gives you more time to get an alternative lined up.

    And at least with it being high profile, other companies may step in and try to recruit folks from that team. As much as I dislike much of the AI hype and B.S. these days, their skill sets are probably fairly in demand because of it.

    ryanboswell,
    @ryanboswell@sfba.social avatar

    @drahardja Fair enough, I guess it is rare for companies to bring those roles in house, Apple likely only did because of the privacy issues of non-employees listening to those recordings (and protecting their privacy-focused brand).

    17 hours ago my wife and I watched a 4K movie streaming it for the internet, 20GB in less than 3 hours

    Times sure have changed, looking into our past months' traffic: 4.5TB. And that is just watching TV, playing games, and our phones backing up data to the cloud.

    ryanboswell,

    @wyri I would kill for a provider that allowed me to use 4.5 TB in a month. We’re capped at 1.2, so intentionally have to downgrade streaming quality to stay under 😞

    What the hell. The 737 MAX series seems to be very poorly designed, with a LOT of cut corners. I think whatever trust the FAA representatives have deemed appropriate to delegate to Boeing for self-certification needs to be revoked immediately. There should be an audit of all the designs that were not directly examined by the FAA representative for standards compliance and fault analysis.

    The gall of Boeing to ask for an exemption from safety standards. I hope the FAA tells them to kindly go fuck themselves.

    And lest your bias cloud your judgment, replace the name “Boeing” with say, a China-domestic aircraft manufacturer that has this defect (also remember the auto-trim system that caused two planes to crash 5 years ago, killing all their passengers). What would your opinion be on such an aircraft?

    How is it that the Messages data store is still allowed to balloon in size until there’s no space for anything else left and the device grinds to a halt and refuses software updates? Because it forces people to buy larger sized iPhones and iCloud plans, sure. But seriously? This is with Messages in iCloud enabled. I shouldn’t need local copies of /anything/, certainly not 50GB worth. Where’s the ‘offload attachments’ option?

    ryanboswell,
    @ryanboswell@sfba.social avatar

    @stroughtonsmith yeah, that’s definitely a huge problem

    I ended up buying myself some time a few years back (and again earlier this year) by finding where my Mac stored those files and running all the images through an image compression app. It seemed to work with cutting 1/3 of space down the first time and it stayed that way, so presumably iCloud picked up the changes and synced them through to my other devices.

    Sadly, the app I use doesn’t work on the new HEIC format. So the most recent round didn’t make nearly as much of a difference.

    There have been at least two major crashes involving a Cruise car tonight in San Francisco. One of them was with a fire truck. Be careful, they might be driving even worse than before

    ryanboswell,
    @ryanboswell@sfba.social avatar

    @SafeStreetRebel Cruise’s statement is honestly awful.

    How on earth do you have a system that can’t figure out a giant fire truck in the opposing traffic lane and is driving towards you needs you to GTFO of the way? Even brand new human drivers can put that together.

    Also, I 100% don’t buy that it couldn’t detect the siren sooner (and act accordingly until it knew what direction it was coming from). Even modestly cautious human drivers know you don’t enter an intersection if you even think you hear a siren for exactly this reason.

    Either they lied or (more likely) their system is willfully negligent in safety protocols, which should come as a surprise to … no one.

    Autonomous cars are a blight, and it is the private-profit-maximizing opposite of what we need in dense, urban areas (i.e. more pedestrian spaces, fewer cars, more transit).
