Year one of RFF was amazing in both accomplishment and community. Many new and durable relationships for artist and listener interaction and support were forged. The experience has been unbelievable.

It was fueled by solo bloody mindedness which was not sustainable at scale.

After a year of trying my best to bring constant positivity, artist advocacy and community to the feeds, exhausted, overwhelmed and unable to see a viable path to continue RFF as it should be, shutdown was an option.

I'd like to thank every single one of you that advocated on my behalf, advised, amplified signal, donated, and shared what the project has meant to you.

The RFF community is so welcoming, uncompetitive, so empathetic, and so down for a kind word.

With less worry on a few basic needs, I'm hoping for the space to better define RFF processes, devolve tasks, contribute to better community organising tools and still grow community.

I went too hard, not wanting to lose any project momentum.

I ask for your understanding as we work through better boundaries.

This may mean less availability and new initiatives, or having to push back or better clarify some of the many small things per artist or task that accumulate into big time as we've scaled.

Not overall less commitment, but smarter scope. Any continued time or material support offers will be very well received.

The foundation is set, the ethos is strong, the community is growing. Let's get the balance better to sustain.

@fennifith Important points of difference for the webring and RFF is they can be discovery tools outside of the still small (and as of this moment quality voer qauntity) but increasingly fragmented world of what if "bolt AP onto everything".

While the context is community being fedi participating, the audible and discovery layers works outside of fedi via regular web and protocols. Artist support links, something we manually and intentionally apply to every track also can transcend the fedi. 1/

Social media including Masto Inc indeed don't much need to foster organic collaboration. Fedi's scale to date has mostly allowed for healthier, less competitive and more supportive social experience for some artists.

The actions of a consolidating few are troubling for that to continue and the barriers of entry and costs to sustain against larger players are a real paradox for even trying to play the numberical "more" game for more listeners and users in the discoverability equation. 2/

We tried all the fedi group tools last year desperately trying to have visible yet safe comms between artists for station initiatives and opportunities. Microblogs and feeds at scale are increasingly tough for organic community.

To that end RFF are embarking on a co-dev pilot with Bonfire for modular and safe community organising, scheduling and sharing tools that might be discretely or simultaneously local, federated, private, public or in between to fit the community, not a behemoth API. 3/

One of the things we love about seeing organic intentional community interactions for music and art is it is generally less about the curator/platform/list/sharer/count/etc and properly focused on the music and artist, support, comradery, act of sharing, and resonance.

Any chance to keep that away from algorithms just wanting the numerical activity and fleeting connections to sell in a loop of ick is a win for small (or more) artist agency and probably also impactful visibility. 4/

Our experience and observation from a decent sample of artists is there is real power in quality of interaction and durability of relationships and supportive community rather than vapid empty and often gamed stats and numbers pitting us against each other.

As you allude, this can be very expensive in human costs to co-exist against the constant pressures of fragmentation, clout culture, otherism and surveillance capitalism.

We are all in this together and small can be big, ymmv and all. ❤️ 5/

There are multiple blocks of instrumental in the form of soundtrack and ambient works on our Specialty channel each day.

While not instrumental per se, the 24/7 Comfy channel has quite a few fans that recommend it suitable for working to.

Coming up on one year of existence it is wild to think about the numerous collaborations and relationships that have emerged in the fedi as a whole but also a fair few via RFF discovery and connections.

We've had the honour to play new works that exist now because of such connections.

Collaborative works, remixes, production, mastering, video, web and streaming, writing, voice work and so much more we can't possibly see it all and don't have to. It's rad is exists.

@tarrenvane Track or album art is not at all necessary to submit.

We are asking that if it does exist to please have it embedded in the submitted audio files or to not send a massive image file we have to shrink, scale, and load into our station system for every track.

We need to throttle extra bits like that imminently so that we might be able to sustain the core RFF service going forward. Good chance to highlight a small thing that avoiding multiplying will help us out.
