I used to think ignorance drove injustice but now I think it’s denial — the human capacity to create and believe in stories collectively is our greatest blessing and deepest curse

radhika,
@radhika@sfba.social avatar

@plantarum @seachanger Someone talked to me about this too. From an evolutionary perspective, we had to belong to a group to survive. So our brains tend to prioritize human connection over everything else, even truth/facts.

"The lapse raises questions about communication between the DTSC and the water board — two sister agencies under the umbrella of the California EPA — whose cooperation is vital to protect public health and the environment.
“The fact that DTSC has sat on these documents for 44 years — shameful doesn’t begin to describe it,” said Janet Johnson, co-chair of the Richmond Shoreline Alliance."

No shit. California's department of Toxic substances control has known radioactive waste has been strewn around popular parks like Albany Bulb but has said nothing for the last FOUR decades.

The water board is the one who is making it more expensive for every average user to use water while literally doing nothing about high water use farmers & ranchers who use water for almost free of cost.

I went to a Turkish restaurant and I told the auntie ‘no rice please’ and she didn’t really speak English but she said ‘no no rice’ so now I have rice but hey it’s actually amazing rice (and genuinely one of the best Turkish restaurants I’ve been to, as good as in Turkey omg)

She also reminds me of all the Turkish aunties I know

(It’s called Muma Kitchen, west side LA)

the anti-woke folk are obsessed with not wanting to feel guilt, and they project it on children as a means of virtue signaling, as in “white kids shouldn’t be made to feel guilty for being white!” but isn’t this the hallmark of the sociopath? inability to empathize and have remorse? how do you look at our jagged, murderous histories giving rise to the jagged murderous present and take only from all that a righteous refusal to empathize with other human beings and feel things?

radhika,
@radhika@sfba.social avatar

@seachanger This spoke to me, because I woke up thinking about how ridiculous it was that heliocentrism was considered blasphemy. That everything had to revolve (literally) around humans for certain people to feel 'safe', or not-dysregulated.

Jay-Z's "My First Song" is in 3/4, right?

Jay's flow is in triplets, but when I try to count the beat I feel a 4/4 sometimes and a 3/4 others.

I don't know much about music theory and time signatures, so help me understand this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=colv2Wy2q7E

radhika,
@radhika@sfba.social avatar

@docpop On a quick listen the bass is on a slower 4/4 - with the main bass notes on the 1 and 3 of the bar. And the bass pattern is over 2 bars of 4/4. Then the synth is playing triplets over each note in the 4/4 - that wouldn't be notated as 3/4, but as a bar with a '3' over it. Not sure how to write that in text, but there's a diagram here: https://www.hoffmanacademy.com/blog/what-is-a-triplet-in-music/ Is that what you meant?

radhika,
@radhika@sfba.social avatar

@docpop Yes mathematically they're equivalent. Just a question of which scale you use to divide up the same chunk of time.

Here I've written out 4/4 and 6/8 together, with the 6/8 counting inside the rectangles.

When I write I tend to use triplets, so that's probably why I saw it that way! But the 6/8 version might be more standard.

Still have my Canon EOS 500 from the, um, '90s and there's a roll of unfinished film in there. Bought some CR123 batteries to be able to get the film out (hope it wakes up). Moved to DSLRs in 2001, so this could be an interesting time capsule moment.

    San Francisco doesn't need a zoo. The city spends $4m a year on this. The director (on a $339,500 annual salary) seems to treat the place as her own personal fiefdom, giving her daughter a paid internship and hiring her fiance to perform concerts. And animal carers have consistently complained about conditions for the animals.

    People on Twitter are debating whether a person using uncommon words like "delve" are trying to sound smarter than they are, or worse, are ChatGPT bots, because "normal" people don't talk like that.

    You don't have to get upset, or embroiled in the debate. Not worth the time or attention. But I'll share some important context as your friendly neighborhood Nigerian 🙋🏿‍♂️

    Many Nigerians have bigger English language vocabularies and better command of grammar than the typical American or English person

    Instant Band Night is a party where musicians who have just met are asked to form a band and perform a song in five minutes. It sounds like a ton of fun and the next one is happening tomorrow (March 14th) at the East Bay Community Space in #Oakland. Guests aren't required to perform on stage, so you can choose if you want to be in a band or not. Masks are required, which I think is great. https://www.eventbrite.com/e/instant-band-night-25-pi-day-2-pie-harder-tickets-797053387137 #InstantBandNight

    Oh I am ready for an expose of Jay Shetty.

    "Much of Shetty’s spiritual education took place not in India but in Watford, an orbital town outside north-west London, they say. He was there not because of a spiritual discovery in college but because he grew up in the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (also known as Iskcon or the Hare Krishna movement)."

    Listen to Michigan's doing a mass call (or they're on this mass call, I think) on the Uncommitted movement.

    Starting now. Tuning in to see what it's about: https://actionnetwork.org/events/listen-to-michigan-and-beyond-mass-call-for-uncommitted/

    radhika,
    @radhika@sfba.social avatar

    Already more than 300 people on the call! Hasn't even properly started yet. We're listening to music.

    They've shared links for anyone who would like to phonebank in Minnesota and Washington.

    MN (voting Mar 5): https://actionnetwork.org/campaigns/minnesota-uncommitted-phone-banks

    WA (voting Mar 12): https://www.uncommittedwa.org/action

    radhika,
    @radhika@sfba.social avatar

    Some interesting takeaways from yesterday’s mass call about the movement:

    • Biden hasn’t been hearing the antiwar protests. But he’s paying attention to the Uncommitted vote.

    • The Listen to Michigan campaign reached about 1.1 million voters in 3 weeks (by phone and text). Minnesota has 4 days left, so volunteers are urgently needed to phone and text bank.

    • They reached so many people who didn't even know voting 'uncommitted' was an option. People who are against war, against genocide, but didn't know about channeling that dissent through a vote in the primaries.

Since @taylorlorenz is now out here attacking, misquoting, deadnaming and dishonoring dead transchildren on her next clout chase to fame, it’s time to get into the predatory and delusional behavior across Clubhouse and Twitter that got her FIRED from NYT.
