Remembering Alan Turing, died on 7 June 1954, victim of prejudice and ignorance 💔 He was a mathematician, logician, cryptanalyst and computer scientist and is widely considered to be the father of computer science and artiticial intelligence. He was also homosexual in a time when homosexuality was illegal. After his conviction he was given a choice between chemical castration and prison. He chose chemical castration, and later chose to kill himself. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Turing
@nixCraft Let's see how it goes when they tell the motherboard vendors they will need to pay for multiple gigabytes of flash memory to store that model.
This is why you shouldn't be obsessed with Linus Torvalds, Richard Stallman (RMS), Stormy Peters, Alan Cox, and other figures in the open-source or Unix or Linux communities. 😂
@nixCraft Seems like lots of bad/unlucky decisions along the way leading to much lost time. And QT with all of that migration works, seems like quite the limiting factor.
@nixCraft I've got a T-shirt that says, "I used to be a people person then people ruined it." Its mostly true, aside form the claim I used to be a people person.
I guess I'm strange. I don't tell lies to get a job, but instead tel them this: "I have excellent people skills" and that is true. I've very good with people, but that doesn't mean I like them.
On the other hand, at the same time, I do care about people, but long ago gave up on them ever acting intelligently, with rare exception.
Here is why relying on IPv6-only VMs can be problematic. In 2024, github .com still does not support IPv6, only IPv4. 🤡 I'm now redeploying VM with IPv4 with special IPv4 tax from AWS. Please host your open-source project using modern git services like GitLab or others. GitHub is so outdated. no ipv6. ugh.
@nixCraft Hahaha I have a Wi-Fi clock at work that depends on a wireless hotspot I bring to the office. The other day it wouldn't pick up the weather. I went through hours of troubleshooting, including a factory reset, only to realize I hadn't unlocked the hotspot's SIM card after it restarted previously 🤦♂️
@nixCraft I've had trouble with a lot of things just not supporting IPv6 at all.
But if you really want to use it, wasn't there a way to wrap IPv4 addresses to IPv6 addresses? You could just manually put in DNS entries in the hosts file to avoid paying the extra if so. (Though they would also have to be manually updated if they ever change.)
@nixCraft A new feature of the social media age. No one can remember anything for more than a week or so because by then another 100 horrible things have popped up to distract us all.
@nixCraft The example with cat is less efficient (one extra process), but it is more composable (if you wanted to put something before the grep, you could)
