This is the strangest playoffs I can remember. For the last three rounds, the best looking team from the prior round has looked overmatched in their next series. Feels like Dallas is dancing as fast as they can to be down 10.

For those in my TL who followed a discussion in which a Usenet era (c. 1989-91) document introducing modern Hermetic (as distinct from Jewish) Kabbalah in relatively accessible terms was discussed: unfortunately, the source found in that thread turns out to be incomplete. Fortunately, a further search revealed that the author set the text as an illustrated PDF and offered it as a free book in 2001. So here is a direct link to that PDF for Colin Low's Notes On Kabbalah.

Please do not reply to the above post to dispute any of the following:

  • spelling of Kabbalah
  • its relation to the original Hebrew Jewish corpus and practice
  • its value or validity
  • basically any other esoteric nerd shit
  • just fucking don't
  • seriously

For those who are interested in related topics, I can also recommend the Secret History of Western Esotericism Podcast aka SHWEP. Well informed academic approach, non sensationalistic.

“The universe is expanding, and faster now than it did in the past. Scientists don't know why, but the leading explanation is that the universe contains something that has a repulsive gravitational effect - it pushes the universe apart instead of pulling it back together. This phenomenon is called dark energy.”

@Sheril "or, we've biffed a bit of math or observation somewhere along the extremely long chain of reasoning it takes to get to this conclusion."

But, the universe is certainly mighty weird, and is under no obligation to be sensible

I'm on Jesse Jarnow's fabulous Good Ol' Grateful Deadcast this week to talk about my second Dead show, 8/6/74 at Roosevelt Stadium. At 1:01:40 or so, I mention a mystery that has haunted me for decades -- a curious sequence of notes that Garcia played several times that night, and throughout his career, that I've never heard anyone else mention. https://www.dead.net/deadcast/mars-hotel-50-pride-cucamonga

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@stevesilberman I'll be listening for it, it's certainly very familiar and I think I'm used to hearing it mostly in deconstructed/spacy jams.

Best Eyes EVER!

The funky jam between the end of the Tiger melt and the start of Scarlet is among my all time fav Dead moments, the theme recurs only two other times I know of

It's legitimately interesting to see how often volunteer moderation/server leadership is seen as a vulnerability or a problem in spaces where unpaid open-source dev work is positioned as normal or ideal.

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@kissane @luis_in_brief yep I had one of the earlier paid forum moderator jobs working for Dynamix/Sierra Online in the late 90s, a gig I got largely because I already had experience with online communities. Surprisingly fun job for a couple years, running beta tests and getting into the design side as time went on

zeruch, to jazz
@zeruch@mastodon.social avatar

There was a period in the first half of the 90s where straightahead/post-bop #jazz structures were married (successfully) to very vascular, propulsive rhythm sections, and this is no exception, from 1991:

Herbie Hancock: piano/keys
Wayne Shorter: saxophones
Stanley Clarke: bass
Omar Hakim: drums

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@zeruch this was the period I was just getting into live jazz and lineups of this type were catnip for my ears - Crazy People Music era Branford Marsalis Quartet being my specific entry point. It felt very fresh but was clearly directly in the classic jazz lineage I was just learning to appreciate. This lineup holds up wonderfully well, but how could it not with that group of killers?

okay here's my midweek hot-take-free finals content for ya

  1. there's every reason to think this should be a good close series. No outcome would shock me except a sweep either way.

  2. Specifically, both teams have the players to guard the other team's best guys at least reasonably well (with the "no one stops Luka" caveat).

  3. there's a clear expectation among analysts and hoops heads that the BOS strategy will be to focus on stopping Kyrie above all. So watch for that in game 1

🏀 🧵

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@noirlover on top of all that, which I agree with - Boston has ZERO identity or personality as a team - this just feels to me on a gut level a bit like the 2011 mavs run where they came in super hot to the finals. It seems like Dallas should win games that are close at the end, so can Boston come into the endgames with big leads? I kinda doubt it

Notes on 6/3/76 from @bourgwick

All his 1976 notes here: https://jessejarnow.com/2018/08/deadfreaksunite-1976/

I'm interested in making a best of June 1976 mix. All input welcome!

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@4CPcomics I think this June tour and the April 1978 tour (both notably in theaters) are the best mixes and recordings for that Donna-forward idea, which I love; and '76 Dead has a smoothness to it, and Garcia's voice is better, so it's a lovely thought.

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@4CPcomics and I do think Crazy Fingers is the headline of the year. It's a sublime, unique A+++ Garcia/Hunter masterpiece that immediately disappeared until '82 after a handful of mostly superb performances, each featuring that remarkable outro jam, and when it returned it was never at that level. It's fair to say IMO that every '76 CF is better than any post '76 version by far, though I love a few of the latter era versions despite their relative clunkiness.

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@4CPcomics not counting her own songs: Candyman, Looks Like Rain, It Must've Been the Roses, High Time, Music Never Stopped. In '76 particularly, Crazy Fingers and Scarlet. Cassidy esp in '76. Those are the ones that just jump to mind.

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@4CPcomics the Orpheum one from July is probably my favorite despite the crappy tape, but you can't go wrong. Even at that sluggish 6.3 opening show it's fully formed and lovely.

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@noah_s @4CPcomics she probably sounds good on almost any version from June or July that you pick, but I am pretty convinced that the last two runs of the June tour (4 each at the Tower and Auditorium Theaters) are a clear step above the rest of the tour, perhaps excepting 6.9 Boston. It makes sense - they'd gotten enough reps with the lineup and material to play fluidly again, both relaxed and energetic. There are good moments earlier in the tour but that end chunk just elevates to my ear

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@4CPcomics I almost listed that one but was trying to keep it to a reasonable number. It's great. Most of the slower Garcia tunes have a Donna harmony part and they're usually great.

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@caravan @4CPcomics certainly.

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@caravan @4CPcomics ah yeah. Good call. And comes a time was played a lot in 76 including that lovely version out of crazy fingers
