Holy wow, Dot and Bubble. I don't know that the previous iterations of the show - or any show for a family audience - would have been as bold. This one is absolutely not holding back.

@ben Seems like it took some inspiration from the BlackMirror episode Nosedive.

In June 1999, Larry Page said this about his ambitions for Google: "We think we can make search a lot better than it is now. To do the best job, it requires artificial intelligence. The search engine must understand the question being asked, and understand everything on the Web."

Say what you will about Google, but its goal has always been to have AI running google.com. Except that today's AI doesn't "understand" anything; it's just very good at parroting human words.

@ricmac Having AI understand the question to provide better search results is a good goal. But also having AI provide the results… maybe not.

> In their rush to cram in “AI” “features”, it seems to me that many companies don’t actually understand why people use their products

Manton’s drive to add “AI” features to micro.blog is related to this. He doesn’t seem to get that a decent-sized portion of his customer base are creative industry types threatened by OpenAI’s actions or people who thought micro.blog would be a safe haven during a relentless AI Bubble

mcg,
@mcg@social.lol avatar

@baldur I am one that has cancelled my subscription over this. For me and for others I’ve chatted with, it’s not the inclusion of AI that’s the big issue here. It’s the deference to OpenAI over SJ. A couple of similar takes in the past already had me on the fence about leaving. This only solidified it.

A single-user server should not require so many resources to run. 1 vCPU and 1 GB of RAM should be plenty.

mcg,

@ramsey We need lighter weight services for messaging and the Fediverse.

Now that I have my first company computer since before COVID, my use of Linux and BSD will be more extracurricular.

On Friday I kept the personal laptop running OpenBSD all day because it's better behaved when it comes to reliably suspending and resuming.

Again, if you haven't run OpenBSD on the desktop in years, things have come a very long way.

mcg,
@mcg@social.lol avatar

@passthejoe I assume WSL is completely out of the question?

Stop putting “AI” into everything!

When was the last time a feature like this was shoehorned into so many unnecessary places?

mcg,
@mcg@social.lol avatar

@Mrfunkedude Talking more from a tech angle. Actual work to add features that mostly no one wants.

Hang on, if we don't let Olympic athletes fuck during the games, what is even the point of them spending grueling hours getting good at their sport?

Do you think the Greeks didn't know about wrestling as foreplay??

mcg,
@mcg@social.lol avatar

@Binder I’ve never understood the issue with them having fun at the Olympics. As long as it’s all consensual, what’s the big deal?

1/5 For the last two years I’ve been working on Plinky, sharing my work publicly while the app has been in beta.

Today it’s finally ready to go live in the App Store, and I’d like to not only share the app with you but share more about why I built it.

What is Plinky?

@mergesort This looks interesting. Planning to do highlights? I guess this has it’s own sync backend and not iCloud? Also noticed this in the App Store image. I guess that should be iPad?

Worst part of the Apple iPad thing today. Apparently no more Folio Keyboard.

📚 Finally found my pet peeve with Kobo. It was not too easy.

I wish books not purchased from Kobo would sync across devices. Seems like all my previously bought books load with no issues, but do not sync.

I could load them on multiple apps, but reading progress will not update.

mcg,
@mcg@social.lol avatar

@maique I think you can do this with the Kobo using Calibre, but then you’d need to manage Calibre.

mcg,
@mcg@social.lol avatar

@maique It can sync between Kobo “devices” but not the app.

There are plenty of valid concerns about this new org, but as @ehashman says the idea that a 501(c)3 is somehow a place to hide money is bonkers.

mcg,

@rysiek Thanks for pointing to this thread and WTF. We really do need a strong Mastodon alternative. GTS has been on my watch list for a long time, along with https://github.com/jointakahe/takahe . Really wanted Takahe to make it since it’s the only one that supports multiple domains. Development has really slowed for it however.
