On mastodon is there a way to search on ALL instances? Or something similar? 🤔

@podiboq @jeannie Search pulls from an index of the instance’s federated timeline, which consists of all posts "known" via federation with other instances. Relays used to be a good way to boost federation, but sadly all of the well-connected ones have shut down. The good news is that we’re already federated with hundreds of instances.

@podiboq @jeannie The only way to do a comprehensive search across the entire Fediverse would be to index and store all of the Fediverse content, which no single instance could ever conceivably do (we’d all need entire datacenters per instance!). This is just part of the deal with a federated setup, and a trade-off with more centralized setups that already have all of their data in one place. I wish I had something more helpful to say, though!

@mihobu I do see a few in the logs (115 out of 53K requests since the last rotation at 1715693583), all tied to one of the servers in the rotation. I've just rebooted that box and will keep an extra eye on things!
