@podiboq If the instance has a relay then it pulls posts and accounts from the firehose of the fediverse and not just those accounts known to the instance. I don't know if this instance has a relay or not but a relay is how you accomplish that.
That being said, it won't pull from instances blocked at the instance admin level but if a server is blocked by the admin there is probably a good reason and you probably don't want to interact with that instance anyway.
@jeannie uuuu nice. I had no idea this was a thing. Searching on social.lol is limited to the instance I guess. Maybe @adam can clear this up or activate this relay thingy if it's not dangerous or if it's not making him work three times more :)
@podiboq@jeannie Search pulls from an index of the instance’s federated timeline, which consists of all posts "known" via federation with other instances. Relays used to be a good way to boost federation, but sadly all of the well-connected ones have shut down. The good news is that we’re already federated with hundreds of instances.
@podiboq@jeannie The only way to do a comprehensive search across the entire Fediverse would be to index and store all of the Fediverse content, which no single instance could ever conceivably do (we’d all need entire datacenters per instance!). This is just part of the deal with a federated setup, and a trade-off with more centralized setups that already have all of their data in one place. I wish I had something more helpful to say, though!
