In February, I announced that I had hired myself to work full-time for democracy. So, here's an update: It’s not great. I don’t think it’s sustainable, which is fine. I’m not sure democracy is either.
This is the first episode of Ball of Thread, a podcast where Marcy Wheeler unwinds the story of what brought America to the brink of fascism. The video contains nearly all the source material.
I hope by now that you've heard the intro to the new Ball of Thread podcast series with @emptywheel on the attack on our democracy that has brought us to the brink of fascism.
I want to point out the clip we open the series with. Trump's lawyer argued in the Supreme Court that Trump could assassinate his opponent if he feels like it.
This has gotten far less attention than Trump's propagandists inventing a Biden put a hit on Trump from FBI boilerplate.
All on his own, @charles_gaba has raised more than $8 million for Democrats, $500,000+ in 2024 alone. We talked to him about what inspires him and talk about how his work inspires earlyworm.
"How much of the money does the PAC give to him? Who knows? So I decided to look it up. I started looking at Open Secrets & the FEC & I found that in some cases, only 30% or less of the money they raise is actually going to actual candidates."
One way for Democrats to show they're sufficiently alarmed is to say that Speaker Mike Johnson pulls another stunt like going to Trump's trial explicitly to violate a gag order, MTG can have him. https://www.signorile.com/p/mike-johnson-should-be-threatened
@Elucidating Yeah, I get that if you think that's what the election is all about, I get it. Anything that can end the atrocities would be good. I just think it's clear who would be worse. You may not.
