No algorithm can replace human wisdom and analysis.

But no algorithm will need to if we have already abandoned — wholesale — a millennium of critical reading and thinking skills.

@Daojoan I have been saying since at least 2016 that I consider this to be the greatest threat to democracy. Without critical thinking there is no democracy, as it can only be based on considered thought. Without it, the liers will always win.

Heat pumps and induction ranges are two strong examples of products that are better environmentally and better products than their gas/oil competitors, for almost everybody. (EVs will get there, but they’re not there yet.)

Because carbon emissions are free, it’s important that low-emission new products be clearly better than the polluting status quo. It’s a high bar, it’s not fair, but I’m glad we have heat pumps and induction ranges as a model.

languageservicesco,
@languageservicesco@mastodon.social avatar

@ewhac I'm not an expert, but this explanation helped me. Heat pumps do not produce heat. They take heat from their surroundings, concentrate it and then use it to heat your home. This is different to a gas boiler, for example, that is producing heat by burning a fuel. Heat pumps are simply moving heat from one place to another, hence the efficiency in terms of power input to output. I hope that is technically correct!

What do you like better about Mastodon and the Fediverse compared to other social media?

languageservicesco,
@languageservicesco@mastodon.social avatar

@Em0nM4stodon No algorithms, it isn't Twitter, it's more grown up.

Every couple of months I get slightly annoyed by Zotero and look for other reference managers and come to the conclusion that others are far more buggy!

Why don’t we have a reference manager that’s more — modern? Why can’t I take notes like I would in a good text editor? The way to add notes is clunky, I can’t easily see what papers have cited the current paper? Generating notes from my annotations is always not intuitive? Am I missing something here?

@academicchatter

languageservicesco,
@languageservicesco@mastodon.social avatar

@aspiringcat @academicchatter I have to agree with the three replies so far. There should be a way to get an up-to-date summary of all my notes at the tap of a button.

Just attended a coaching on "Making Good Decisions" for academics. After 60min of "don't be too perfectionist", "just think about the next step", "be more compassionate with yourself", we started discussing where all this pressure is coming from, and someone asked "isn't the whole system broken, then?" and I asked "should we actually stop trying to fix our mental health and BURN THE WHOLE F**KING PLACE DOWN?" and the coach went: "Of course, that would actually be healthier". 🤡

@academicchatter

languageservicesco,
@languageservicesco@mastodon.social avatar

@SemAntiKast @academicchatter This has been my attitude for a while now and I did a podcast on it a couple of years ago. Instead of providing employees with courses to help their mental health and instead of suggesting that people do things for their mental health, just treat them properly so their mental health doesn't get worse! In any other area of health, the advice would be to stop the thing that is causing the problem, not just try to negate the effects.

I don’t want an AI created playlist.

I don’t want an AI curated recommendation.

I want music chosen by a human person who speaks and loves music with every fibre of their being. Music that I might love. That I might hate. That isn’t safely predicted by the sum of everything I have liked before.

I want the imperfections goddammit.

I fucking live for them.

@FantasticalEconomics @dsmith @dragfyre @edutooters This was my first thought when ChatGPT became mainstream - this may be an opportunity for a lot of bad assessments to be improved. However, it won't work for everything. If you are assessing the ability of a person to write an academic text in a foreign language, it is difficult to see how to do that without them writing said text. But that kind of assessment is probably a small minority.

languageservicesco,
@languageservicesco@mastodon.social avatar

@dragfyre @FantasticalEconomics @dsmith @edutooters I don't think it is about encouragement or not. There will always be a proportion of students who will (need to) use anything that will help them get better grades, so I think it is about making sure that assessment is actually effective. What do we want to test? Can we have confidence in the results?

@elmerot @eugenia_diegoli @_bydbach_ @linguistics @academicchatter Just had a quick trawl through a thesaurus and failed to find any good alternatives for the idea of "attempt", a nuance I really consider to be essential for some situations.

languageservicesco,

@elmerot @eugenia_diegoli @_bydbach_ @linguistics @academicchatter And I have just intentionally put the word "attempt" into the book chapter I am writing on blended learning 😁.

Hey there! 👋

This account is here to help answer questions about Mastodon and the Fediverse.

If you have any questions, feel free to reply or message me and I'll try to find you answers.

Especially interested in helping beginners and non-technical people, there is no such thing as a silly question 👍

(By the way, as someone just asked, I do have a website full of tips and help for beginners at https://fedi.tips)

languageservicesco,
@languageservicesco@mastodon.social avatar

@feditips I'm trying to find people and hashtags to follow on Mastodon. The platform is clearly still developing, but there don't seem to be many hashtags in my field. I was wondering whether the hashtags shown when you search for them are from one instance or across all Mastodon instances. It seems to me that the latter would be a huge improvement to help the fediverse develop.

languageservicesco,
@languageservicesco@mastodon.social avatar

@feditips This is awesome, thanks for the link about groups. I have one follow-up though. The page refers to putting the followed groups into lists so that they don't flood your home column. When I try to follow the instructions, it doesn't seem to work for groups, only for individuals. What am I doing wrong do you think?

languageservicesco,
@languageservicesco@mastodon.social avatar

@feditips I wrote too soon. I don't see the possibility to add anyone I am following to a list. I am using the web interface, by the way.

languageservicesco,
@languageservicesco@mastodon.social avatar

@feditips Trying to actively find the answer myself, I found that clicking on the name of the group in the Home feed does take me to where I can add the group to a list, but it doesn't work from the following list in the profile. The way to hide the list from the Home feed is also different to that page based on my experience using the web interface just now.

languageservicesco,
@languageservicesco@mastodon.social avatar

@feditips Now all I need is to find how to access the list!

languageservicesco,
@languageservicesco@mastodon.social avatar

@feditips Not a problem. I am grateful for the support. Software changes. Maybe I did something wrong.

languageservicesco,
@languageservicesco@mastodon.social avatar

@feditips There is nothing on the right of my screen. I eventually found it in the right column near the bottom but I had to click on something first to open up the list of options. On the mobile at the moment, so I can't check exactly what I had to do.

languageservicesco,
@languageservicesco@mastodon.social avatar

@feditips That is all working fine and as you describe. It's a great way to keep the home feed more manageable.

languageservicesco,
@languageservicesco@mastodon.social avatar

@feditips Thinking about it, it is probably where you were describing. I was actually picturing something attached to the right side of my screen area though. The actual column is way off the right side, so it didn't feel like that was where you meant. And, of course, it won't be there either if you have done any exploring, editing profile or other stuff that appears there as well.

languageservicesco,
@languageservicesco@mastodon.social avatar

@feditips Yes I am. Not sure I knew there was a single-column mode, but that would explain a lot.
