Here are the much anticipated 10 images taken by the Euclid "Dark Matter Hunter" space telescope.

The images and accompanying papers were presented today at a gathering by the Euclid Consortium. We have seen the first image before.

These are part of the Euclid Early Release Observation program. The first results from Euclid’s wide and deep main surveys will take until fall, first cosmology papers at least until late 2025.

These papers are not part of #ESAEuclid's core cosmology mission, but explicitly of a pre-survey science showcase. So no cosmology in them! We'll have to wait until 2026 for that.

But 100s of non-cosmology science papers can be expected until then.

I think that construct simply doesn't exist in German. It's all "bis dahin", meaning both by and until.

Today in my Astro Sci-Comm class we tried something new: we watched clips of 4 astronomers, & discussed the wildly different speaking/presenting styles. Of course I chose these to be VERY different in style. Only 1 was a chaotic train wreck (spoiler, it was me from +10yrs ago)

@jradavenport

What I found very helpful for presentations was my choir experience. Breathing exercises to calm down, warm-up routines for my vocal chords. Helps me to know that my voice will work and I won't tighten up, cough etc. Then I can literally talk for hours. If needed.

knud,
@knud@mastodon.social avatar

@vicgrinberg @jradavenport

If someone has the choice then I would also clearly suggest the voice/speaking course iver the slide course. Slides are just tools, the voice is the central player.

That could so easily have gone very badly.

There were at least two more options I could have tried, but only one remaining row … 😬✌️

Gestern Bürgerversammlung zum geplanten Windpark in #Tübingen. Sehr zivile Diskussion.

knud,
@knud@mastodon.social avatar

@pikarl

1/2 I still struggle getting used to the fact that the smallest mirrors of the Extremely Large Telescope are similar in size to the primary mirrors of many current telescopes!

The M5 – the fifth mirror in the optical path – has reached a key milestone: its blank, the piece that will be later polished, has been finalised.

DON'T tell people how thick these mirrors are, please. Or rather: thin.

🚧 Construction works happen 🚧

So today my ICE is diverted between Frankfurt and Fulda

Yes the trip is longer, but it’s timetabled in, and it’s communicated well ✅

Green: the route I think we’ll take

Map of rail lines east of Frankfurt. A green stripe indicates the likely route to Fulda.

knud,
@knud@mastodon.social avatar

@jon

Except that DB Netz doesn't seem to know what they are building even a few months in advance. We've had 4 (!) cancellations on that route for a trip in 2 weeks time. "Go, find yourself an alternative" - very funny when you're trying to travel with your bikes.

knud,
@knud@mastodon.social avatar

@jon

I don't like comparisons to worse things somewhere else. If a thing (here: plannability of trips) is not guaranteed, then that means of transport stops existing.

I now know 2 people who had sold their cars and said they will get a car again because their daily local train commutes stopped being plannable. It's almost the same with bike transport by DB. And - but whom am I telling this - cross-border rail is only for experts at this point.

Incoming! A severe G4 Geomagnetic Storm is expected to arrive around 02:00 UTC Friday night / Saturday morning.

At least 5 Coronal Mass Ejections took place over the past 24 hours, directed towards Earth. These originated from a large and magnetically complex sunspot cluster (NOAA region 3664).

There is potential for disruption of communications, the electric power grid, navigation, radio and satellite operations.

And bright auroras as far south as Alabama!

It's a pickled (=preserved) Brathering, you can obviously also get that fresh. But only close to the coast.

I do like the pickled version once in a while.

Today I'll be introducing X-ray astronomy (in German!) to a bunch of medical doctors at the RöKo (Röntgenkongress https://www.roentgenkongress.de/roeko-wiesbaden/) Wiesbaden as an invited highlight talk. Kinda a fun audience and very different from a normal one 😳

I am trying to re-create an old talk from ~4 years ago I found in my archives and I simultaneously love past-me (she did such a great job developing a talk structure, much better than the one I had in mind when asked to give a talk on this topic a month ago!) and hate her (she somehow managed to deleted the keynote of the talk so that I am now stuck with a PDF and trying to find all figures & re-type the text ...).

knud,
@knud@mastodon.social avatar

@vicgrinberg

Can you convert PDF to Keynote with some tool? Or is that so ... limited that re-creating it from scratch is easier?

knud,
@knud@mastodon.social avatar

@vicgrinberg

Then happy "creating". I was amazed which level of detail is actually preserved in a PDF unless the exported resolution was substantially reduced. Full pictures even underneath masks, etc.

But if you have most of the original pix then it's definitely easier.

I finally put an animated observation from 2018 onto , where I observed the Moon one evening and then again the next morning. With a ~7000km baseline due to the Earth having rotated with me on it, the Moon appears under an angle differing by ~0.5°. That is "diurnal libration":

I bought that during March 2020... I also have a greenscreen. I could use a better camera and some extra light panels.

I contemplated if we shouldn't have a Euclid "monthly update" or so.

These unofficial Mastodon accounts of space agencies are bots that merely share news items the agencies publish elsewhere, yet the accounts have quite a lot of followers:

  • NASA: @nasa 71K followers
  • ESA: @esa 1.4K followers

There's an unfulfilled demand for public institutions to communicate on open and independent platforms.

knud,
@knud@mastodon.social avatar

@amoroso @nasa @esa

I have to talk to ESA again about this. We asked about a move or at least starting activities in the Fediverse, but they didn't have any final discussions on this yet.

How far did astronomers travel world-wide for conferences in 2019 in total? More than 300 times to the Moon & back! Or, to put it in astronomical units: more than 1.5 AU, so to the Sun and halfway back!
