@jrconlin@soc.jrconlin.com

Got two Turing tables and some microcode.

I work on back-end server-y type stuff at a place that keeps rockin' the free web. I like rust, python, and horrible puns (not necessarily in that order).

I tend to be nice for selfish reasons (I don't like hanging out with jerks).

Imagine working for a company that is so well managed, that is so well organized and competently led, that a genuinely felt need for a tool that let you be in three meetings at the same time somehow emerged organically from the working culture as a problem worth solving.

Imagine working somewhere that building a tool that let people be in three meetings at the same time sounded like a good idea.

They probably had a coordination and planning meeting about it.

It was only attended by AIs.

They thought it was wonderful.

TIL:
If you send out a meeting invite to a mail list, clicking on the '"Yes" or "No" I will attend' button tries to add the mail list (not you, the mail list recipient) to the meeting, which generally errors out.

If you plan on attending a meeting that's being held a month ago, and you are part of a mail list that got an invite. DO NOT ASSUME CLICKING "YES" MEANS THAT YOU GET A CALENDAR REMINDER! You gotta do that manually, it turns out.

Gmail + Gcalendar is very clever, that way.

@bhearsum

This is why I request that all my meeting invites be delivered by a page, ideally having ridden in a horse drawn carriage. Bonus points if the page is wearing a powdered wig and holds a silver platter with the invite.

Those usually get a "maybe" from me.

You know, it's always fun to talk to junior or non-tech folk and explain to them that big companies are really a loose confederacy of smaller ones that all use the same badge to get into the cafeteria.

@PeterLudemann @mhoye

I'd argue that members of two teams do, sometimes, have a meeting where they go over some points.

Those meetings then become the origin of big games of corporate telephone where the final product might have the same name, but is now a messaging / social / email platform instead of a build delivery system.

Yeah, it's also fun looking at huge orgs "Mission Statement". The bigger they are, the vaguer the statement.

I fully expect massive organizations to have one like:

Moving from screen to tmux, this post was very helpful for bootstrapping the experience-tailoring process: https://hamvocke.com/blog/a-guide-to-customizing-your-tmux-conf/

After a quarter century in screen, remapping c-b as the magic prefix key back to c-a, where all my muscle memory wants it, was helpful and pleasant. So are the mouse menus, and the "list the URLs on the screen" function is a nice touch.

jrconlin,
@jrconlin@soc.jrconlin.com avatar

@mhoye

Ah, neat!

I also have a script I run to start tmux. It lets me optionally use named sessions, which can be handy at times.

I feel like the four-day-workweek proposal lacks both ambition and seasonal nuance.

My proposal is this: "The 30 hour work week".

That is: Five shortened 6 hour days in the winter, when sunlight is scarce and we'd probably rather be indoors more often than not anyway, and four 7.5 hour days in the summer, when the sun gets us moving earlier and we'd rather have an extra full day outside.

jrconlin,

I like it in theory, but I can't help finding ways that it could be weaponized against folk.

First time I ever had to field strip a PS4.

Went surprisingly well.

(there's an electronics recycling pick up tomorrow and I've not used the damn thing in at least 7 years.)

Sounds kinda terrible as a cocktail.

Since those tears are pretty impotent.

We agree to disagree because there are times when I am lazy and just want to pour some of this crap on leftover chicken and make myself a quick sandwich rather than go through the effort of doing it correctly.

(I'll admit it doesn't have the same edge, but if I want that, I'll add Tapa Tio or whatever.)

Using the "Wisdom of the Crowd" only really works when everyone sees the same thing. This is even more true when dealing with abstract stuff like projects and work loads.

Just throwing it out there now, preemptively: any suspect flags you see hanging from my house, any insurrections that I may or may not have taken part in, any World War II or civil war memorabilia that you may find prominently displayed in my house...

Why do airlines ask if you're traveling with "children ages 2-17", when those same "children" end up paying the same rate as adults? 🤬 🤬

If I ever get something like that, they absolutely get the unedited response from the cheapest AI I can paste the message into.

Since #Microsoft #Recall will not record DRM'd content, maybe running a DRM'd movie in a small window on your PC will disable it from recording the entire screen/desktop?

Also, how does it work across multiple monitors? Take a shot of the entire desktop across all monitors? Or just the active monitor?

Anyone? Anyone??
