Computer geek. Go player. I work somewhere, but these are my opinions, etc. A boost does not (always) imply an endorsement. Been around the "social media" block. Myspace, Orkut, Yahoo! 360º, Facebook, Google+, Twitter, Instagram, and probably a few I've forgotten (or suppressed).

Born at 324 PPM?

@woody Mastodon (4.2.8). Usually it works, but this nonsense does pop up from time to time (not just you, obvs)

For the entire time I've been using #Emacs, I never used (or wanted) any kind of spell-checking. That is changing now that I'm using it a lot more to write notes/documentation with #OrgMode / #OrgRoam.

Ideally I want to only do spell-checking on comments, when editing code, and similar configurability for Org documents.

What is the recommended method for something like that in 2024 (on macOS, if that makes any difference)?

Free to good home. High speed gyroscope with motor to spin it up takes 650 lion rechargeable battery. not included. You also get this top and magnetic spin toy. I bought this for some diffeq lesson and can’t remember why. It’s handmade heavy brass a very nice gyroscope.

You will need to pay for shipping. I think in the US that’s under $10-20? idk Anyway msg me if you want it.

If in NYC you can pick it up.

(I found the battery, so it just needs a charger.)

As usual I’m pretty clueless as to what flowers these are (and appreciate pointers/feedback), but I certainly enjoyed taking these pictures

Yellow and blue flowers in between fresh green grass
Purple flowers in front of fresh green grass
Fuchsia and white flower

The fediverse is bigger than Truth Social and most of it isn't even a company... just a bunch of nerds running their own social network on pocket change (as it should be) and the content here is chefs kiss so much nicer.

Maybe we should "go public" too LMAO.

    So I'm trying to install a piece of software on Linux, and I run a "./launch_installer.sh", and immediately it prints a message suggesting it is unpacking a JRE so it can run the installer inside the JRE, and I wonder if I am going to a dark place here

    NOTE TO ZOOMERS: That's Java Runtime Environment not the other thing. "Java" is a programming language people used in the 1800s, when programming meant making punchcards for Jacquard looms

    For a few years now we've been watching the original Perry Mason series (1957-1966), about an episode per week. Half of the fun is going "Hey, is that so-and-so" at seeing an actor a few years before they became famous for something /we/ know.

    Today's surprise (S5E14) is a fellow by the name of De Forest Kelley, about 5 years before his best known role 😁

    Scratched an itch this week where I replaced a fairly old MAMP app with ~70 lines of docker-related configuration files that create 3 containers (and 1 of those could easily be removed, it's just for convenience).

    https://github.com/jochie/AMP

    In particular I'm happy that the DB files are no longer in an app-directory (/Applications/MAMP/…) that may or may not be backed up, whereas everything in my home-directory definitely is, and I can easily run mysqldump.

    It's been 20 days since I started my journey to use GrapheneOS. And Im thriving! I've removed Google Play services from my phone and set up my PC to automatically redirect away from all Google products. I've also left mainstream social media years ago and have now shifted my social media presence to Fediverse.

    In case you're keen to do the same, here's a list of the alternatives I'm using now (this is list is not exhaustive):

    Google Docs/Sheets: Cryptpad.fr (https://cryptpad.fr/)
    Social Media: Mastodon (come and join us at https://infosec.exchange)
    Email: ProtonMail (with personal domain)
    Authenticator: Aegis (https://getaegis.app/)
    Photo Management: Immich (https://github.com/immich-app/immich)
    Google Translate: Libre Translate (https://libretranslate.com/)
    Youtube: PeerTube (https://joinpeertube.org/)
    Search Engine: SeaRx (on the way to be selfhosted and DuckDuckGo)
    Web Browser: Waterfox (https://www.waterfox.net/)
    Phone: grapheneOS (from a refurbished Pixel 6)
    Google Maps: OpenStreet Map (https://www.openstreetmap.org)
    Calendar, Online storage: ProtonDrive, Proton Calendar
    App stores: Droidify (F-droid) and Aurora store for the occasional non F-Droid apps (like the ProtonMail client)
    Messaging: Matrix (https://matrix.org) Session (https://getsession.org/) and Signal
    Notes: Joplin (https://joplinapp.org/)

    @imajeanpeace I'd be interested in a (shared) spreadsheet alternative to O365/M365/GoogleApps but my first impression of cryptpad.fr is not great, it's just hanging at this state (I use Firefox). I assume your experience has been better than /that/? 🤨

    ETA: FWIW - Yesterday, when I reloaded the still-open tab, it worked just fine. Nothing changed, it's still :firefox: (macOS) with the same extensions, including ad-blockers, etc (re @gruff). So I plan to try it out for real in the near future🤞

    @RogerBW I /desperarely/ need to refresh myself on Dijkstra’s algorithm, it seems. I mean, handy that you have it there for the taking just like something like qsort() or whatever in various environments, but it seems I keep reinventing a suboptimal version of Dijkstra’s from scratch and that should probably stop 😬

    I spent some time cleaning up my #AdventOfCode code repository (rewriting history), deleting (many, not all yet) ’input' and 'sample' files that I had collected in there along with the crafted solutions.

    This was triggered by something I noticed in the about page. It’s a very recent addition because it wasn't there 3d earlier:

    https://web.archive.org/web/diff/20231203054710/20231206142838/https://adventofcode.com/about

    Anyway, I think it's a reasonable request, and I imagine others may want to know about it?

    Em0nM4stodon, to programming

    Is being a "minimalist programmer" a thing? 👀

    As in a programmer who specializes in coding with as few external dependencies as possible. Or is this just generally frown upon?

    jochie,
    @jochie@strangeweb.page avatar

    @Em0nM4stodon I don't know if there is a name for it, but I imagine that for anyone who has been bitten by dependency hell in some form or another, the pendulum has swung in that direction: "I can add library XYZ, and who knows when that is going to bite me, because it's no longer maintained, has a security vulnerability in some unrelated part, etc, or I can write just what I need in 10-50 lines of code.”

    jochie,
    @jochie@strangeweb.page avatar

    @Em0nM4stodon Fffffff, I'd happily suppressed that memory. I'm not responsibly for any Java code directly but we had a few agents on our EC2 instances that turned into moving targets as they stacked almost-fix upon almost-fix that we were pushing as quickly as we reasonably could. 😒

    My own experience with dependency hell is more in the realm of Perl, Python, how many versions of jquery we pull in, and groaning at Go source code repos that pull in the kitchen sink and them some more, it seems.

    I saw another person take issue with the term "software engineering" and I think that's fine, but I think we should all call ourselves "computer scientists" instead, because imo that's even more offensive

    jochie,
    @jochie@strangeweb.page avatar

    @aeva I call myself a coder or programmer, when I can, and only a software engineer when I talk to HR/managers. 😏

    To make matters worse, the acronym S.E. has been made completely useless since it is also being used for Support "Engineer”, Sales "Engineer”, and possibly others. 😕

    jochie,
    @jochie@strangeweb.page avatar

    @urda I'm curious, can you point me to something that explains the distinction between “computer engineering” and “computer science”, in that context?

    How... had I never realized that "perldoc -f <builtin-function>” is a thing? Game changer!

    I realized this as I'm poking around to find out if there is /any/ way (documented or not) to substitute the current program/topic in the =pod section, so I can copy a script template around and require fewer changes to get up and running.

    If anyone has an answer to that (which may be of the form "Nope, no dice”), I would appreciate it.
