Is the world overall, for the most people, a better or worse place than when you were born? I was born in 1968; I believe it’s generally better for most people, despite being terrible for many. Do you expect at the time you leave this world for that to change much for better or for worse? I used to think for better; after the events of the last two years, for worse. I don’t expect to die soon, though (most people don’t).

javbw,
@javbw@mastodon.social avatar

@glennf I expect the world to get materially better for more people (mostly people pulled out of extreme poverty,etc), but I also expect the world to get more and more “granularly transactional” - everything we do is seemingly becoming micro-transactional in nature in every aspect of our lives - much more than it seemed in the pre-internet age.

Lower Decks transforms slowly, inexorably, from absolute slapstick and ridiculous over the top stuff into slightly absurd but often deadly serious situations. The episode about Ferengis just out is probably the best Deep Space 9 extended universe installment since the series ended? Even with the relationship stuff in the middle! It’s kind of amazing what they've done over the arc.

javbw,
@javbw@mastodon.social avatar

@glennf I am really really enjoying Lower Decks, and watching the characters become more “themselves” as the show becomes a bit more serious is a real treat. I really love how everyone has different career goals, hobbies, and social needs, etc, than the officer core does.

iPod touch is a rare case of Apple completely discontinuing a form factor. It got a good 15 years for sure.

Honestly, I kinda miss iPod touch and wish it was given the opportunity to branch out into different shapes and sizes that don't quite make sense for iPhone. It was so much easier to keep around as a developer testing device

javbw,
@javbw@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith It would be fun to have an iOS device that can handle direct sunlight(besides watch): a “cheap”iPod touch as a cycling computer/map screen or the “DeskPlay” version of CarPlay device that pairs up with your now Amazingly Expensive iPhone in your pocket - the watch is too small for many tasks.

Right now, I use an iPhone5 as an iPod (Apple Music + Library Sync), but that wouldn’t be useful to devs…

    I propose a new quirky airline to unseat Southwest.

    Introducing Midwest Airlines!

    The snacks and drinks are all generic, the interior will feature corn motifs, deplaning will be extra slow because of all the saying goodbyes, and the winglets will proudly feature the tagline: "Ope!"

    javbw,
    @javbw@mastodon.social avatar

    @TechConnectify Even as a Californian I get the generic “Midwest” references until the “ope” tagline - it is like secret midwest slang term that never leaked into the Southwest - is it something hiding in an MST3K episode or something?

    (I love Tech Connections🥰)

    We use iMessage almost always, but when you have a short message you want to make sure they hear immediately, with no action on their part (she is driving), it is a great way to communicate.

    I’m surprised the setup process for every new iPhone still asks whether you want to use FaceID with a mask when 99+% of people aren’t wearing face masks any more. There are lots of features that a small percentage of people use, but they don’t get asked in the device setup process.

    javbw,
    @javbw@mastodon.social avatar

    @gruber Here in Japan, it is ebbing quickly, but still over 50%. At my school, 80% of students and almost all teachers are still masking indoors - so maybe it is higher globally (in the iPhone market)?

    javbw,
    @javbw@mastodon.social avatar

    @glennf @debcha I love these kind of stories too- there was a similar pedestrian overpass built over Interstate 8 in La Mesa for Grossmont HS kids to cross the freeway (I assume while I8 was under construction long ago), and I used it when I was very young - but when they widened the freeway and replaced the narrow sidewalk-less road bridges with better, wider ones, the old footbridge was never replaced.

    mbonsma, to random
    @mbonsma@mastodon.social avatar

    Leading pedestrian intervals are great, but they would be a whole lot better if we banned right turns on red. The whole point is to create a protected walking phase for the first part of a crossing, and if cars are zooming through on a red light it kind of defeats the purpose.
    #WalkableCities #LPI

    javbw,
    @javbw@mastodon.social avatar

    @mbonsma @HollyGoDarkly “Right” turns on a red light are illegal in Japan (They drive on the other side, so it is left turns, but you get it the idea), though people blow stop signs ALL THE TIME here in car-loving Gunma (higher per-capita Car ownership than San Diego).

    Basically, replacing a main drive every few years between the 500MB drive of my Performa in 1991 up to about 2017 with the 8TB HD upgrade for my iMac, every upgrade drive completely took all my hoarded data with room to spare (500mb, 1 GB, 3, 6, 10, 20, 30, 100, 250, 500, 1TB, 3, 4, 6, 8… Now 3 macs with dedicated jobs, so it doesn’t hold any more.

    @gbhnews Ivory - much like looking forward to a new movie or book from your favorite creator, Ivory is from a long-time iOS dev team (2007), @tapbots.
