I know I've mentioned this before, but one of my favorite features on the Mac that has no equivalent on an iPhone or iPad is adding new words to the system-wide spelling dictionary. The feature dates back to Mac OS X 10.0 and I'm pretty sure was in NeXTStep a decade before that.

And, even better, the custom words you add to the dictionary are stored in a simple text file, one word per line, at:

~/Library/Group Containers/group.com.apple.AppleSpell/Library/Spelling/LocalDictionary

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

That text file used to be at an even simpler location:

~/Library/Spelling/LocalDictionary

but Apple moved it at some point in the last few years into a sandboxed folder. Kinda sucks that such much stuff is buried deeper in ~/Library/, but one can see why this file deserves to be protected.

If you ever make a mistake or simply wish to remove a word from your custom spelling dictionary, you don't need to edit the text file. Just secondary-click on the word again and choose "Unlearn Spelling”:

Interesting to hear mainstream media pundits constantly complain of the toxicity of platforms like X, but they stay on them and do not attempt to build an audience on the fediverse because it's just too much effort for them

“Nintendo’s first-party titles have almost consistently been successful without predatory monetization or deplorable pricing structures because the quality speaks for itself. Even at their worst, Nintendo has consistently produced quality games that continue to make them money decades later.”

@invalidname Culture matters. It needs to be nurtured and deeply valued within the organization, but companies like Nintendo and Apple show that it can be preserved.

I suppose Microsoft's internal culture has been preserved as well, but theirs has never been one that values quality first and foremost.

My son got some fancy keycaps for one of his keyboards, and while I like the feel overall, I realized only after trying to use it myself that this compact layout lacks a backtick/tilde key, making it impossible to do a code span in Markdown.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@wklj That's just him using whatever keys fit the space. It works as a Command key in Mac mode.

gruber,

@GreatBigTable He was very unimpressed a few years ago when, while I was helping him with a Python programming assignment for school that required a Markdown-formatted readme, I told him I invented that. Very, very unimpressed. It was like I told him I'd invented rubber erasers on pencils or something.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@kraigschmidt @wklj @jsnell @viticci @Moltz Folding how? Like sideways? I tried a bunch of those about 10 years ago thinking it would make for a great super minimal travel computer with just my iPhone, but never found a single such keyboard I liked. One problem for me is that my fingers could never get used to any sort of gap down the middle of the keyboard.

@tobinator Ha! Nope. I don't know how that came out of my mouth that way but it's not a gag.

Well, I finally had enough with MLB‘s blackout restrictions. Signed up for a VPN so I can watch all the blacked out games including them playing the Orioles right now which I can never watch. Now all I have to do is figure out how to get it working on the Apple TV.

I like the look of the Daylight tablet a lot. It’s very expensive, but it is intriguing. I do not like the marketing that describes it as a “healthier” computer, non-addictive, “for your wellbeing”. https://daylightcomputer.com

How to Make Google’s ‘Web’ View Your Search Default

gruber,

@leoncowle So you run this script when the front window is a default Google search, re-run the same search through the new Google Web?

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@leoncowle Should we call this disenshittified Google Search “Google Web”, or “udm14” or “&udm=14”? The last one is a nightmare verbally.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@leoncowle Spitball: map the script to ⌘R

Tweak the script:

— if the current URL is a Google search, append &udm=14 and reload
— else just do a regular browser reload

@gruber I can't read your mind, of course, but I'm noticing something I also noticed a couple weeks ago -- I think this is more left padding than you would want on lists inside of blockquotes. It's the user agent default, which is 40px in Safari. When not inside a blockquote, lists on your site have a left padding of 0.5em:

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@jsit Not quite sure how it got like that, but thanks to you, I spent some time tweaking those margins and paddings.

Let me know what you think, and thanks again for pointing this out.
