From The New Republic 2021— "Democrats should try campaigning on the truth: The Republican Party is controlled by intelligent, college-educated, and affluent elites who concoct dangerous nonsense to paper over a bigoted, plutocratic agenda and to justify attacks on the democratic process. "

“As a sign of just how badly the university’s lawyers have fared against the encampment, the Montreal police also spoke out against the injunction request in court, arguing police discretion in the matter is essential and that the cops aren’t McGill’s private security force.

McGill’s decision to seek the injunction also put an end to a series of meetings between administrators and protesters, further cementing the divide between both parties.”

There is no credible evidence that outside groups are funding student pro-Palestine (anti-genocide) protests in Canada. There is very little money at play here. For example, tents cost $48 each. Donations come from the community.

I have several weather apps and they all give sunrise & sunset but do not provide times for first light and last light, which were standard in military meteorological briefings.

Nobody wants to know when it will get light or dark?

Had lunch with a peer in a restaurant today. I brought my CO2 monitor, and as I am wont to do, I felt the need to explain and be a bit apologetic, since most people find it weird. Turns out his spouse has had Long COVID for a year, so he was both supportive and fascinated. In the half-empty restaurant, CO2 climbed from 600 to almost 900 by the time I left. I thought this might be a safer place, but perhaps not. (This is why I bought the CO2 monitor in the first place--to find safer options.)

@augieray did you bring any portable HEPA Filters?

harold,
@harold@mastodon.social avatar

@augieray we are still avoiding those places as well. On the few occasions where we have dined in, we place two portable filters on the table. One more slice of Swiss cheese ;)

@augieray our last dinner out, on Sunday for our 34th anniversary. The restaurant was packed inside and we were a bit chilly but had a lovely late lunch

The promise of the creator/passion economy is simple: follow your dream, work hard, and you'll achieve financial freedom while never working a day in your life.

But the reality is far more complex.

The emergence of the "side hustle" culture is part of a troubling trend - corporations are raking in record profits while wages stagnate.

And it's no coincidence.

This is anecdotal, but I now personally know two employees of -related companies whose valuations have imploded within the past month, and they are now looking to bail. One company lost 73% of their (publicly traded) value in a month. The other one is a startup whose founder (according to my friend) has “finally snapped”, and the company is now in freefall.

It feels like the bubble is bursting right now.

18 March: “I believe that AI has 3 quarters to prove itself before the apocalypse comes, and when it does, it will be that much worse, savaging the revenues of the biggest companies in tech. Once usage drops, so will the remarkable amounts of revenue that have flowed into big tech, and so will acres of data centers sit unused, the cloud equivalent of the massive overhiring we saw in post-lockdown Silicon Valley.”

“The enemy is the propaganda campaign that has everyone claiming, loudly and confidently, that is over, while catching it for the fifth time in four years. The enemy is the utter destruction of public health for the sake of a normal that isn’t coming back.”

I never thought I would live in a time when protesting against genocide would be seen as radical behaviour. There are Nazis in my family. I know what happened. My maternal grandfather, serving in the Wehrmacht, never got a ration card for his family because he would not join the Nazi party. Stand up against genocide, no matter the price.

Staying in a hotel, and holy crap, the ventilation is bad. CO2 rose to almost 3500 ppm! Tonight, we'll open the window.

harold,

@augieray I only stay in places where you can open windows so I’m staying in motels more often when I infrequently travel

Wednesday: TB announces new RTO policy increasing on site presence.
Thursday: Info comes out that the secretary of TB works remotely and regularly flies into Ottawa costing us tens of thousands of dollars.
Friday: Secretary of TB resigns for "health reasons"
That was quick.

I bought this black shopping pannier and no longer need it. It has never been used. I'd like to find it a good home. Perhaps for someone who could never afford one. Local Maritimes would be great. I would only charge shipping and pick-up would be free.

I have many Arkel products [made in Canada] and they are excellent.
