Does anyone else feel spiritually British? Tea, rainy weather, beans and toast, etc. Something about it all just feels like I would belong there.

Sometimes I think about how much media will be forever lost in decades to come because everything is now on streaming platforms that delete things on a whim instead of physical media.

evanpeterjones,
@evanpeterjones@mstdn.social avatar

@Gargron a new service comes around and their entire collection goes out of business with them.

I've been trying to find copies of my comfort shows before they're gone.

the caffeine pills i took have kicked in. it feels like i've had coffee, except my stomach isn't upset.

evanpeterjones,
@evanpeterjones@mstdn.social avatar

@thor I'm struggling with switching to tea, atm! It's just not the same

evanpeterjones,
@evanpeterjones@mstdn.social avatar

@thor it takes a lot though. I told a friend of mine studying neuroscience that tea and coffee feel like the difference between indica and sativa and they told me chemically they are different (something about 7 types of caffeine molecules, coffee has all 7, tea only has 5).

Apparently they learned about it in school but I've never been able to find a source to back that up but I still fully believe it.

@RadicalAnthro @stux they're being let in from the porch in this video, it doesn't look like they're in captivity. I agree though that keeping animals like this would probably not be a good thing to do.

Act V and loving it but I have such a bad habit of looking for my next book while I'm reading and all I want to do is finish this to start the next one (These Violent Delights by Micah Nemerever)

If you want to be happy, do not read the epilogue (read it, but then DM me and I'll give you a hug)

M was not playing around with that foreshadowing that the end of King Lear was a surprise tragedy "right at the last second".

I am telling myself a story of what actually happened so I can sleep and be happy again, but ML Rio needs jail time for what she's done to me. JAIL! 10 years mayhaps.

Google is deprecating their podcast service but they should really open-source their podcast app.

I genuinely appreciate the minimal UI and would keep using it manually adding rss feeds, or loading an opml.

the more I think about the idea of insurance the more angry I am that the entire insurance industry isn't owned by the state. Money and numbers is what bureaucracy thrives at

evanpeterjones,
@evanpeterjones@mstdn.social avatar

Insurance seems to me like a rare area where competition actually knee-caps everyone in the market and it actually gets worse the more who compete just as a consequence of statistical limitations.

Maybe, I'm unimaginative but the only way to improve the current insurance industry is to just allow it to be more and more invasive?

Plus running insurance schemes privately just ensures surplus value is thrown to investors instead of public slush funds.

evanpeterjones,
@evanpeterjones@mstdn.social avatar

by limitations, I mean insurance works better when you have a larger risk pool.

So if there's one insurer for 100 people and they know 50 will need a $2 payout then in total you need $1 in premiums from everyone and those 100 people will pay $100 in total.

But if there are TWO insurers now the 100 people would pay $200 in total bc neither group knows how many of the 50 they'll have to payout to, so they both have to treat all 50 as if they'll need a payout, so everyone ends up paying $2.

yet another #Portland neighborhood association meeting where the developer is going to build five units of housing with no #Parking, and that's the only thing neighbors are concerned about despite all of them claiming to be environmentalists. 🙄 #CarsRuinCities #GeometryHatesCars #FreeParkingOnADeadPlanet

evanpeterjones,

@enobacon ugh, I need to move to Portland! I just read Paved Paradise and learned my city is 31% parking, that sounds like a dream.

evanpeterjones, to fuckcars
@evanpeterjones@mstdn.social avatar

Maybe I'm too steeped in and but my theory of why are so popular now is because our generation grew up appearing places we had to be shuttled to by car, and so they never fit into a mental map and felt disconnected from reality.

That's why so many LSs are shopping malls, playlands, public parks, gas stations, rest stops, etc.

That would also explain why LSs have always had this inexplicably nostalgic tone to them.

evanpeterjones,
@evanpeterjones@mstdn.social avatar

I'd be very curious if people who didn't grow up with a dissected map of their environment get anything out of the liminal spaces stuff.

@loshmi none that I've seen, but I haven't looked in a year or so. But here's a pretty good article in The Atlantic

This GOP election cycle is starting to feel very 2016. The establishment keeps trying out every single person on that stage other than trump

Desantis, now Ramaswamy, they'll probably try Pence next, is my guess, but it's gonna be Trump regardless of what they do.
