    i think people who sneer at cryptocurrencies are making a mistake.

    greedy idiots and the FTX scandal? yes, okay, sneer at that. but those guys operate on Wall Street too.

    there are people who are working on crypto who are idealists with fairly noble goals, and they see alternative currencies as maybe one way of fixing the ills of this world.

    they're not too interested in all this speculation and hype. and they're mostly offering it all under FOSS licenses, for anyone to use.

    @thor I feel very mixed about this, but have had similar thoughts. I've always had a quiet fascination with how simple the Proof of Work concept is. The fact a PoW algorithm can be written in tens of lines of code and still be mathematically secure no matter how many users are on the network is nothing to sneer at. That's beautiful!!

    But that's PoW, compare that to the Ethereum rewrite of PoS which was ~100k lines of code. It's a digital bureaucracy and that should make anyone nervous.

    @thor true! I kind of think of it that way. PoW feels a lot like an academic exercise of how to tie information to reality inside of a system that depends on that data being mutable. Which is very cool to think about.

    a guy i spent a great deal of time with in my teens came out as gay later.

    in retrospect, it should have been obvious, but it just didn't register with me...

    know how social media like Reddit and Tumblr are made fun of for their groupthink? Mastodon and the Fediverse has its own groupthink.

    the video mentions Mastodon in passing but says the name sounds like a joke. and yeah, Threads is a much better name. kind of wish Mastodon wasn't named Mastodon. never liked the name. FOSS software in general tends to have ugly names.

    @thor FOSS has some of the worst names. I really liked Clojure in college but so many libraries were just clj-[some name] and it's so uncreative.

    The name mastodon is too long and the fact people were so determined to call posts "Toots" though the German creator didn't know what it meant. Lots of things bother me.
