I signed an open letter demanding answers from Substack leadership on why they’re platforming and monetizing Nazis, white nationalists, and other far-right figures.

This isn’t free speech. It’s hate speech.

@ryansingel @parismarx agreed!

There’s never been a better time to move to Ghost, especially now that they even support open web recommendations, bringing back the good ol’ webrings vibes:

I’m already a Patron of Tech Won’t Save us and would gladly support Disconnect as well if it was on a network that aligned with my values. (Not that Patreon is a perfect fit either, but we gotta tackle one platform at a time..)

eloquence, to threads
@eloquence@social.coop avatar

Earlier this year, #SocialCoop landed on a "limiting" policy for #Threads after a democratic vote: you can follow accounts, but their posts won't make it into other people's feeds who don't follow them.

That works for me so I can follow e.g. NGOs that only maintain a presence on Threads (and sooner or later bug them to get their own instance ;-). I understand why other servers may prefer to suspend, or even why some may prefer to do nothing.

Glad fedi gives us a full range of choices.

erlend,
@erlend@writing.exchange avatar

@eloquence this seems like a very sane default, and I’m convinced most fedizens do not know that this is even an option.

The #threads debate is stuck in a false “block or not” dichotomy.

Kudos to #Beeper for their competitive compatibility hijinks as of late.

No doubt they’re intentionally building a case for regulators. They’ve forced Apple’s hand, effectively showing that cross-platform comms is a matter of willingness, not technical limitation.

Seeing as Apple’s company policy is provably anti-competitive, we the users rely on state-mandated policies to overrule them in favor of adversarial interop.

Intro piece:

What comes out of Big Corp’s ASS

When you hook up your mind to a cloud-controlled Artificial Synthesizer (ASS), you plainly receive their fully digested discharge.

You don’t get to see what happened further up in the synthetic digestive tract of the ASS, where copious amounts of data grub were initially ingested and processed by a divine black-box entity.

1/2

erlend,
@erlend@writing.exchange avatar

You don’t have any insight into where and who those morsels of data came from, and you certainly don’t get any say in which of them the entity should or should not consume for processing and output, delivered to you through the ASS-as-a-Service.

All you’re supposed to do is open your mind’s mouth wide and say “please” and “thank you” for the grossly diluted information bits you’re about to receive.

@khleedril that question can take us to a lot of places, but simply put I think what we need to concern ourselves with keeping track of the links between thoughts more so than the provenance of any specific thought.

Thoughts are brought into being through an elaborate chain of This Then That. The provenance of thought-connections is what I’m interested in, not so much who said what when.

erlend, to politics
@erlend@writing.exchange avatar

Do not misconceive of a ‘social construct’ as something that isn’t real.

Make the mistake of disregarding our social reality as a way to circumvent it, and you will find yourself banging your head against the very real walls of sociality until you go mad.

Once you accept the reality of our social constructs you will see they can only be deconstructed and made anew by the collective imagination of our socialized power.

Back in high school, I made some kind of mistake that a teacher scolded me for.

(It’s also quite possible that it wasn’t me who got scolded in this particular instance, but rather I was just empathizing with a fellow student.)

The teacher said “Do you know why I was so hard on you just now? Because this way, the shock of this harsh lesson will make you remember it forever.”

Well, it’s been almost two decades and all that remains with me is the feeling of being yelled at for getting it wrong.

@stormcauldron yeah, they are right to worry about AI overlords because that’s the only kind of AGI they can imagine.

The only systems they know how to make are based on authoritarian control.

They simply cannot conceive of a harmoniously symbiotic relationship between human beings and AI tools that extend our abilities and capacity for cooperation, the same way localized utilities like fire pits, hammers and books have.

@photomatt & co have talked about making Tumblr fully open source for a long time. In light of Tumblr’s downsizing, this is the time to do so!

Since it’s failing to make a profit they may as well release it for the wider internet community to go nuts with it.

Better yet, spin Tumblr out as a standalone co-op venture to succeed or fail on its own merits.

There are quite a few people on #threads who post something along the lines of:

Usually, everyone complains about “the algorithm”, but in this case, people are seeking it out.

@ernest I love that I’m reading these updates from kbin on my Mastodon (Ivory) client! Good to have you back in action 😊

But how come the full text is cut off?

erlend, (edited ) to fediverse
@erlend@writing.exchange avatar

There’s a major convergence of OAuth/OIDC support across #fediverse applications, #Matrix is going all-in on it as its root default, and other social web protocols are tagging along as well.

Like the separation of church and state, it seems prudent to keep the management of our digital identities separate from our social network servers.

Domain-based OIDC accounts with web sign-in, especially when self-hosted, serve the function of a minimum-viable #nomadicidentity

https://socialhub.activitypub.rocks/t/autonomous-identity-for-the-pluriverse-based-on-oauth-oidc/3675?u=erlend_sh

erlend,
@erlend@writing.exchange avatar

@jenniferplusplus sure. On the plus side, this isn’t so much an addition to the fediverse as it is a minor reconfiguration of the status quo.

A proof of concept can be put together by a single #rust developer.

erlend,
@erlend@writing.exchange avatar

@silverpill I don’t think you read my proposal if that’s what you’re taking away from this.

Web sign-in (like IndieAuth) by OIDC is the antidote to the auth-monopoly of the megacorps.

erlend,
@erlend@writing.exchange avatar

@hueso it’s what a lot of other things do, but none of those are already widely implemented across most fediverse apps, which OIDC is. It’s an already adopted standard, not a new thing that would take years of advocacy and coordination.

erlend,
@erlend@writing.exchange avatar

@jaxter184 We need something like IndieAuth, I.e. ‘web sign-in’. But IndieAuth is an extension of OAuth that predates OIDC and is not compatible with it. Mastodon already supports its own form of ‘web sign-in’, and this too is a custom thing rather than IndieAuth exactly.
