Yes, I don't use OX much — because my contacts don't have it, and because OX does not yet support HTTP Upload. Still, I try to avoid OMEMO and only use it, if my peers insist.

Hey #xmpp folks, is Prosody still the easiest way to self-host a server?

Please, please, please say it isn't

EDIT: use case is I have an Ubuntu box from Hetzner hosting some websites and (soon) a nextcloud, this is what I had set up on my last dedicated server (except owncloud back then) and the new box has Plesk on it and after just a couple of weeks of pressing buttons in Plesk and having it Do It All For Me I've been completely spoiled

EDIT 2: the root of the issue is that Plesk hides your .cert and .key files. Scrambles their names, removes their extensions and dumps them all under /opt/psa/certificates/ not even in different folders for different domains, you'd expect mydomain.com.cert but instead you get scfLios3a, all mixed up in a bucket with the eggs on top, good luck telling Prosody where to look for those buggers

I found TLS certs, thanks to #LetsEncrypt, relatively easy. YMMV.

    You are right, that setting up a modern #XMPP server has some "funny" aspects: You need the right DNS entries, you want to have an HTTP server, and there is #TURN for #Jingle.

    But I didn't understand the post by @frankie in the way, they were promoting selfhosting.

    For most "non-geek" people I suggest (for #Jabber as for email or fediverse/Mastodon) to select a trustworthy server. E.g. a local internet club, a cooperative or a small company. There are many free and paid options.

    I totally agree, that is not always a smooth experience. It highly depends on selection of server, which client is in use, how is the network etc. I even wonder, if positions of stars and planets might play a role 🙂

    But what would be the alternative? Either we invest our time, energy, and money into free and federated technology, such as , or we give up on our .

    Laut AGB will Zoom Kundeninhalte und Nutzungsdaten für KI-Lernzwecke verwenden. 😕 Das kann man versuchen, aber ich könnte Zoom als Anwalt nicht mehr nutzen und muss eigentlich jedem davon abraten Zoom im Rahmen von Kunden, Mandanten- oder Patientenkommunikation einzusetzen. Außer mit einer ausdrücklichen Einwilligung, die diese Nutzung nachweisbar und verständlich erklärt (was in der Praxis selten vorkommt).

    I personally do not blame anyone for working with the police on the level, we have seen, neither Matrix nor Daniel.

    However, there is a difference:

    Daniel is only one "random" (sorry, Daniel!) person in the #Jabber #XMPP community. It's not the XSF @xmpp, that works with whoever.

    In the case of Matrix, it is the company itself, which hold control of protocol and reference implementation. Again: I don't blame them.

    And that is a difference, because in one case, the funding company works with the police (on the level, that I'm aware of: why not?), in the other case, it's more like police were using e.g. fluffychat without involvment of Matrix itself.

    Es ist entweder eine Auslassung durch @heiseonline oder eine Dreistigkeit durch den Firmengründer. Er kennt die Geschichte von #Jabber bekanntlich sehr gut (besser als ich auf jeden Fall 🙂), da Matrix ganz bewußt als Alternative zu #XMPP entwickelt wurde. Es sind ja auch wirklich andere Konzepte und gute Ideen drin, auf die sie stolz sein können. Aber so zu tun, als hätten sie nicht von XMPP gelernt (im guten wie im schlechten), ist peinlich.

    I see, a puppeteer gateway, just like by @nicoco nowadays, which again supports Facebook chat, too. Which probably was much simpler to realise with c2s than it is today.

    Ich bin gerade derbe am überlegen ob ich meinen #ejabberd #xmpp #server abschalte und auf #matrix setze.

    Ich finde die Situation unter #iOS einfach unbefriedigend #Monal und wie sie alle heißen sind einfach kein Vergleich zu #Conversations

    Grundlegend läuft ejabberd zuverlässig aber irgendwie fühlt es sich nicht mehr rund an.

    Ich stiege eher von iOS auf #Mobian oder eine einigermaßen freie Android-Variante um als von #Jabber auf ein anderes Chatsystem 🙂

    Gegen Matrix ist im Prinzip nichts zu sagen. Es ist frei und federiert wie #XMPP, hat aber eine Finanzierung in ganz anderer Größenordnung. Ich habe an @Monal mal etwas Geld gespendet, aber da fehlten wohl ein paar Nullen 😞

    Weird time: what is a webchat (either or ) client that works with or encryption?

    I'm looking for something that I can access from my work computer (where pretty much all I use is the browser), and ideally would have a way to use my own key for the encryption (instead of autogenerating one every time I log in).

    Suggestions?

    IIRC, it generates OMEMO keys and stores them in the local storage of the browser. I.e. it does not generate new keys on subsequent logins. You might need to allow local storage in your browser, though.

    I feel like remote editing will always just, no matter what

    SSH terminal editor: gets weird on a shared server, can be annoying with some latency
    editors that boot up a daemon: the daemon, often somehow really slow and clunky
    SSHFS: you don't have the entire environment
    anything like remote desktop: why ​:haggard:​

    I'm using #TRAMP for "everything". IMHO, it works, but it also has its issues. Esp. it can be horribly slow sometimes, and its interactions with other packages are strange for me, i.e. #magit.

    Nur mit App bedeutet nicht nur, daß es nicht ohne #Handy geht, sondern auch dann nicht, wenn man zwar ein Handy hat, es aber ein "dumb phone" ist oder ein #Smartphone mit #Linux, z.B. #Mobian by @mobian oder #postmarketOS by @postmarketOS.

    "Friss Android/iOS oder stirb!" ist das Motto von #DeutscheBahn. Freie, alternative Betriebssysteme werden nicht mitgedacht.

    Warum nicht z.B. eine Kundenkarte? Zu #LowTech?

    Question to anyone who uses #profanity as #XMPP client: how do you receive a file sent via HTTP File Upload? I know you can use /sendfile to send it, encrypted with OMEMO, even, but I'm yet to know how to receive it, and it's driving me nuts... what's the command?

    Yes, /url open TAB works for me with aesgcm URI. It opens e.g. a decrypted image using a local file URI with Firefox on my system.
