    Das wären sehr ungewöhnliche Erfahrungen:

    Keine Möglichkeit einen Fahrschein am Automaten, am Schalter oder im Reisebüro zu erwerben? Kann ich kaum glauben.

    DHL bringt Pakete in eine Packstation, ohne daß der/die Empfänger/in dies veranlaßt hätte? Klingt nicht glaubwürdig.

    I'm still thinking about #Matrix and #XMPP. I like both, but it makes me sad how XMPP is so undersupported. It seems like it would be less complex and more efficient. But maybe I'm wrong.

    Yes, this stuff is really complicated. I agree, that both Matrix and #XMPP are complex (in different ways), and the people who invented those protocols are not stupid — they implemented all the complexity for reasons.

    And how cumbersome email is nowadays! When I started using email, there was no TLS, no PGP, no MIME, no DKIM, no SPF, no DMARC, no other encoding than 7-bits ASCII. To send a picture, we had to uuencode it and paste the result in the email. Wow!

    The federation model of is based on random chance. Yes, being on a larger instance increases your chances that you can see all replies in a thread but it doesn’t guarantee it.

    habe ich nun gelöscht. Das immer schon damit einhergehende ungute Gefühl wollte ich nicht länger ertragen. wird wohl auch noch vom Gerät fliegen. Fällt mir natürlich leicht, weil beide ungenutzt sind. Wer will sich schon mit mir unterhalten? 😉 werde ich vorerst behalten. Weil mir bekanntlich Datenschutz wichtig ist, habe ich wieder ein Konto eingerichtet. Mal sehen, ob es je zur Anwendung kommt 😊

    funktioniert bei mir u.a. gut, weil ich es im Freundeskreis aktiv beworben habe. Mein Argument war: Du erreichst mich entweder per oder gar nicht per Chat. Ohne das hätte es leider fast niemand genutzt. Untereinander nutzen sie nach wie vor Whatsapp und Telegram.

    Bei Android-Users, die kein Problem mit einem rufnummerbasierten Dienst haben, hat sich https://quicksy.im/ von @daniel als Wundermittel erwiesen.

    Having an #Emacs interface to #journalctl sounds great! Having two options is even better 🙂

    Do your modes, or at least one of them, work on a remote host? E.g. with #TRAMP?

    Because most of the time, I look at remote journals, not my local one. And I do all remote server stuff from my local Emacs.

    One of the more limiting things about Signal is you have to give out your mobile number to everyone. Even if it is a burner, I still don't want to advertise to the world that it's mine.

    Was happy to read today that Signal is now beta testing a new username feature.

    I never used Signal for three reasons. Requirement of phone number is one of them.

    The other two issues also need to get resolved:

    1. Signal is a centralized service on the Amazon cloud AWS. I want free choice of server, like with #Fediverse / #Mastodon. #proChoice.

    2. I want a first class citizen client for my OS (Linux / #Debian / #Mobian), not Electron bloatware. I do not use Android or iOS.

    (I'll stay with #Jabber / #XMPP, which exists since 1999 and still works fine.)

    I'm always amused by the lightweightness of #XMPP. I'm in the metro with virtually no signal, http can't even transfer headers and times out and I can hold a regular conversation over #jabber.

    So komische Leute, die Facebook, Whatsapp, Twitter oder Signal nutzen, vermutlich 🙂

    Läßt sich leider auf individueller Ebene nicht lösen. Es müssen Gesetze her, die untersagen, daß Unternehmen Daten über Menschen einsammeln, die kein qualifiziertes Einverständnis gegeben haben. Ein Upload ganzer Adressbücher dürfte gar nicht erlaubt sein.

    Same here. Kein Whatsapp und auch sonst keine zentralisierten Messenger, also auch kein Threema, Telegram, Signal und wie sie alle heißen. Sonst könnte ich ja auch gleich X statt Mastodon verwenden 🙂

    For the fun of it, you could install your own server, e.g. by @snikket_im and the gateway by @nicoco. It's a whole set of transports, not only for Signal, but also for Whatsapp, Telegram, Discord, Mattermost, Steam, Skype, Facebook Messenger, and Matrix.

    Then you could use a native Jabber client, e.g. by @dino, by @gajim or by @kaidan.
