Google, Microsoft and co stop respecting some long-term standards concerning e-mails. It is very difficult to host mail services nowadays.
For example: an old good practice was to use the internet provider SMTP, to limit spam. Because such "big" actors can authenticate you, and block emails sent by malwares. This is no more accepted by gmail, since 1 or 2 years.
@John_Livingston I had to give up running my own email servers about two years ago because it became way too difficult and time consuming. I still hate that decision.

(I use #XMPP every day with friends, family, colleagues. It doesn't look dead to me. But I started late using it seriously. Around 2014, when the hype was already over.)
