#Content lessons even more relevant in 2023 than previous years.

👉🏻 Own your domain name even if it's a "crappy" $5/year one.
👉🏻"Own your content" and as much of "the stack" as possible.
👉🏻 Control your distribution of your content.
👉🏻 If you aren't hosting it, ensure you have backups, archives, or access in case your provider shuts down tomorrow, changes terms, or does something with AI you don't agree with.
👉🏻 Social: broadcast but NEVER the only home. Includes (most cases) #Mastodon.

It not even September yet and i'm going to need therapy because of this #hurricane season.

This could be nothing, could change, odds could be a million to one (this morning's hype and clickbait on social doesn't help). But tell that to my anxiety.

Also this doesn't take anything away from the REAL danger happening now to Northern #Florida. Be safe.

It's funny to some #Mastodon and Bluesky users that say (rightly so) "these are good numbers" with thousands+ new users come to their platforms per week but poo poo Meta with it's 70+ million with #Threads (which I don't have $0.02 on yet).

If you don't care about your social network size, then not sure why either would matter. Personally I'm interested to see what happens when/if Threads joins #Fediverse. Until then I'm excited to see people exploring - reminds me of the early web 2.0 days.

That being said,I heard a good analogy from @davatron5000 on Shop Talk Show podcast:

"#Mastodon is like a HOA (home owner's association) - you moved in and there's rules to the neighborhood... apply to get in... but result is a controlled atmosphere and less about seizing chaos which is a lot about what OTHER social networks are about."

Mastodon is currently the best social platform currently out there IMO. ActivityPub is gaining steam with more accounts every week.

If you think "Enthusiasm for ActivityPub is being sucked out of the room" because of another social platform that isn't even built and open to the public... well it reads at best a knee-jerk reaction and at worse some form of jealously, close mindness, and negatively that was once associated w/ Twitter.

Not perfect but https://jointhefediverse.net/ is the best I think way to explain why someone should care at all about the Fediverse.

Personally I think a good tactic for most of the public to focus on features and pros/cons of Mastodon and other apps vs. trying to explain or mention #Fediverse at all.
