I need more garden space. Or a trellis for the cucumber. I lost both zucchinis to vine borers 😑 I have a bit of one in water in hopes it'll root.

But mostly I'm pleased! Just wish I had room for greens and eggplant.

If you got upset at me for pointing out that more people died of Covid under Biden than Trump, in large part because Biden rolled back common sense restrictions that were in place under Trump...

Then you'll hate me pointing out that Trump introduced a 25% tariff on Chinese EVs, and Biden is upping that to 100% tariff.

Maybe we should push for the US to subsidize car manufacturers like China does. We've got low end EVs they're just not low end enough.

Random question.

I have a 10 year old computer running Win10 that I will likely have to switch to some flavor of Linux in the next year or whatever. I basically use it for 3 programs and two of them will be available no matter what OS I use.

But my tape calculator is Windows only.... And it's so good......

Is there anything like DeskCalc that runs on Linux?

Edit to fix the part about Wne: I'll probably end up going with this but would like recommendations anyway.

Boosts appreciated.

So I ended up meeting the Mastodon team in New York this week. They have like three people doing the whole company. Three sweet European hacker guys.

I do want to support them, and this place. They say some people are working on a bridge between Mastodon and Bluesky, which I do think would be great for both. Though I wonder if people have noticed any changes since Threads was federated.

I'm reminded of when AOL connected to USENET in '93..and that was kinda bad for the culture.

cshlan,
@cshlan@dawdling.net avatar

@Rushkoff
I think the migration here after Musk bought Twitter has already changed the culture a lot.

Threads isn't totally federated yet, though. We can follow them if they want but I don't know how easily they can see our replies. And I don't think they can follow accounts here, yet.

Sculpting in Blender again, after months of using only MagicaCSG.

Switching tools after a long while requires readjusting to the different 3D viewport navigation controls. But muscle memory fixes that swiftly, and I quite enjoy mesh sculpting again, after lots of modeling with SDF primitives.

Updates will follow tomorrow.

Incredible how just in a few years, the smartphone went from

"a device that's nice to have and allows you to contact people, access your calendar, play games and look up bus schedules on the go"

to

"a device you're absolutely required to own and have access to at all times because if you don't, you don't get a bank account, health insurance, public transit, or basically any online service required for enrollment in a school or an employment contract"

That folks born over '70 have been exposed to Measles 'wisdom' I keep hearing is garbage. I'm born in '68 and almost everyone I know born around the same time has not had measles. If this is you get your MMR titers checked if you can.

cshlan,
@cshlan@dawdling.net avatar

@ckkellymartin
I believe that's based on the rate of cases during those years. We were likely exposed even without catching the disease.

There's even a theory that the reason the vaccine seems to not last as long these days is because we were getting boosted by exposure to the virus until the case rate plunged once the vaccination rate was high enough.

But it's certainly not a bad idea to get titers checked or just get the vaccine again if you haven't since childhood.

An interesting tidbit in my research on the affogato for our early summer How To. I make a lot of reference to Starbuck's famous Frappuccino in that article. The frappuccino obliterated the affogato's position in cafes when it was introduced.

But Starbucks didn't invent the frappuccino. They bought the recipe from the fellow who did, along with his entire coffee business.

That fellow is George Howell, the father of specialty coffee on the US east coast.

It's not just that Trump world is awash in lies, which it is. It's that they use dishonesty as a routine tactic, knowing right-wing media will amplify it (if not create it). Case in point: the Katie Britt fabrication about the Mexican drug cartel rape case. (It happened during the Bush term, not Biden's.) Listen to all of this. https://www.tiktok.com/@katzonearth/video/7344090454985624862

There are way more people with money offering (or being asked for) over the advertised rent to get an apartment than there are people getting help with rent. It's fighting over apartments that's driving prices up. Not aid.
@robolemmy

cshlan,
@cshlan@dawdling.net avatar

@helenslunch
All the less than 7500 people getting rent assistance in a market with how many apartments? That's a miniscule part of the market.

Rents increase because more people are moving here (it's gone from about 100k to nearly a million in the 30 years I've been here without much new building until the last few years) and Austin already had a tight apartment market in the 90s.
@FigMcLargeHuge

cshlan,
@cshlan@dawdling.net avatar

@helenslunch
Show me proof it doesn't matter and I'll believe it. There has been housing subsidizing for a long time. I had a subsidized apartment back in the 90s for a while. And yet prices didn't really spike until the last couple of years. I'll grant you it's possible subsidies cause landlords to raise rents a few dollars. But not to the degree we've seen lately.

What's happening lately is tenants are expected to bid for apartments. That's what's allowing the rents to skyrocket.
