Even though I never cooked when I was living in Southeast Asia (you.. really don’t need to), paying attention to food procurement and techniques helped me level up when I started cooking when I left that region.

(Eating street food there is often cheaper than buying ingredients and cooking yourself. In almost all SEA cities)

There’s a lot of stuff I felt I just ‘knew’ because I was around people who dealt with food all the time

@carrideen@c18.masto.host avatar

@skinnylatte One of the main reasons Chinatown veggies are so cheap is (I've heard) because those supermarket scanner systems are outrageously expensive. When you just ring people up you can save mega overhead.

Alright, lots of heavy discussions today, so let's talk about something silly!

What is a movie that always makes you laugh?

Personal pick:

Anything Mel Brooks, but Robin Hood: Men in Tights, it's just funny every time I watch it.

I know Althusser (caveat), but his insight that there is nothing outside of ideology (which for him is actions that support power, not beliefs) is undervalued. I'm so tired of obviously fascist patriarchal oppressors telling us they're "critical thinkers not ideologues" when they obviously do everything to uphold power as it is. You can't step outside of ideology without stepping into another ideological system. Better to know what system you are promoting rather than "unwittingly" back evil.

carrideen,
@carrideen@c18.masto.host avatar

One of the reasons I'm grateful for my Baptist upbringing is that it offered me an alternative ideology to step into when I was told to support police or military or capitalism or racism. I know that many Baptists have lost our roots in resistance, because they cannot or will not understand what The Pilgrim's Progress is modeling. The entire thing is about rejecting oppressive ideologies because you have a different motivation for everything you do than capitalists and oppressors.

carrideen,
@carrideen@c18.masto.host avatar

Americans are obsessed with the romance of revolution, of violently saying no to power, but because they are rarely clear about what they support instead of this, it devolves into chaos and rule of the cruelest every time. When you step outside the law to demand justice, you have to know what other than the law gives you meaning and guides your vision of the future. Not every resistor should be forced to invent their own dream of the universe; they fight for something not just against this.

carrideen,
@carrideen@c18.masto.host avatar

This is why the social justice movements of Occupy and BLM have been so powerful--they are guided by specific questions and policy changes that are about improving the lives of workers and minoritized people. So if course that are the movements that have been demonized as not having goals or an endgame--because their endgame would necessitate the end of the unchallenged, unmitigated right of the investor class to exploit suffering infinitely. "Hey, that's my moral chaos you're dismantling!"

carrideen,
@carrideen@c18.masto.host avatar

This is why I get frustrated by the tendency of the left to play "Who has the cleanest hands in the world?" as if inaction and silence make one pure and denouncing others for tilling our own fields is what sanitizes their hands even further. I know what field I'm tilling and why. I take a lot of time in conversation with people I agree with and disagree with to make sure I am clear about what I'm doing and why. I am guided by principles that improve over time, and I talk about how I've changed.

carrideen,
@carrideen@c18.masto.host avatar

Anyhow, if you haven't read The Pilgrim's Progress, I highly highly recommend it, except read it as a book about someone who becomes aware of the fact that everything he does supports an evil ideology and he's trying desperately to figure out how to find a way to live for justice. For some (Christian), the first step is to put your fingers in your ears and run screaming from your family. For others (Christiana), family may be what holds you steady and gives you hope. We each have a path to walk.

carrideen,
@carrideen@c18.masto.host avatar

And, most importantly, if you do not have a consciously-chosen system of values that you support with your actions, then the dominant ideology is the only one that sets the terms of your success or failure. The no. 1 reason that young people get downhearted about fighting for justice is that someone tells them it makes them less attractive, less marketable, less of a winner, and they have no way of saying, well, who the fuck wants to be attractive to you? Who wants to win at being Shit Prince?

carrideen,
@carrideen@c18.masto.host avatar

@MisuseCase It's weird living in a country whose dominant myth is that violent revolution changes the world for the better, when what it really does is create a vacuum for the most megalomaniacal, hypocritical, self-serving, and violent people to take control and write the rules. Even our supposedly radical left is often under the impression that the goal is winning and not giving power to minoritized people. The guillotine freed no slaves, enfranchised zero women, and Napoleon seized power.

2024 boardgame rehoming season is upon us! @mxtiffanyleigh and I have to get rid of games every 6 months or so, and selling them is way too tedious. Knowing they will get played helps us to part with them. If you live in North America and will pay us back for shipping (packing materials and USPS Ground), you can adopt some of these beauties for your game group. (If you live in NYC, you can come get them, but you do need to come to us in the Bronx.) https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1TMuZloPXN_mZuMmgmY87mKjzTo3wGtuhR5_ZS2vMJ7M

I am convinced that the effective altruists are a more dangerous cult than the fundies. These poor kids...

"The Collinses are atheists; they believe in science and data, studies and research. Their pronatalism is born from the hyper-rational effective altruism movement [...] which uses utilitarian principles and cool-headed logic to determine what is best for life on Earth."

And this is their cool-headed science" to justify hitting a 2-yr-old across the face

@kims I read this last night in bed and woke up from nightmares about it an hour later. It's one thing to say, the current ideology of bourgeois parenting is consumerist and bad, and it's entirely another to strike, ignore, isolate, and freeze your children as if that's some radical new strategy and not child abuse.

I have a soft spot for Libertarians even though I shouldn't and they don't deserve it. When I was a kid I had a weird neighbor who was always giving me Libertarian books... I wish I still had some of them they were WILD. He was a thorn in the side of the local, school board as well insisting that if they had an event at the school that involved politics Libertarians had to be included.

And in defense of the guy, he was about as likable and earnest as a Libertarian could be.

@futurebird @IPmonger @angst_ridden Yeah, there is a genuine obsession among many leftists with saying at least their hands are clean, because they simply never share any kind of community with anyone who benefits from oppression. But if you live in the US, you do benefit from oppression, just like British people in the 18th century benefited from slavery even if they never met an enslaved person. Better to have a voice and work for justice than to congratulate oneself for having clean hands.

carrideen,
@carrideen@c18.masto.host avatar

@futurebird @IPmonger @angst_ridden I've been accused by clean-handsers of suggesting that shared complicity is saying none of us are really guilty when I mean the opposite. Our complicity is a shared obligation to work for liberation all the time, and not to get high and mighty about accusing allies of hypocrisy. Identify the enemies of justice and fight them together, and also work on yourself too, finding ways to act more justly.

Have y'all ever had someone act like you were hurting them somehow by just liking a food?

Any time I buy or make kimchi, my Mom says it's so gross and she doesn't want any and just on and on. I never offer it to her, or make group food with it, but for some reason she seems offended by it, and I don't know why.

@stefan
And I'll turn down eternity unless
The melancholy and the tenderness
Of mortal life; the passion and the pain;
The claret taillight of that dwindling plane
Off Hesperus; your gesture of dismay
On running out of cigarettes; the way
You smile at dogs; the trail of silver slime
Snails leave on flagstones; this good ink, this rhyme,
This index card, this slender rubber band
Which always forms, when dropped, an ampersand,
Are found in Heaven by the newlydead...
