Guess what? There's a big ol' hole in the ceiling at the bookstore.

Guess why? A goddamn rat.

ajroach42,
@ajroach42@retro.social avatar

Hi!
My name is Andrew.

I run a bookstore ( https://hemlockbazaar.com ) and we, very unexpectedly, need to replace two walls and part of our ceiling, probably out of pocket.

I do a lot of other things. You can learn about some of them at https://andrewroach.net but that's out of date, because life keeps happening.

You can also learn about some of them at https://impractical.computer which is significantly less out of date, because it's brand new.

One of the other things I do is run a Makerspace ( https://ellijaymakerspace.org ) which needs a new A/C unit to survive the summer heat.

ajroach42,
@ajroach42@retro.social avatar

If you'd like to help us afford to repair our walls and ceiling or replace our A/C unit you can:

We support a community of about 20 people here in our small mountain town, and these are two of the latest in a series of large unexpected expenses that have plagued us all year.

Earlier this month we took a trip to Ahmedabad, where we met with veteran pulp authors H.N. Golibar, Bansidhar Shukla, and Ekta Doshi, all of whom will be featured in our Gujarati Pulp Fiction anthology, scheduled for December.

Pre-order here: https://www.blaft.com/products/the-blaft-anthology-of-gujarati-pulp-fiction

The meeting with H.N. "Atom" Golibar and family was especially amazing!

I always look forward to going back to Singapore to eat because, other than the 'street' food, the mid and fine dining scene has really exploded in the past couple of years.

For example, a Tamil take on 'omakase', a restaurant called AMMAKASE

(I am dying at the pun)

Book recommendation: I've been really enjoying @blaft's translated editions of pulp Urdu detective fiction. It's a really fun series - very over the top mysteries, pulp action, and an extremely fun detective/assistant dynamic. They've published four volumes in this series and the ebooks are only about $5 each.

2024 Fiction Thread. I mostly read mysteries, fantasy and science fiction and and trying to read more brown authors because i'm that kinda bougie.

  1. A Clue for the Puzzle Lady
    Parnell Hall. The book's real protagonist is a puzzle-solving alcohol-guzzling old lady who zips across the pages adding much confusion to the story. Well done. The book's other protagonists and their lives are kinda sad. If you solve the crossword upfront you will know enough to solve the murder.

  1. Sin is a puppy that follows you home by Balaraba Ramat Yakubu Translated from Hausa by Aliyu Kamal. it is an Islamic soap opera set in 1990's Nigeria. I could literally smell the streets. Very very good. Even though the cultural differences are great, the similarities are greater. good job @blaft

I know many random facts about Southeast Asia.

For example, the village of Atar in Sumatra, Indonesia has many migrants who move to Jakarta and other big cities to own or work in photocopy shops. As a result, there is a giant statue of a photocopy machine in the village

I'm looking for tips for good sci-fi movies that might have gone under the radar, hidden gems. They don't have to be amazing, just enjoyable, interesting or good in some aspect.

A tale of Ordovician squid civilization. They left very little evidence since they evolved to live in tidal straits rare, fresh water/salt water mixed environments they exploited then destroyed in 100,000 years.

There are also hints of a race of intelligent arthropods of the Carboniferous. They only last 50,000 years.

We might not even be the first smart ape.

A clear pattern emerges: the intelligence + radical environment shaping strategy has been tried and has failed many times.

    Fun connections.

    "Stereotype" is a printer's term. Moveable type is expensive. You don't want to keep it tied up longer than needed, so you make a mould from the set type and cast a plate from that.

    The "stereotype" is the mould.

    A "cliché" is what the French called plate made from that mould, it's onomatopoeia from the sound of removing the plate from the mould.

    "Boilerplate" is widely repeated text from the round stereotype castings of newspaper columns ready to throw on a drum press.
