@tess my friends call me “social responsibility”, my enemies call me “risk management”

cecton, to programming
@cecton@hachyderm.io avatar

one thing I learned in the past 10 years with my experience in #programming: lot of popular ideas are actually deeply wrong

you need to make your own experience to see if something is "good practice" or "bad pattern" because what the majority dictates is not necessarily what you will see happening in real life

one big red flag for me is when people refer to a famous big company or a very well known person. those ideas are based on faith, not actuality

armurray,
@armurray@mastodon.social avatar

@cecton it’s even more nuanced from what I’ve seen, there can be whole campaigns of numerous engineers who say something is “good”; however, when you unpack the underlying factors, there is a lot of fashion, bias, dependence on a high degree of expertise or tolerance for pain, and myopia toward future developments, integration or maintenance. The nuance gets lost amongst the hype

@mcc@mastodon.social avatar

Have you ever heard of the Ellsworth-Stevens effect? That's a principle from sociology that if you phrase a claim as being the result of a study or scientific research, people will just believe you and not check to see whether the study exists

armurray,
@armurray@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc there’s some other effect, where you name a result from a study and people accept the result at face value without realizing it’s possible for studies to be flawed, challenged or overturned, to accept the claim as the basis for an argument

previous VPE created a calendar invite for all of engineering, then left the company

the event stopped happening

a year has since passed

so, I finally decided to remove the event from my calendar, and for some reason, google decided to send an update to all the attendees that I had done so

…all of engineering 🫠

love this feature, so well-designed

AI has led to interest in new hardware form factors. But do we really need a pendant that records everything you say and hear then emails you a summary of your day?

@kf me, too, but OTOH if it’s not in the calendar it’s out of sight as they say

Microsoft's recently announced 365 Chat presents me with a tough choice. I'm not at all keen to share all my emails, documents, contacts, calendars with Microsoft. (Almost none of these are currently on a cloud.) But, I'll probably be out-competed on everyday efficiency by those that use it. What's your take? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZtXZV41zQZA

It would go a long way to fix the abuses by billionaires if using stock as collateral was treated as a capital gains event.

When stock gains are just on paper, they shouldn’t be taxed. But turn them into money - by selling, or using them as collateral - and they absolutely should be. https://www.reuters.com/business/media-telecom/elon-musk-borrowed-1-bln-spacex-same-month-twitter-buyout-wsj-2023-09-06/

trying out a garmin instead of my apple watch today, and it’s already a lot of data

also it’s like “kf did you know that you’re 31 but in the shape of a 37 yo???” and I KNOW goddamn why does it think I bought the watch 😂

armurray,
@armurray@mastodon.social avatar

@kf I’d like to hear more… I have a garmin, but was thinking of grabbing an Apple Watch to switch things up.. maybe I should just stick with garmin. I also have a Withings watch that is half decent

Are there people out there who are looking at AI/LLM-generated content as pollution?

Because that is the analogy that makes the most sense to me. It's creating huge externalities for the profit of a few - proliferating enormous amounts of digital pollution (as well as real-world greenhouse gas pollution).

The more AI/LLM churn out content for the internet, the dirtier the water, so to speak. Or the air. And the less it functions for users.

armurray,
@armurray@mastodon.social avatar

@chargrille yes, I hold this view

As always, the most embarrassing thing about corruption like this is that the more you learn about it, the more you find out how cheap it is. The man's letting himself be bought off for pennies.

You take my annual pay and multiply it up to a billion, and you find out that dollar for dollar these motherfuckers are buying off SCOTUS justices for less than I spend tipping a barista. If you've got a billion dollars this isn't even shake-out-the-couch money. It's nothing.

In "The Big Lebowski", Walter Sobchak reveals that his investigations of the man in the iron lung uncovered that he wrote "156 episodes" of the 1965 TV series "Branded", "the bulk of the series". However in fact Branded, which only ran for two seasons, only produced 48 episodes.
