Discord is laying off 1 out of every 6 employees while Twitch is laying off 1 out of every 3. How does a leadership team get to a point where they are getting rid of that many employees without there being a recession and face no consequences?

If I did my job that badly I’d be out on my ass.

"The Color Purple" star Taraji P. Henson says she is so tired of being underpaid because of her race and gender that she may stop acting altogether. "I hear people go, ‘You work a lot.’ I have to. The math ain’t mathing," she told Gayle King on Sirius XM. TODAY reports that clips of the conversation are going viral, and other actors including Gabrielle Union and Robin Thede are speaking out.

armurray,

@rit yeah, but the expense wouldn’t exist without the pet… in the end, a pet and travel both fall under discretionary/ recreational, so it washes both ways

does anyone have recommendations for shows to watch and/or video games to play on my PS5?

armurray,

@kf you have many good game recommendations, so I will try a few shows:

The Bear
Flight of the Conchords
Fargo
Twin Peaks (1990-1991)

You didn’t ask for films, but here a few I recently watched and loved:
CODA
In the mood for love
The quiet girl
Living (Ikiru remake)
Cinema Paradiso

"Elon Musk's SpaceX Valued at $175 Billion or More in Tender Offer"

I'm trying to shoehorn this into my brain.

"The most valuable US startup" and likely the greatest innovation in one-half century is worth only 4x Twitter.

https://finance.yahoo.com/news/spacex-tender-offer-values-startup-225853647.html

armurray,
@armurray@mastodon.social avatar

@VaughnVernon firstly, Twitter has been marked down and may be more like $11B today, secondly, if markets are efficient then the current capitalization of SpaceX is a projection of the sum of its future cash flows — which assumption do you think is wrong if so?

armurray,
@armurray@mastodon.social avatar

@VaughnVernon that’s a good point, although who is to say the SpaceX val is accurate… all market caps are somewhat suspect, it’s all conjecture to me. I’ve never been especially strong in finance, to me it looks more like fashion than science

Thinking about building a PC.

Again.

But I haven't done that in about 14 years, what should I be paying attention to?

armurray,
@armurray@mastodon.social avatar

@don was going to do the same thing recently, and after a deep look, decided not to. choice of GPU is fairly consequential these days

armurray,
@armurray@mastodon.social avatar

@don I want to exercise a bit of patience, see how specific prices change (esp Nvidia GPU) to get a feel for the market… I suspect people buy systems for a longer cycle than I recall — plus I’m keen on the Apple Vision Pro and don’t want too much vying for my attention. The Marvels is on its way to being the biggest flop of the MCU. The movie saw a 79% drop in ticket sales in its second week which is the worst of all time for a comic book movie. Morbius the previous champ saw a 74% drop in week 2 sales.

Seems the word of mouth thar this was a good movie couldn’t save it.

The super hero movie is on its way to joining the musical and western as a movie theater staple that audiences eventually got tired of watching.

https://screenrant.com/the-marvels-box-office-drop-worst-morbius-comparison/

armurray,
@armurray@mastodon.social avatar

@carnage4life the category is saturated, the effects tiring, there are too many plot lines and characters to enjoyably follow, the phase plan stinks, cosmic is boring, and that’s before a 6 on IMDb and a weak campaign for this film — audience is saying, the word is out, why should I bother shelling out my $$ when your reputation is that you release crap. The attempt to break the formula failed, the whole production biz at risk. You have to like Marvel a lot to invest this much in what they offer

This description of what happens if OpenAI doesn't like your IP/browser/whatever combo reads like a description of hell.

You have to complete 80 consecutive captchas without error.

What are the odds of even being able to do this? I find that a decent fraction of captchas (select the traffic lights / motorcycles / whatever) are actually wrong and I have to make incorrect choices to be allowed to proceed. Ironically, if you have make no "errors", you can only succeed by doing it fraudulently.

I've been wondering a lot about aging in software development.

Any > 40-year old developers out there that'd like to share their perspective?

How did you grow (technically, managing, etc...)? Picked up fields over others (embeded systems over web app, for instance)?

Would love to connect!

Boost for reach please 🙏

armurray,
@armurray@mastodon.social avatar

@remi @yellowbrickc heading into my fourth decade of software development, we call that aging. Have had a full career where I was able to explore a wide range of experiences: [all] industries, geographies, deployment targets and roles. This kept it interesting.

Started at the dawn of software engineering, so early on I was influenced by Grady Booch (via my supervisor, Tim Lethbridge). So patterns, HCI, cognitive aspects, staying close to the code, have always been part of my varied experience
