I strongly desire to see a UBI, or any other measure which means we don't require money to live!

Aside from a position that people shouldn't need to show their value to society in order to live... Looking at my own industry I think capitalists with the funds to spend are generally doing an atrocious job making these judgments!

(there's exceptions which prove the rule)

alpinefolk,
@alpinefolk@sunbeam.city avatar

@alcinnz the last few years I’ve become increasingly frustrated at the number of services that should be free as a benefit to society. They often not only have a few but are becoming more expensive and exclusive.

Generally there is no reason for these services to cost money other than the need for those providing them to be able to live under capitalism.

alpinefolk,
@alpinefolk@sunbeam.city avatar

@alcinnz I started a rant this morning but deleted it, about a local business creating meetings and events around climate and environmental strategies etc. These are conversations everyone in the community should have access and contribute to but they exclude those of us who can’t afford to pay the (reasonably substantial) entry fee(s).

Radio interview discussing the spectre of lower birth rates and falling population.
As expected they mention that it will produce less tax payers and slow GDP growth… it’s just straight up admitting that capitalism and “the economy” are a straight up ponzi scheme.

The loss of audiences to international streaming services has had a huge impact on the audience for NZ media. That affects funding and the number and/or quality of local shows

I’ve found myself moving back to #TVNZ+ and #MāoriTV to watch more NZ content. Both have some great local and international shows

In 1900, if you mined one ton of copper, you caused about 25 tons of waste.

In 2023, to mine the same one ton of copper, you cause almost 190 tons of waste.

Copper, like all other metals, is not disappearing in a flash. It is fading away, dissipating, being available in smaller and smaller quantities. That will result in more and more toxic waste, more and more damage to the environment for less and less return.

Finite mining on a finite planet

alpinefolk,
@alpinefolk@sunbeam.city avatar

@gerrymcgovern @crash_course I’m in the degrowth camp and believe the path to a sustainable future is less. However I think the evidence is that Michaux’s figures are wrong starting from erroneous assumptions. He runs the risk of pushing people into a state of resignation as nothing can be done.
I worry that he is promoting increasing mining that would lead to more damage to the environment.

"The Laptop That Wouldn't Die"

In a few of my blog posts on right-to-repair culture, I've mentioned my 12-year-old Thinkpad T420

It is: indestructible

My six-year-old Macbook Pro just died, so I'm using the thinkpad while I await a replacement

This Thinkpad has outlived two of my top of the line Macbooks

It was built when my eldest son was six ... he's now in college

And it's still going

My ode to it: https://clivethompson.medium.com/the-laptop-that-wont-die-0c478c3fe46c

@clive I just moved from my 12 year old Macboook pro to a 7 year old MacBook Air. They have done very well for me. In fact the MacBook pro is still serviceable just issues with apps now being incompatible.

That said I’m considering a secondhand Thinkpad as a Linux machine

alpinefolk,
@alpinefolk@sunbeam.city avatar

@clive I’ve been fortunate that all of my Macs have lasted a long time with minimal issues. Though I’m never certain if it’s how I use/care for my computers or just a bit of luck

I have a friend who has been a dairy farmer most of his life and now has vineyards. His farm truck is an old Subaru outback and has been for years.

Don’t tell me farmers need a Ute.

alpinefolk,
@alpinefolk@sunbeam.city avatar

@vik not really. In my experience anytime you’re doing anything like that you are using a quad bike or the tractor.

alpinefolk,
@alpinefolk@sunbeam.city avatar

@vik fair enough, I don’t know your land. In my experience dairy farming and strawberry farming we did have a small 2nd flat deck Ute. For strawberries a van would haven been better. For dairy we used the tractor for any rough terrain.

I want the media to start asking all political parties what their plan is to drop our emissions by 25-26% in the next two terms to meet our commitments to the Paris agreement. Or the ~48% we need to ensure we stay under 1.5deg

I’ve been enjoying this game (free, web based, mobile friendly) in which the goal is to save the planet from environmental crises while increasing global equality.
I assumed it would be easier but it does a good job of making you think about the speed of change and trade offs for resource use, emissions, and political environment.

https://play.half.earth/

The premise is post a socialist revolution so if you expect we can fix our problems under the neoliberal, capitalist status quo it might not be for you. Then again you might learn something from this perspective.
