The #hummingbirds have returned, this one was in the front garden. We had one (we think it was just one) hanging around through the summer, we’d spot it nearly every day, but now there are several chasing each other around our house. If like last year they’ll stay until the first good cool front of the fall blows through, sending them on their way south. Which, sad to see them go, but we really need that cool front.

Our first #autumn cool front is passing through, has been raining most of the night, by tomorrow we’ll fully feel the effects and our terribly long, hot & dry summer will be over. For those in northern climates I imagine this is equivalent to getting your first warm day of spring after a long winter. Anyway, with autumn on my mind (my favorite season), here’s a #ThrowbackThursday photo from a glorious fall day spent at the Gorges du Verdon in southern #France.

Yesterday’s annular eclipse as viewed from a city park on the outskirts of Hondo, #Texas. There was a broad layer of high clouds when we arrived but luckily they broke up & blew away just in time for the main event. Had to get up in the wee hours and drive 225 miles (362 km) west to get right in the center of the path but it was well worth it.

54 years ago today, the effort of thousands resulted in sending humans to orbit and land on the #moon. My dad was one of them, he worked on the guidance system of the Lunar Module. He received this desk model then, and it was passed on to me after he passed. It was in bad shape, my siblings & I did much damage to it when kids, but a couple of years ago I sent it off to a person that specializes in Lunar Module model restorations & he did a great job.

Taking a long weekend trip out to the Hill Country of Central #Texas to enjoy the nice autumn weather. This is Gruene Hall near New Braunfels. Built in 1878 it’s the oldest continually operating dance hall in Texas & has become a bit of a mecca for Texas musicians.

There’s a small window of time each day to try to photograph the #hummingbirds in the front #garden. Just before sunset our front lawn is shaded enough that you can stand out there and not melt but the zinnias by the house still have good light. Only lasts about 20 minutes before it gets too dim. The hummingbirds zip in & out quickly so you wait & wait then suddenly movement…swing the lens around & try to find them…focus…and with luck sometimes it all comes together.

Back home now convalescing with my doppelgänger/support cat following a mishap that put me in the hospital for over a week and leaves me with restricted mobility for a while. The interruption also made me lose my goal of posting at least one photo here each day for a year, was only about a month away from reaching it. Oh well, c’est la vie.

We surprised each other while I was watering in the back corner of the yard this morning and it zipped back under the fence before I could get a photo but a few moments later it came back and went along the fence for a bit before disappearing back under to the woods behind our property. Posted to a local FB group to confirm the ID but 99% sure it’s a Plain-Bellied Water snake (they are non-venomous). About 3 foot (0.9m) judging by the fence boards.

I’m probably the last person on earth to learn this, or at least the last Texan to learn this: lady longhorns…have long horns. I just assumed big horns = bull. There’s two longhorn cows that live on land near my neighborhood, every time I drive by I say ‘I should take their photo’. Finally, on Sunday, I drove by & saw they were out. Went back to house, grabbed camera and swung back. Looking at the photos later I was udderly amazed to see…udders on them thar #longhorns.

Throwback #Caturday to early 2010, not long after I adopted Jasper from a local rescue group. He doesn’t look very amused by these Mr Potato Head glasses, but I’m sure he got his revenge on me later. His 15th birthday is coming up in September and he’s still going strong, though we’re both growing creakier and crankier as the years pass.

The Capela dos Ossos (Chapel of Bones) in Évora, #Portugal. The words over the chapel entrance say "We bones that are here await yours." It is indeed a place for solemn contemplation of our mortality and the transient nature of existence. But I also found the place to be quite humerus.
