@futurebird has been discussing actual crime rate vs perceived rate.
One aspect was all the crime info people get in the news. That it skews the real impact.
I’m torn as I work EMS and we have the police radio channel.
The number of times a day dispatch has violent crime reports that get held because no cop is free from the other calls is disturbing. On top of the non-violent reports.
I know I’m in a skewed view, but it is scary that police can’t respond to an assault for 30 min.

A 12 percent drop in the US murder rate is wild. And I say that as someone who has been spitting stats and rolling my eyes at people who say "crime has gotten so bad..."

It hasn't been "bad" by any real metric since the late 90s and even when it was "bad" if you're middle class (and not at risk of domestic violence*) you have zero things to worry about even in 1989.

*domestic violence improved for a few decades but then stalled. But, when people fret about crime this isn't what they mean.

TopWKone,

@mpjgregoire @futurebird I wonder if some of that drop is due to the same things that lowered my city’s murder drop.
The EMS agencies have been teaching “stop the bleed” to schools, churches, and community groups, over 3k people.
Last year was the first time I responded to shooting where by standers were holding pressure or had put on a tourniquet. I had five such calls this year.
The number of shootings was up 17% but murders dropped by 6%.
(I’m a paramedic btw)

I'm starting to really like Jamelle Bouie's writing on politics. While he still essentially has a liberal perspective (as opposed to a radical or left perspective) he's really good at identifying and criticizing liberal process, technicality and hypocrisy-based criticisms of the right.

These are criticisms that don't address the gulf in values, morality, or outcomes, but focus instead on things like finding hypocrisies, or showing how the right is failing to live up to the constitution. 1/

TopWKone,

@futurebird @zzzeek in right leaning threads they say the same things about 3rd parties stealing the vote, spoilers, never working at local levels and causing the Democrats to win.
A classic is Kentuckys Governor. 4 years ago he won by 5k votes. The libertarian and constitutional party got 28k votes.
They were not going to vote democrat.
When rumore that the working family party was going to run, the D&R’s made ballot access too hard. So now the Governor is on his own

We grew a decent batch of carrots for a low-effort container garden.

I keep saying "next year we should get serious, have like 20 containers, automate the watering system, the light up here is so good."

Then we could sell bespoke carrots.

TopWKone,

@futurebird we have five 2 x 8 x 1 1/2 foot container gardens. This year we grew long beens, carrots, turnips, plum tomatoes, and kale in one.
Head lettuce, Hopi pale gray squash, and dikon radish in another.
Leaf lettuce, broccoli, compfrey, and another long bean.
Turned one into a strawberry bed.
And the last we “rested” and used for building compost with table scraps.

The police shot a 63 year old man while trying to evict him from his home. The elderly man had been taken in by "sovereign citizen" conspiracy theories much to his son's frustration.

These theories made him more vulnerable to police violence. He also may not have been mentally well.

The house he was evicted from used to belong to his brother, but a corporation recently bought it for $25,000, then evicted him.

This story is a nexus of senselessness.

TopWKone,

@futurebird I don’t know who would do evictions if the sherif or police didn’t.
Private security? Vigilantes?

TopWKone,

@futurebird ok a social worker might be an option. I don’t think this guy would have been receptive to anything but you don’t know.
Still for an eviction I would want a sheriff there to enforce the process. I couldn’t make a 30 yo person who refused to leave I’m no mma fighter.

TopWKone,

@HeavenlyPossum @futurebird so anyone could take over your property, refuse to leave, and you could do nothing to regain it?
One of my worries when I was mobilized was someone would break into my home while I was gone and live there and destroy the place.
That has happened. It takes police to get them out.

TopWKone,

@VoxofGod @futurebird so if someone stops paying their rent. Nothing should be done unless they find a new place for them to move to that they are willing to go?
Why would anyone pay rent then? You could not be kicked out unless someone found a place you were willing to move to that day for what you were paying, nothing.

TopWKone,

@CStamp @futurebird yes people want a return on the money they invest.
Unless you are advocating the government own all property, business, and end paying of salaries a return is what motivates people to invest or work.

I'm sorry, but I don't think a poll where Biden has 49% and Trump has 46% is "good news for Democrats"

Especially when a significant portion of those who supported Biden in such a poll aren't thrilled about it.

Further likely fewer than 60% of eligible voters will even vote. There are a lot of people alienated from and apathetic towards the political landscape despite many dramatic events and high-stakes issues.

It's a difficult topic because it can't be reduced to a single reason.

TopWKone,

@futurebird my biggest issue is the hypocrisy of politicians.
They say one thing when in power then another when out.
They don’t actually fix things just tinker.
That makes it hard to justify the effort to go vote when your vote seldom makes any change.
My vote will not change who Kentucky goes for. Nor who my congress rep is. That is decided in the primary.
