hello~

How’s everyone doing? Anybody doing anything fun this weekend?

I’ve been trying to cope with cicada season so I’m going to stay inside this weekend and chill out away from those awful things.

Hope everyone is swell 😘

TG_Esq,
@TG_Esq@mastodon.online avatar

@jessica Hello! A three-day weekend for me, with some study and then family things tomorrow. A pretty good mix, by my standards.
Winter here, so no cicadas though...

TG_Esq,
@TG_Esq@mastodon.online avatar

@maculata
Maybe people will stop doing it when they hear a government department came up with it. 🤞

TG_Esq,
@TG_Esq@mastodon.online avatar

@maculata I never learnt it, but as a teenager I knew a large number of scout/rover types who did. Every party, 18th, 21st, even a couple of weddings, it would come on and every one of them would get up and do it. At the time I felt very left out, but later I realised I'd been lucky.

TG_Esq,
@TG_Esq@mastodon.online avatar

@maculata 😬
(I may be deported now I've publicly admitted I never learnt it.)

What are the questions you see or get asked the most about #FountainPens?

Gathering questions for a fountain pen FAQ on the @penfount website

TG_Esq,
@TG_Esq@mastodon.online avatar

@paradoxmo @penfount

Mainly questions related to ink, e.g.

  • How can I fill a fountain pen without getting ink everywhere?
  • Are they safe to carry around or will they leak on my bag, clothes, etc.?
  • Are they suitable for everyday use, if the ink isn't waterproof?
penfount, to fountainpens
@penfount@penfount.social avatar

#FPQuestion of the day:
Are expensive pens worth it to you? What is your ceiling amount that you would not exceed to buy one pen? Which pen(s) could tempt you to break that ceiling?
#FountainPens

TG_Esq,
@TG_Esq@mastodon.online avatar

@penfount
I love writing with a beautiful pen on just the right paper, so I'd definitely love to buy a few more expensive pens.
But ultimately, fountain pens are tools for me, and I need to be comfortable with taking them with me and using them every day. So a metal body Kaweco Al Sport and a metal Lamy Safari are about as fancy as things are for me, along with a dozen or so cheaper wirkhorses.
That said, most pens are quite expensive by the time they reach Australia.

38 minutes to the new year, which means it's safe to be outside for about 28 minutes before hillbillies start firing off guns and fireworks

Happy new year Eddie, and here's to a creative, healthy and hopeful year ahead.

It's difficult to say, but I'm hoping for a more optimistic 2024 as well.

Happy Birthday Eddie!
I hope you're making a festival of it, celebrating with good people and as you want to be celebrated.
The law in this part of the world demands a birthday be celebrated with Altered Images, so I must comply. 🎂 🎈

*scrolls through my instance’s # Trending timeline, noting the various hot topics of the moment.

Human Rights for refugees.

Rise of fascism.

Holiday driven capitalism.

Human rights for trans/queer people.

Pandemic

Human rights for humans.

Unemployment.

Poor healthcare.

War.

…. And sitting up the top of the list, trending at # 1, is my stupid joke about not being bitten by a werewolf.

It’s a stupid joke, and holds zero real importance. I didn’t write it. I found it on the internet somewhere. I have no idea who the original author is. It’s copypasta like almost all the jokes and memes I toot. But when I arrived on Mastodon over a year ago, silly jokes seemed to be rare, so that’s what I’ve endeavoured to provide. Silly jokes and dumb memes. Good ones though. Usually tasteful. Always with AltText. And with the aim of lightening the mood and lifting the spirits of this incredible community. Usually. Mostly.

I still sometimes get a little uncomfortable that they out-trend all that serious important stuff though.

TG_Esq,
@TG_Esq@mastodon.online avatar

@dgar
All those serious topics worry me greatly too, which is why I'm so pleased that you posted the Elton John joke many months ago. I think about it every few weeks and smile every time.

(For those playing at home, it was along the lines of:
Elton John bought a treadmill for his pet rabbit. It's a little fit bunny.)

So I might have a coffee date of sorts on Sunday? That’s exciting.

She loves heavy music, especially dark music, and I was a dumbass delightful and mentioned I make music and now she’s gonna listen to Salvation and I guess that means we’re having the litmus test early in this conversation.

My life is too interesting for my own good.

This tumbled rock isn't as cool as @TheresaReason's, but it has a nice weight and we've become firm friends since I found it a few months ago.

I haven't joined many #Discord servers, but the ones I have seem to die off quite quickly. What is the secret of the ones that last?

Days 1-3: Oh this is amazing! I've really found my people.

Day 6: May not be the right place to ask this, but [esoteric question]?

Day 11: Crickets. 🦗

A post by @dgar reminded me that I first joined the #Fediverse one year ago this week.
I've greatly enjoyed my time here, met some lovely people, shared a lot of amazing music, found the value in community rather than in the volume of one's online voice.
It's not perfect, but nowhere is. And it's a much better base to build something meaningful on than the precarious and distorted attention farms of corporate social media.
Thank you to everyone working hard to support us here.

In the Necropolis just behind Glasgow Cathedral stands this gravestone marking the final resting place of James Jeffary. The Professor of Anatomy at the nearby University between 1790 and 1848, Jeffray played a key part in one of the strangest events the city has ever witnessed.

In Ocotober 1819, a man by the name of Matthew Clydesdale was condemned not only to be hung for murder but, as was customary at the time, to be subjected to public dissection by Professor Jeffray once dead.

@thisismyglasgow The jugular-stabbing professor, dissecting corpses and inventing chainsaws... the historical horror movie crossover for our times... 😬
