I think we all know this is wrong.

Okay, maybe this is my middle aged person rant, but it seems like films used to be lit better. It's like they got better cameras and better editing tools, and thought we'll just fix everything in post, but something got lost. When you see great lighting, you really appreciate the art form it is.

This is the same set of pictures but in gray scale

@RickiTarr

The A24 effect? Some newer movies are unwatchable for their low- and/or tinted-light. It's intentional.

Neat_hot,
@Neat_hot@beige.party avatar

@RickiTarr Day-for-night filming seems to be making a big comeback as well. (Shooting a scene during the day and then slapping on a dark blue filter so that it looks like night.) Maybe it never really went away, but I only used to notice it in old movies, and now I see it all the time.

Okay, I won't say this is always true, but it almost always is in my experience.

I grew up and spent nearly all of my life poor, and I know this much is true:

@RickiTarr Poor people simply have more positive experiences with sharing. They are more likely to have experienced the thankfulness on the receiving end and therefore try to replicate and "repay" with their small means.

Dated a girl back in highschool and university. Her dad had passed away and left her $20M in trust, which she could access once she turned 18.

I was just scraping by working part time and paying my way through university. She wanted to go to NYC to see a Broadway show and do the tourist thing. I said I couldn't afford that, and it ended up in a huge fight.

When we ate out, I was expected to pay. And she made sure to let me know that my beat up Ranger wasn't up to her standards. She bought herself a Volvo 740GLE as a high-school graduation present, about $30k at the time. No way I could compete with that. When we went out, she insisted I drive and put fuel in it.

Eventually, I pulled the plug. She was pretty and could be nice, but mostly, uh, difficult. Yeah, I'm a slow learner.

Also knew a guy who's a heir to a billionaire. Had I not known who his father was, you'd never have guessed.

He worked as an engineer, was good at his job, and worked hard. Would head out to the pub on Fridays with the rest of us and drove a Mazda3 and used an ancient Nokia brick.

He was really empathetic to the people around him, and if we were buying rounds, he'd go along with the rest of us, no question. He also did some charity work, but I've long since lost track.

So I guess my experiences are mixed.

I do Bookkeeping and admin for small nonprofits and congregations. It's always the people giving smaller amounts who cover the fees on CC donations. Wealthy people rarely do, even if they're giving large gifts that are going to lose a big chunk in fees.
They have never had to considered how much fees impact the bottom line. Or they don't care, because they get to write off the whole amount regardless of how much disappears before the org gets anything.

@RickiTarr I used to work in San Francisco.

Out boss "took us to lunch" - and then, individually, sent us a message stating what we owed and his Venmo.

I may have reneged on that debt.

@RickiTarr at uni i used to have a friend who made a shitload of money and was very generous. I tried in my very limited way to be generous back but i always felt the self-afflicted sting of not being enough. Wish I could run into him now when I can afford something nice to eat and drink

VVitchy,

@RickiTarr

Underground lair, not being sarcastic.

Heck give me a cave to hide in and make weird noises at rando spelunkers that stumble in, and I'd be good

RolloTreadway,
@RolloTreadway@beige.party avatar

@RickiTarr Ideally, country with no neighbours but with reasonably easy access to the small basic town.

(There are many such places in my near vicinity but I can't afford them.)

Sir_Osis_of_Liver,

Between 50k and 200k population is ideal.

Currently in a place with 800k, too many.

@RickiTarr

I'm "country with a few neighbors." Lived in cities (DC/NY/LA/SF) for 30+ years and they were great *then. I'm 66 and have no desire to even visit a large city anymore. I crave peace, quiet, nature and communion with animals for as long as I have left. I posted a couple nights ago about the "soul-killing" suburbs, and I'm feeling that keenly these days. x

@RickiTarr Real talk, I've always wanted to buy one of those old surplus missile silos the government has sold off and refit it to look like a hobbit hole. Underground lair all the way...

dabertime,
@dabertime@mstdn.social avatar

@DemocracySpot @RickiTarr I feel this.
I need and appreciate the easy, quick access to many services that the city provides, but not the city itself.
I'm fortunate to live at the very edge / city limits, with access to wide open spaces and wilderness areas literally minutes away.
A 5 minute bike ride away from home and I'm in the woods where I can see deer, moose, beaver, birds of all kinds, fox, etc.. and have so far avoided bears.
Best of both worlds for me.

I have often walked
Down the street before,
But the pavement always stayed
Beneath my feet before
All at once am I
Several stories high,
Knowing I'm on the street where you live
Are there lilac trees
In the heart of town?
Can you hear a lark in any other part of town?
Does enchantment pour
Out of every door?
No, it's just on the street where you live
And oh, the towering feeling
Just to know somehow you are near
The overpowering feeling
That any second you may suddenly appear
People stop and stare
They don't bother me,
For there's no where else on earth
That I would rather be
Let the time go by,
I won't care if I
Can be here on the street where you live
People stop and stare
They don't bother me,
For there's no where else on earth
That I would rather be
Let the time go by
I won't care if I
Can be here on the street where you live,
Can be here on the street where you live,
Can be here on the street where you live

i like small cities near the sea

Y'all I went to a speakeasy tonight, and you had to find the way in. There was an old phone with a secret panel, and you had to open it and ring a doorbell, and then you had to go online, and find the password. It was We Jazz June. So, I got curious and it was from this poem:

A sweet little girl said I was pretty today, and my first instinct was to correct her, and seriously, that kind of bullshit is why girls and women have to struggle with self image throughout their lives. So, I said, thank you, and told her she looked pretty too.

Like imagine saying, Actually kiddo, I'm fat, and short, and I have a big ole moon face, and weird hair, and...
I don't want to put that energy out in the world anymore. Anyway, y'all look pretty today.

@RickiTarr This. So much this. 💯

And as hard as it is for most women to learn this, it seems twice as hard for trans women. 🤦‍♀️

Thank you for being an example and spelling it out so clearly! Seriously. 💖

Okay, this is kinda long, but it's also really funny. Watch it or don't watch, it's fine, I care about you being entertained, but I don't want you to feel uncomfortable. Listen, it's just a guy giving a Snake legs, it's a totally normal affront to god.

@RickiTarr It’s me, but in the first job, I went to something better paying & the second one laid me off at the start of Covid after I spent 2 years organizing their shit show.
The first job went under less than 6 months after I left. I often wonder how the second one is doing. Limping along, I suppose, though they do have the color coded letter templates I left behind.
