Who knew Mushrooms can be tasty and flame retardant 🤷‍♂️

The level of innovation and impact is very impressive! I hope consumer behavior picks up on this trend!

@julieofthespirits @bookstodon I guess different people different tastes 🤷. My first Dostoevsky was Crime and Punishment and right from the start I was hooked! When I had started I had expected to find it slow moving. I think he is great at writing realistic characters and I enjoy character driven books. Dostoevsky is one of my favourite writers now, especially after TBK which is my favourite out of C&P, Demons and TBK.

NASA’s Psyche mission is on its way to this huge metal asteroid. The space rock — possibly the exposed core of a planet that didn’t finish forming — could reveal details about the Solar System’s origins and also provide a way to actually study planetary cores.

Born in 1896, Ida Noddack was the first scientist to suggest the principle behind nuclear fission. But Otto Hahn demonstrated this (with Lise Meitner! & Fritz Strassmann) & he won the Nobel prize.

Noddack also discovered rhenium (atomic ) & predicted , but couldn’t confirm it experimentally, so Segrè & Perrier were later credited.

She tried to speak up that the ideas for fission & began with her, but it lost her credibility. https://royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/rsnr.2014.0009

@yunchtime @bookstodon yes, and precisely this atmosphere helps in maintaining a good pace. #TheBrothersKaramazov is my third #dostoevsky and one of my favourite things about his writing is that the characters feel like real people. Even the female characters, Grushenka and Katarina are well-written. Also, in this book, the whodunnit part is also done well. Usually I find most murder mysteries too easy to solve, but this book has kept me interested.(I have training from #agathachristie lol!)

@yunchtime @bookstodon oh I love what Dostoevsky I have read! Just last night I finished #TheBrothersKaramazov and loved it. Now I plan to put into words what I felt about the book over the weekend. I've read C&P and Demons by Dostoevsky and liked them. But I think TBK has become my favourite. Not sure what to dig into next. Someone suggested Fathers and Sons by Turgenev. And speaking of Grushenka, I love how she is first introduced as this typical vampish "other woman" who later..(cont below)

@yunchtime @bookstodon who we later get to know as this wonderfully complex woman who has her own thoughts and agency. She comes across as someone I would like to know better. Something similar can also be said about Dimitri. Initially, he doesn't come across as someone I would be able to respect much, but he turns out to be a complex human being with his heart in the right place. And the ending is so bittersweet!

@yunchtime @bookstodon thank you so much for all these recommendations! ☺️🥰 Now I have a sufficiently long TBR list now! After finishing TBK I was starting to get anxious wondering what all books to read next, and I was in the mood for more well written Russian novels. And yes, I had been wondering about The Master And Margherita, and now I will definitely try it out. Sending you hugs and kisses because I am feeling so happy 😊 😘 Yay!

Climate-driven extreme heat may make parts of Earth too hot for humans. A study findings revealed that a rise of 2 degrees Celsius above preindustrial levels would subject the 2.2 billion inhabitants of Pakistan and India’s Indus River Valley, the one billion individuals in eastern China, and the 800 million residents of sub-Saharan Africa to prolonged periods of heat exceeding human tolerance each year.

Elon Musk endorsed users who have posted ‘wrong and unverifiable things’ while paid-for accounts spread fake news. While Twitter has previously been where many turn to get real-time news, the platform’s changes (and rise in AI) have made user feeds a minefield for discerning fact from fiction. And the scary part — its likely only going to get worse.

Researchers have demonstrated a general strategy to achieve the long-term stability of plastrons (known to be unstable underwater) on aerophilic surfaces for previously unattainable underwater applications by taking inspiration from diving bell spider, Argyroneta Aquatica, which spends most of its life underwater. This can open up a range of applications in biomedicine and other industries.

@robertnorlyn infections caused mostly by rhinoviruses and sometimes human coronaviruses are generally called "colds", while COVID-19 caused by SARS-CoV-2 is not called a cold. Firstly, the overall symptoms and pathophysiology of COVID-19 are different from usual colds. Also, SARS-CoV-2 is a modified version of SARS-CoV, that causes SARS and both diseases share common features. I think COVID-19 was not called SARS - 2 to not scare the common people. So COVID-19 is not a cold.

For context, these lines refer to people shouting and unburdening themselves in taverns. I think these lines are a fitting testament to the state of social media now. A very astute comment on the unchanging nature of human behaviour over time.

There was a poll that stated—Rowling’s opening line in the HP series is one of best in the world. Someone posted about how there are a bunch of other opening statements that are better.

Here’s one of my personal favorites, from Gabriel Garcia Marquez (in English):
“It is inevitable — the scent of bitter almonds always reminded him of the fate of unrequited love.”

What are some of your favorite opening lines in literature? 😊
