Is it just me, or has Microsoft gone completely crazy? They are implementing spyware that takes screenshots every second and forcing AI integration. Why would anyone willingly purchase this? Anyone with experience in computer or information security knows that it is a bad idea, even if it is locally done. Just don't do it. Yet, here we are, and they are doubling down on this idea. https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/05/microsofts-new-recall-feature-will-record-everything-you-do-on-your-pc/

@nixCraft apart from the fact it's a waste of resources, making a slow OS even more unresponsive. We need a competitor that doesn't insist on overcharging on the related hardware.

@tippfehlr @nixCraft my mom does. She hasn't got the patience to hunt drivers. Open source is great for people who know how computers work.

@tippfehlr @nixCraft not without help. Believe me, I've tried.

@tippfehlr @nixCraft she can't install Windows on her own, nor maintain it. Even running installation files id challenging. Don't get me wrong, I love Linux distros like Mint an Ubuntu (being more of a debian guy myself). But getting people past the friction proved harder than I hoped.

Let me tell you a story about two railways in two large European countries

In one, they’ve just completed the delivery of the biggest new fleet of high speed trains ever, and high speed trains run hourly on pretty much every line. Off peak tickets are cheap, and if you pay for a flexible ticket you can take any train.

In this country regional trains run hourly, are cheap to take (there’s a cheap national monthly pass) and passenger numbers are steadily rising.

JorisMeys,
@JorisMeys@mstdn.social avatar

@jon as a Belgian with German family and about 30 years of experience using both nets: the performance and trustworthiness of the German railways crashed after privatisation. Long story short: TGV is now more reliable than ICE.

Also, SNCF status is far more nuanced than you paint here. They operate mostly as a private company.

I said it before and I'll say it again: scientific journals have hardly any relevance any more, except for academic careers.

JorisMeys,

@firefly AI is not the only problem. The fact those articles got published is merely a symptom of a far larger problem, mostly created by the combination of carreers depending on number of publications and for-profit scientific publishers. Even without AI many publications contribute nothing. I have seen people reinvent linear models as a "powerful new method".

@JorisMeys@mstdn.social avatar

I stumbled upon a quote from Dr. Dirk von Schneidemesser. He described #cycling in #Germany as "normalized but marginalized". And that completely describes cycling in #Belgium as well.

It means biking gets some space and investment to stimulate it, but priority is always given to motor traffic in both investment and amount of public space taken.

#bike priority roads like in #Ghent are a nice start, but we need a shift in thinking.

A nice vid about this:

PS 1Gotta admit that the point about the object systems in R is somewhat spot on
PS 2 gets a dishonorable mention
PS3 I will continue to find ways to continue using all 4 of the aforementioned languages, as they are all performant and deliver in complementary ways.

@arnaudlerouzic @jospueyo @ChristosArgyrop @rstats nah. I use both R and (a bit of) Python, and whatever he complains about in R goes for Python as well.

Don't think so? matplotlib.

R has many flaws, but the one it doesn't have is to pretend it's a one-stop-fix-all powerhouse. It's a tool for reproducible and interactive advanced data analysis, and for that, it's still unbeatable.

When science showed in the 70s that gas stoves produced harmful indoor air pollution, the industry reached for tobacco’s PR playbook by:

✖️ casting doubt on negative findings
✖️ funding its own biased research

There’s still plenty of debate about whether gas stoves belong in homes, but it’s important to know where the “evidence” comes from, and to expose the tactics that vested interest groups have used for years.

@TheConversationUS in all honesty, the amount of woodburning done in residential areas shows that reduction of air quality by gas stoves is not something people worry about. If they would, woodstoves would be illegal in residential areas. But here we are, coughing away due to the neighbours "cosy warmth".
