“What would be informative: A minute or two of unedited video showing Trump’s rambling, incoherent and deranged rants. Rather than merely “fact check” the nonsense blizzard, reports can explore the unprecedented nature of his rhetoric, illustrate the deterioration in his thinking and speech, and discuss how an obviously irrational and unhinged leader casts a spell over his devoted following.” How to report on the election https://wapo.st/45d5wpk

Voted in today, a place where the Democratic primary determines some of the ultimate races. One race really struck me as emblematic of the future, assuming constitutional democracy survives in the U.S. 1/

heidilifeldman,
@heidilifeldman@mastodon.social avatar

With the Republican Party having degenerated into a cultish, criminal, evangelical Christian organization, it is no longer a meaningful participant in U.S. democratic politics. So, the Democratic Party is going to absorb many people into its right flank. My prediction: if U.S. constitutional democracy survives, the Republican Party will not, and the Democratic Party will eventually split into two parties, one more to the left and one more to the right. 4/4

#US Lawmakers #expensed millions in 2023

>300 #House lawmakers were reimbursed ≥$5.2M for #food & #lodging while on official business in Washington last year under a new, #TaxpayerFunded prgm that doesn’t require receipts.
The prgm, which kicked off last yr after a #Republican-led House panel passed it, was intended to make it easier for lawmakers to maintain separate homes in DC & their home districts.

An earlier version of this article said that Rep (R-Fla.) was the reimbursement program's top spender for 2023. That analysis was based on data released by the as of last week. But additional data The Post reviewed Tuesday showed that Rep (R-Michigan) was reimbursed for more than Gaetz was.

A must-read from @ProPublica: New investigation details "significant financial benefits" that have gone from Trump world to witnesses in his court cases -- is not surprising, in a way.

https://www.propublica.org/article/donald-trump-criminal-cases-witnesses-financial-benefits

Only the latest, and perhaps starkest yet, reminder that it's all corruption, all the time in Trump world.

I hear that Trump apparatchiks were trying to get this article suppressed, so please read it and pass along the link to everyone you know.

What if instead of polling, Does Trump's felony conviction make you more or less likely to vote for him?" instead poll, "Does GOP's wholesale attack on rule of law make you more or less likely to vote for it?"

"Does fact Trump found guilty of defrauding university students, charity donors, banks, and NY state make you more or less likely to vote for him?"

"Does fact Trump pardoned Steve Bannon for defrauding his own supporters make you more or less likely to vote for him?"

Hello people of the US, Germany here.

We have a bit of experience with a convicted felon and radical right-wing extremist becoming leader of our country.

Our advice: Don't do it.

#TrumpTrial Thurs 30 May 2024 🧵#Deliberations continue

Justice #Merchan says he believes that the #jury wants him to repeat a significant portion of the #JuryInstructions.

He will read pages 6-35.

Each page yesterday took him just a little more than a minute, so this will take >30 mins.

Between that & the testimony readbacks, also expected to take >30 mins, there will likely be >1 hour this morning w/the jury in the courtroom, not actively deliberating.

My favorite bit → At the presentence interview, a or working for the dept may also talk to , during which time the defendant can “try to make a good impression & explain why he or she deserves a lighter punishment,” acc/to the New York State Unified Court System.

When deciding what sentence to impose on a convicted in New York State, does the judge take into consideration the defendant’s contrition or lack thereof? Does anyone know?

Asking for no particular reason.

martinicat,
@martinicat@mastodon.social avatar

@JamesGleick yes. The judge relies on a pre-sentencing report which is prepared, during which the defendant is interviewed by The… I don’t know, probation department? anyway, yes, exactly that does come up.🍸😺

There is an absolute collapse of the legitimacy of the Supreme Court. Representative Jamie Raskin

My comments: Theocratic fascist judges make rulings with no basis in law. must be removed.

I’m just gonna say it — this “Genocide Joe” thing is the dumbest fucking liberal shit I have seen in years.

Joe Biden can do more to try to rein in Israel, but Biden doesn’t run Israel. He isn’t CIC for IDF. He isn’t deciding what hospital to bomb. He isn’t deciding what border crossings to close.

You know who is pushing the Genocide Joe narrative? The fucking Russians and the Israelis. Why is that? Well, it’s an election year, and Trump is a hard right, pro-Israel puppet.

“We see you haven’t voted yet. Your voting record is public,” a recent mailer to Texas Republicans says. “Your neighbors are watching and will know if you miss this critical runoff election. We will notify President Trump if you don’t vote. You can’t afford to have that on your record.”

The thing about a "strong" "leader"? Eventually you'll be the one targeted when things get desperate enough. No matter how much you think you are the kind of person who wouldn't be.

Senator Durbin has a responsibility to use every ounce of subpoena and investigative power he has to uncover just how compromised Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas are. For the sake of our democracy, Sen. Durbin’s continued inaction here isn’t an option and it’s time he heard that message loud and clear.

I can't believe I even have to say this, but it is not normal that the Supreme Court is taking its sweet time to decide if the president can incite an insurrection to overturn an election and maintain power. This should have been decided already. The answer is no!
