I've been kinda simmering over an interaction I had like 4-5 years ago. I said I'd like to see a mainline Legend Of Zelda game where you play as Zelda. I got jumped (figuratively) by a few guys who didn't see the point, it's always been Link, and they didn't want it.

So, me, significantly more insecure, trying to be friendly, discussed it with them and we got to a point where it'd be ok if there was at least a choice between Link and Zelda.

No.

These fucking babyass shriveldicks can cope for one damn game where they're not catered to. I don't want a choice. I want a game that Link is fucking dead. D-E-D, Dead. It's all up to Zelda. We've had to put up with lifetimes of male as default, taking in media that centers around men. I'm tired of the consolation prize of "Well, we'll add a gender selection for you". Why is it always (hyperbole for effect) male character, or a choice?

You can deal with one game that's not all about serving you.

"@.vampiress people always forget that on actual CRTs there's LOADS of effective subpixels with the phosphors, so the output of 320x200 is essentially a WAY higher resolution being smoothed with blending. Even better CRT pixel art generally takes into account how the phosphors cause this effect visually and use it to pack WAY more detail into low resolutions than is possible at the same resolution with square LCD pixels! It's crazy in 2024 upscale hardware still doesn't translate it properly"

I'm amused that people think DMs anywhere are private. Maybe it's because I've been an admin on forums and shit back in the day, but that just seemed like a given to me.

That's why, even when talking to family members I won't even name or gender my kid(s) online, even in DMs because anything that gets on the internet should be assumed to be public, and I value my kid(s)' privacy. Hell... my kids might not even exist... just like my cat. Maybe I'm salting my own presence online so only those who know me, actually know me.

The other day I made a comment about bringing score back to games since it was useful in helping motivate players. During the discussion I got the idea to try and play Super Mario Bros. for the score rather than trying to just clear levels.

The results were kinda surprising. I'm not a huge fan of SMB, but I enjoyed the game so much more AND did so much better. If something increased my score, I went for it.

I'm not very good at the game, but the constant block breaking and going for coins meant I kept finding secret coins, power ups, and getting extra lives. So, while I had many an embarrassing death, I had acquired more lives to help me forward.

Considering I don't remember the last time I played it, and I was never a huge fan, getting as far as I did without warping, and getting that score, is something I'm proud of and I had fun. I wanna try more Mario for score.

My programming style would be classified as Chaotic Evil.

No version control. Just comment out the old code so you can always see what the old version said.

Comment when I feel like it.

Spaghetti code with weird naming conventions.

I have a keyboard typing script that literally is just a series of if-statements checking which key was pressed.

The chaotic is all of the above.
The evil is the knowing what I'm doing is wrong.

Now, if I could only figure out why progress on my game is taking so long... 🤔​

Since I mention it so much and never show anything, I guess I'll toss two screenshots up from my testing today.

My game's moment to moment gameplay is like the old Sierra AGI games, but the overall structure is more like some kind of open ended haunted house simulator... like...

Imagine Police Quest 1... but instead of being a cop, you're a decent human being, and instead of some linear progression of events, you could go anywhere and explore whatever, and stuff happened around you... all tied to the date and time of real life.

The art on both screens is far from complete. The outside shot has an orange tint because it's actually late now. During the day it's bright, early morning is dark with a blueish tinge, and at night everything's dark and you need a flashlight to see.

I haven't incorporated the different time-dependent art for the bedroom yet.

Unsighted (their first game) was an absolutely amazing game. Like... I bought 3 copies, one of which was the full Limited Run collector's edition.

I could play Elder Scrolls Blades on my phone requiring an internet connection and interacting with lootbox crap, or I can use dosbox to just play Arena everywhere. In fact, with the customizable controls it actually almost plays better than on PC.

Magic Dosbox makes the whole setup really painless. Even have Daggerfall working.

So, I just got my Limited Run physical release of Doom Eternal (for Switch). It's my first time playing it and... something feels off.

I loved Doom 2016 from the get go but this one feels... The tone feels wrong?

I'm getting Doom 2 flashbacks. Yes, Eternal seems to basically be Doom 2 Redux, but I mean in terms of how I feel about it.

I've always preferred the first Doom over Doom 2. 2 did weird things with its level design that just sort of changed the tone of the whole thing. It felt more cartoony almost. Kind of sloppy.

I feel like Eternal is making the same "mistakes". I just put it in quotes because it could very well be just a personal preference thing. I haven't gotten far enough in this to be able to really pick apart the mechanics and crap.

I feel like Dead Cells really captures the transfem experience.

There's female outfits in the game, but you've got to fight your way through hell to get to the boss... that then drops the blueprint for the outfit... that you then have to grind and spend cells on to unlock.

The shit a girl's gotta do to get some boobs...

This morning Mr 16 was talking about the 'Capcom Sound Team' (cause he's playing Devil May Cry 1 at the moment)

This quickly led to me talking about the Megaman NES soundtrack.

And lo and behold, I notice that In Flames did a chiptunes release of their "I, The Mask" album so now I'm listening to that.
