The thing I hate about evacuation plans is that they always assume you'll be leaving in a motor vehicle. Sure, there are places where that might be a more or less valid assumption; but in many areas, a substantial percentage of the population doesn't have access to a car. I'd be evacuating on a bike because that's the transportation I have.

This was a fun one, so let's do it again. What is something you've learned that seems unlikely, even though you know it's true? Here's one I think about a lot:

Sight, while being something something many people are born with, is not an innate ability, but something we learn to do. People who were born blind or were blind for a long time, who get sight, have to learn to see.

That radially symmetrical animals (for example, starfish) start life as bilaterally symmetrical larvae. Then they undergo a transition, during which the right half of the body is resorbed, and the left half develops into the adult form with radial symmetry.

Hey #SFBA folks, a quick request… I’m starting to look at housing in the city #SF, and if you have any leads (even if it’s an “I love my neighborhood because…” type of comment) that would be great. 🥰

I don’t need a roommate, but I do need a place that accepts cats and has in unit laundry (which apparently is a very limiting factor). Not sure where to start my search other than the usual online portals.

EverydayMoggie,
@EverydayMoggie@sfba.social avatar

In-unit laundry is going to be a really hard barrier. Few places have that; those that do are typically expensive, even for here. You might have to resort to a portable washer that you connect to the sink, and improvised clotheslines. That's what I did in the last place I lived. Not all buildings will allow you to have your own washer though.

In my current building I have to use a shared laundry room. But since I have a sensitivity to scents and detergents, this means being the first person in there when it opens, running an extra cycle to clean the washer before my laundry goes in, and not using the dryers at all. You may be forced to make compromises like that if you aren't rich.

I do like the building I live in now, and the area is very convenient and walkable. Since it's a large building there are usually a few vacancies. There are a few units with washing machines but so far as I know, all of those are 3-bedroom apartments.

How much alone time vs socializing do you need?

For me there are a few people who are usually equalizing, and I can just be around them, so I won't count that. But generally, I find about 3 times a week, I'm game for socializing. A day in between to rest is usually nice, but the larger the gathering or if we go somewhere particularly noisy or I'm meeting new people that involves more effort, and my social battery empties sooner. I'm very curious where everyone else falls on this!

EverydayMoggie,
@EverydayMoggie@sfba.social avatar

I could quite happily go for the rest of my life without seeing another person. I like talking to people through text, but not face to face. The extraneous noise of all the non-verbal stuff makes it hard to parse what's happening and is stressful.

Even with people I like, I'm done after about half an hour, unless we're doing something else so that socializing isn't the primary focus.

Anniversary blog post from May 25, 2011: Whenever I hear people claim that Uber and Lyft "destroyed" New York City's taxi system, my mind boggles at how completely ignorant or how deep in denial they must be. This post was part of a series where I described how fantastically shitty the taxi system was in 2011:

One of Uber's explicitly stated goals was to destroy public transit so they could make everyone use their service.

Where I live taxis seem pretty good; they have their own app. I don't have occasion to use taxis often, but I'll definitely oppose anything that weakens public transit.

I just really hope Apple is preparing a metric hectare of reassurances if (big if!) they’re about to announce a deep partnership with OpenAI.

Like, reassurances about the environmental impact (all that work down the drain?), about the training data sources, about general ethics, about the cringy move-fast-and-break-things startup-bro vibes that they will then inherit onto their brand, etc…

EverydayMoggie,

On the 277th Berkeley South Asian Radical History Walking Tour (https://www.BerkeleySouthAsian.org/) last weekend, we visited the UC Berkeley Palestine encampment.

Halfway through a story about Indian student protestors in 1975, we stopped to point out the Palestine encampment behind us, and then welcomed our special guests: three students and faculty members active around the encampment. (1/4)

Yeah, there are definitely some things that will have to be overcome. I imagine it's possible to extend the plumbing. Maybe the interior of the building could contain things like laundry rooms and storage lockers (apartment buildings always need more storage), or even bike parking, or on-site exercise facilities.

It is very weird to think that actuaries might be the ones to shake our large institutions out of their complacency on climate change.

"The people who control the world's money rely on financial risk assessors to give them accurate data about future scenarios that could adversely affect their vast portfolios. The message coming from those risk assessors right now is...your money is in grave danger if the world does not act urgently to mitigate the worst consequences of our rapidly warming climate. Now a new report sets the challenge out in painful detail."

Victoria: Hundreds of patients died after catching COVID in Victorian hospitals, new data shows

Almost 1 in 10 patients who caught COVID in hospital died.

Documents obtained by ABC News under Freedom of Information laws reveal at least 6,212 patients caught COVID in hospital in 24 months — 3,890 in 2022 and 2,322 in 2023. Of those, 586 died — almost 6 per week, on average — with men dying at a higher rate than women (11 per cent vs 8 per cent).

Feeling miserable because of allergies.

I was not always suffering from those issues as I grew up on a farm and used to help with the hay work in the summer.

So the fact that I am now experiencing hayfever symptoms is the consequence of #ClimateChange.

Despite taking a powerful allergy medicine it is still not safe to go outside for me.

This is why when we talk to you so often about the #climate on this account, it is not because we are being greenwashed.

It is because it is affecting my health and our #gardens in a significant way.

It is also why those who would like to deny the climate issues are very unwelcome on this community, I could not give less of a damn about their opinions.

The slow collapse of downtown commercial real estate is continuing. I suspect news like this, and stories about the decline of retail around downtowns that depend on daily commuter traffic will come in at faster and faster rates.

Workers are not returning to the office to work. and are showing to be a perfectly viable solution that is more friendly to workers. Even with hybrid work, the volume of people commuting is far lower than it used to be.

is slowly declining to a new, lower-value equilibrium.

drahardja, to ai
@drahardja@sfba.social avatar

I’m more certain than ever that the first quarter of 2024 will see a grand reckoning for companies that have bet big on #AI. As I said before, I predict a lot of CFOs getting sticker shock at their compute bills, and we will see pivots and downscaling of expectations across the industry. By the middle of the year, there will likely be a general cool-down as users and investors come to grips with what “AI” can realistically do at reasonable cost (hint: not as much as the hype claims). Strategically deploying smaller models will become quite attractive, rather than monolithic solutions.

I also think 2024 is the year of the legal reckoning for the industry. Creators whose work have been used for training (i.e. plagiarized) will likely make big inroads into establishing legal frameworks for compensation, and some models will become poisoned because they were trained with unvetted data. Hopefully this also means that model-makers who have been meticulous about their training data’s providence will reap rewards.

EverydayMoggie,
@EverydayMoggie@sfba.social avatar

I'm a little bit confused as to why this surprises anyone. It's always had the hallmarks of a hype bubble.

Every hashtag on every post on every platform should ALWAYS be pascal case (a.k.a. camel case). I made this to illustrate how screenreaders read hashtags depending on whether they are lowercase or pascal case.

It’s a small thing that all of us can do to build a more inclusive, accessible internet for all. Please take the time to use pascal case.
