Ever feel like you are surrounded?! #shetland #horse #Shetlandpony #Scotland

CatherineMunro,

@amyfou they definitely would! Most ponies losing their winter coat and love to be scratched!

CatherineMunro, to Weather

I love walking by the sea when the air is filled with spindrift and the sound of crashing waves.
Tonight wind surrounds the house, howling as it circles. Walls shake, air flows through door and windows frames, making divisions between inside and outside feel uncertain, in motion. #Shetland #wave #storm #stormy #weather #wind

Horses in morning mist

During the round up, shepherds spend the week gathering sheep from the mountains. On the final day the whole flock is driven to the place they will be sorted and returned to their farms.
On the morning of the final day we awoke to thick mist but as the sun rose, it began to lift. The merging of sunrise and mist infused the world with a magical glow.

Icelandic horse at sunrise.

I am just back from #Iceland
I was in the hills to participate in the sheep round up and most of the time was without electricity or phone signal. Now that I'm home I have started starting looking through photos. Unsurprisingly most are of horses and sheep!

I have some signed copies of my book, Ponies At the Edge of the World, available on Ko-Fi
Each comes with a set of postcards.

Ponies tells the story of Shetland ponies & the people who love them. Based on my PhD research, and journey to live in Shetland, it reflects on how our relationship with others, human, animal and landscape, affect how we feel at home in a place

I love walking at sunset, the shifting colours in the sky telling stories of light and air.
As I sat in the hill writing, this yowe and her lamb came to join me. There is such a sense of peace and renewal in these moments

CatherineMunro, to folklore

Sheep in the cotton grass.

In #Shetland, bog cotton is known as Lucky Minnie's Oo (wool). A witch from Shetland folklore, Lucky Minnie was said to roam the hills in summer collecting this plant. She then processed it on a card from the fairies and used to #knit her clothes

This mirrors the practice at the time where folk without #sheep
would search the landscape for small pieces of #wool cought in fences or in the heather. If they gathered enough they could make a little knitwear

Hello
I am Catherine a writer living in #Shetland.
My first book is #naturewriting and tells the story of Shetland ponies and the people who love them. I am slowly starting #writing my second book and working on some short pieces.
I did an #anthropology PhD on Shetland ponies, #landscape and #identity and I mostly write about #nature #horses and how we feel at home in a place.
