Last week's #Parkrun was in Norway, this week I'm in Norfolk. Or possibly Suffolk. The town of Harleston is in Norfolk, but Harleston Magpies hockey club, where the parkrun takes place is the other side of the river in Suffolk. Where it may be, it's a friendly little run, three twisty laps on the hockey club fields, then tea and coffee for a donation in the clubhouse after. My 228th Parkrun at my 52nd location.

The Enhanced Games - Olympics, but with actual permitted drugs - sounds like it should be an April Fool’s story but isn’t. Marina Hyde brings her usually excoriating wit to the proceedings.

However it reminds me of a story from the Red Dwarf novels, where a similar sport was introduced for genetically engineered lifeforms, with extreme deviancy designed specifically for sporting purposes. 1/2

I recall the line about how in the World Cup, Scotland (and I think I quote more or less accurately here) “fielded a goalkeeper who was a huge oblong of flesh, eight feet by sixteen feet, thereby filling the entire goalmouth. Somehow they still failed to qualify for the second round.”

Such things may yet come to pass.

The Apprentice Boys of Derry are marching in Inverness in a couple of weeks, and there’s a petition doing the rounds to stop them. An Orange march in Stonehaven was stopped recently, so perhaps this can too. Please sign and share. https://chng.it/qHZ4Hb9vRL

@nr @timrichards yeah they are a scourge of Glasgow. Fostered by (and in turn fosters) the Rangers-Celtic rivalry. Thankfully rare outside the Glasgow area as Nikita says, and all the more shocking for them being so out of place. Not that Glasgow should have to tolerate them of course.

simonvarwell,
@simonvarwell@mastodon.scot avatar

@pauloldhamsnp no grounds at all? Fear of violence was a reason in Stonehaven was it not?

simonvarwell,
@simonvarwell@mastodon.scot avatar

@withaveeay @pauloldhamsnp not yet indeed. I hope there are no provocations. In the meantime I’d hope E&D laws would prevent these from happening but perhaps that’s optimism.

Three public inquiries are currently showing us failures of the British state

In dong so the inquiries are doing what parliament should have been able to do

By me, at Prospect Magazine

https://www.prospectmagazine.co.uk/politics/65694/public-inquiries-show-the-state-is-failing-david-allen-green

But in each, the same problems recur. There is alack of useful communication within the public bodies concerned. There is little or no meaningful accountability for those who have made bad decisions. There is reluctance or outright opposition to the inquiry being given relevant materials by officials. And perhaps most strikingly of all, there is the realisation that what parliament, the media and the public—and indeed ministers—were told at the time was very different to what was actually happening. It almost feels as if, like in a pulp detective novel, we are being told in a final chapter about what was really occurring while we were being misled and misdirected. The implication of this delayed accountability is that the “real-time” forms of accountability are useless. It is not simply that Westminster and Whitehall fail to be efficient; they fail even to be efficacious. Ministerial question times are theatre, if not pantomime. Select committee hearings are just for show. Ministers are often as uninformed as those who are questioning them. It does not have to be this way. Almost none of the information that is now coming to light in these three inquiries needed to be held back for these subsequent formal proceedings.

@davidallengreen very well put. Parliamentary scrutiny is terrifyingly absent at the moment.

The thread about the Rule of the Strap; the origins and demise of the peculiar corporal punishment in Scottish education

On April 2nd 1982, Lothian Region Council implemented a ban on corporal punishment in its schools, making it the first Scottish authority to do so and at odds with many others. In Scotland, corporal punishment in schools almost universally meant hitting the upturned palms of children with an official instrument that was officially known as the tawse.…

A long time ago on a social media platform far, far away (well, October 2020 on Twitter) I began a chronological watch-through of the Star Wars canon. I am barely on Birdville now, so have moved the thread here.

Below is a link to a pdf with a very crude copy & paste job of my entire thread so far, so you can go back to the beginning and read the whole story. I will pick up the thread again below this tweet.

Happy reading, and may the force live long and shiny.

Another dark episode in number 11, with Omega’s capture. It’s all rather predictably set up for her to engineer an escape from the project, but we still have only five episodes for it all to be wrapped up and written out. I’m quite looking forward to getting past it all and moving on to the next things in the canon.
