little productivity thing for linux that i would like: terminal integration of the XDG (?) "Recent" folder. make it an actual Folder ~/Recent with links to the files, or a FUSE fs. i often have to integrate console and desktop tools and this would make it less painful.

@mntmn not exactly, that's true. but it is, in the sense that all the text on screen is somehow interactive (and modifiable).

Daily reminder that most Linux distros are badly equipped to manage dependencies of Rust/Go and similar statically linked languages. For example, Alpine build scripts just invoke the package manager of these languages. Therefore, Alpine is entirely unaware of the vendored dependencies. This has security implications, e.g. to fix the SSH Terrapin issue it's difficult to even identify packages vendoring vulnerable SSH library versions.

Is there a good fix for this?

6d03,
@6d03@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@nmeum was it maybe a bad idea to turn build tools into package managers?

I suspect that the introduction of moveable type to Germany greatly contributed to both witchcraft panics and anti-Jewish pogroms.

Even before the first actual, regular newspaper was published in 1604, Germany was rife with "news sheets" that printed all sorts of lurid and fantastical tales in order to increase sales. Think of modern-day tabloids or FOX News at their worst. And all those tales must be true, or else they wouldn't have been printed, right?

Some of the tales are rather amusing (like the Sankt Andreasberg cat that gave birth to 300 kittens and a goat in a single night while under the influence of a comet). But then there's a tale of a Jew who supposedly tried to "torture" blessed altar bread and, when he could not destroy it "with fire or water", he tried to "bake it into a cake". And then the dough became red, and he beheld a vision of Baby Jesus within the oven...

Such tales took on lives of their own, and helped keep all sorts of bigotries alive. Just like modern-day social media do...

(By the way, if anyone can give me some recommendations for scholarly works on the early era of mass printing, I am all ears - so far, I've mainly picked up individual anecdotes.) #printing #witchcraft #antisemitism #history

I think it is so interesting that whenever anyone criticises ACM, someone comes out of the woodwork to say "ACM is a democracy of its membership, if you want to change it, vote or join a committee!"

We already tried that. Some of our very best researchers already serve on these committees and are doing their best to solve these problems, but there has been literally no change and no indication that changes are likely on many important issues (I recognise that some things have improved). If you are doubtful, ask yourself whether ACM is still farming out your papers' typesetting to expensive and incompetent firms that replace your (somewhat) accessible vector-art mathematical figures with blurry screenshots in raster format...

If there were any way to resolve this through ACM's democracy, that would have happened already. I have too much respect for the community members serving on the pertinent committees to conclude otherwise...

What is really happening is that people with legitimate complaints are being told to "feed the beast" — there is no better way to put someone out of action is to get them stuffed into a committee somewhere.

Tire dust makes up the majority of ocean microplastics and hangs as an invisible mist wherever cars are driven. A traditional petrol / diesel car's four tires will pollute 1 trillion toxic nano particles for every kilometer driven. There are about 1.4 billion cars in the world. Let’s assume they drive and average 20,000 km per year. That means that every year some 28 septillion of these toxic particles pollute air, soil and water. That’s 28,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000.
