@jon Scholz the other day said something along the lines of not accepting that a Trump win was a forgone conclusion. Fine. But what if?
Could Europe compensate in terms of military capacity? Nuclear sharing aside, I think to a large extent yes, though not immediately. Western economic capacity even without the US after all still overmatches Russia several times.
Procurement, strategy and action all become much harder in the absence of a clear leader. And I don't think any one European country is capable or would be accepted in such a role.
Another solution would be to centralise those functions, but I can currently only see that happening ad hoc and too late.
Trump still doesn't understand how NATO works, he still thinks allies "owe us money" and he's now sending a signal to Russia to attack them while the crowd cheers. This is an invitation to Putin to broaden the war.
