I see posts in my timeline saying “when will Germany’s politicians wake up to the threat of Trump?” (After his NATO statements)

Scholz: never awake to anything unless forced
Grüne: would do the right thing, but can’t always drive coalition forward on everything
FDP: will think about saving themselves first, won’t commit to spending anything
Merz: thinks he’s such a genius he could talk Trump around, can ignore people like Röttgen who are better

So Germany’s non-response is rather inevitable

6d03,
@6d03@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@alexproe @jon there is a scenario that @anderspuck mentioned in a recent video, where Putin directs aggression towards the West, just below the threshold that would trigger a joint response. take away the convening power of the US and it becomes quite conceivable for article 5 to fail.

@6d03@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@alexproe @jon the failure to deliver the promised amount of artillery ammunition is symptomatic: it's a question of calculating the required production capacity and necessary investment, and then doing it.

it was not done.

6d03,
@6d03@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@alexproe @jon if we can't scale up a well understood industrial process by a known factor, what can we do?

6d03,
@6d03@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@alexproe @jon well, for what it's worth, German minister of defence Boris Pistorius has been vocal and specific about the need to be prepared to deter Russia from invading NATOs eastern flank in 5 to 8 years.

this is supposedly the time Russia would need to rebuild capacity after a cease fire in Ukraine.

6d03,
@6d03@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@alexproe @jon this would seem to be a case of the prevention paradox

Bremen, Hamburg, Berlin, Saarland, Thüringen, Niedersachsen, Sachsen.

So dazwischen: Hessen, Brandenburg.

Great, Barnes & Nobles, you ask me to use a password that's 15 characters, force a security question ("In what city where you born" -- seriously?!) which also can only be 15 characters on me... but then say, I should supply a phone number for "security".

Also you just silently truncate the input if pasted from a password manager which makes for fun if it generates (and thus stores) a longer password :)

Oh, and no + signs in emails allowed.

On any given business day I’ll be handling 5-15 “things.” On Tuesday and Thursday at 9:00am there’s a meeting to prioritise them. They get put in order of urgency and/or importance, some get cancelled, another might get added. Fairly normal stuff.

Somewhere, somehow, a cloud function app that someone has built, has started in the last two weeks, sending me a nightly 10:00pm prioritisation list of tomorrow’s tasks via Teams. It’s wrong, because that’s not how this works, but it actually knows the tasks which it’s presumably pulled from JIRA. Nobody seems to know anything about it.

can one get any milage out of --- instead of thinking about a double category of functions and relations --- merely a category of relations, but where you have some extra data telling you which relations are special by dint of being functions or cofunctions? and like require a factorization system in which every relation morphism happens to factor as a cofunction followed by a function?

6d03,
@6d03@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@jcreed you can do something like that in order enriched categories:

there is a notion of adjunction for morphisms in order enriched cats, by virtue of them being 2-categories.

the category of sets and relations is order enriched, and the left adjoints in it are exactly the functions.
