Hi, I'm Beth. I'm a #queer #mathematician. I'm also a #webcomic and #musical theater enthusiast. I am #AroAce #Trans and #Enby.

If you're using #miraheze to host a wiki, please take a data dump now while you can — there's loads of other places you can host a MediaWiki install.. don't wait until it totally implodes!

183231bcb,

@theresnotime I was in the process of moving my wiki from #FandomWiki to #Miraheze when I heard the news. I made a request to import the data, and it's still "pending' and probably won't go through.

Where would you recommend moving?

Okay :
I am seriously considering switching to calckey.lgbt as my main instance.

Is there anything bad about the instance I should know before I hit the button? Something bad the admins have done? Conflict and uncertainty among the mods? Instances they didn't that they should have, or vice versa?

Given my recent experience trying to migrate to only for Miraheze to end up in turmoil, I figure it can't hurt to ask.

I think a genie should grant the wish of every "Return to Tradition" guy posting on the internet, and they should all awake tomorrow in the time-period of their choice, in the nation or city they romanticize most from the past.

question:
If I am viewing a post in my browser on its original site, what's the easiest way to open that post on my Calckey instance so I can reply?

For Mastodon I can just add "elk.zone/" to the beginning of the URL, or use one of the myriad of redirect browser extensions. Is there a Calckey equivalent? I think that's the last feature I need before fully switching over.

A lot of people in the political middle have misgivings with trans women outperforming in sports. It's a legitimate concern, but it is also:
(1) solvable with compassionate governance of events, and
(2) completely trivial because it is so incredibly rare.

Haley knows better. And she probably tells herself that this is the stuff she has to say to advance in her party today. It's despicable and ignorant.

I once leaned Republican, but have now sworn them off for life.

183231bcb,

@GregCirillo @pattykimura Which sports are trans women "outperforming" at? Are there any competitive sports where trans women hold more than 2% of world records? Or even any world records?

Apple refusing to call anything in #WWDC keynote "AI" and instead calling it all "ML" is warming my heart.

183231bcb,

@seldo When a computer program does something badly, it's called "AI."

When computer programs improve to the point where they can do that same task well, it stops being called "AI."

A few decades ago search engines, computer-designed chips, data compression, map software, and chess engines were all "AI" tasks that "can only be done well with real intelligence a computer will never have."

Nowadays those tasks are all "mindless computation" and "not real intelligence."

Since it’s almost June, this is your reminder to fuck rainbow capitalism and buy from queer-owned small biz who stock pride merch all year round. 🌈🦄🏳️‍🌈

183231bcb,

@ScribblingOn If you like comics, I recommend buying from #HiveworksComics which hosts lots of free-to-read queer webcomics and has a store of books and merchandise:
https://www.hiveworkscomics.com/

Or @quindriepress run by @evegwood which has a crowdfunder for an anthology comic going right now.

Hello fedi admins

In case you needed yet another reason to block newsie.social, and every other site that Jeff runs, newsie.social has now decided that platforming far-right hate is appropriate:

183231bcb,

@aurynn This is a request to instance admins to #fediblock newsie.social, because they are now hosting an account for far-right disinformation network #Newsmax @newsmax. I am adding a content-warning so that I can boost.

Is there a , preferably browser-based, so that, when I view a thread of replies, I can easily see which people I am already following and follow those I am not, WITHOUT having to leave the thread to load every commenter's full profile?

Currently, I go down a thread, click on each username, check if I already follow them, and if so, go back to the thread and refind my place. It's slow. Or I can ctrl+click each name to open in new tabs, which gets me rate-limited.

183231bcb,

The default web-based front-end for #calckey is already pretty close to what I am requesting (hovering your mouse over a username or avatar pops up a window from which you can follow/unfollow). So if I can't find a Mastodon client to do what I want it's a point in favor of switching away from Mastodon.

183231bcb,

It appears https://elk.zone #ElkZone does what I asked for. I think if I use Elk I would be okay sticking with Mastodon as long as I move to a server with a higher character limit.

183231bcb,

@redegelde I know. That's why I said I plan to move to an instance with a higher character limit.

I will say it again...

I do not recall an open letter with thousands of prominent signatories, a hastily-assembled White House Task Force and a big Senate hearing for automated driving systems.

You know... systems that are masquerading as that have killed people and have the capacity to readily cause immediate injury and death.

We have an unregulated Wild West out there on that.

No, no.

Let's sound the alarm over a goddamned chatbot.

183231bcb,

@adamjcook But Microsoft spent hundreds of millions of dollars to make a text generator that's worse than #DwarfFortress from 2006, so clearly that's more important than people dying in car crashes.

People in security and computing have been saying for years - there's no cloud. There's just someone else's computer.

Right now, there's no AI. There's just someone else's work.

Stop calling generative text and image programs AI. It's inaccurate and insulting. They are just the evolution of corporate creative theft that's been going on as long as media corporations have existed.

183231bcb,

So, if I play a game of #chess against #Stockfish , is it stealing moves from human chess players (none of whom would be able to beat Stockfish in a match)?

@ianrosewrites For that matter, if I play Dwarf Fortress Classic, who actually wrote the "generated" world?

The obvious distinction is that current generative AIs are a lot worse at producing "artistic" writing than good human writers, whereas Stockfish is much better than any human chess player.

There are many different sides to the "Dave Debate"

Should people named Dave exist? Should they have rights? Are they people at all?

I'm not anti-Dave, in fact I am a great supporter of Daves. I just think we need to ask some questions. But if you ask these questions people get so mad.

Shouldn't we at least have a sober reasonable discussion? What's wrong with that?

183231bcb,

@futurebird I used to support the DRA side. But then I proposed a moderate compromise in which all Daves get rights EXCEPT for Congressman David Schweikert of Arkansas.

The radical DRAs didn't like my moderate compromise and called me "Davephobic" (which is a slur BTW), so now I support incarcerating all Daves.

Just remember that the Dave-activists made me take this position.

    Great news for Linux gamers.

Steam will soon use the desktop portal file picker.

In practice, it means Steam will use your native desktop method for selecting and saving files, resulting in better user experience and desktop integration.

This is one of many things Flatpak and GNOME pioneered that improves the Linux desktop for everyone.

Seems like it mind be helpful in getting away from #Fandom . #mediawiki #IndependentWiki #FediverseProjects #ActivityPub
