If you're writing an "About" page, please say what your site/thing is actually about 🙏

So many About pages now are marketing-speak devoid of meaningful info. They'll say things like "ABOUT: We are all about commitment, passion and a sense of duty to our field.".... well, that's nice but it doesn't tell me what the f you do! 😱

One of the many great things about Wikipedia is it tells you what things actually are instead of trying to promote them. But if you're not on Wikipedia, then it is even more important that your About page says what you do.

When I’m stuck waiting for something, I like to browse random pages from #Wikivoyage. This set of phrases from the #Malayalam language escalates a bit quickly 😬

Hey there!

Does anyone know servers with really well-worded policies against bigotry?

I wonder what she thought about moving to a tower block? Was it an improvement at the time?

Arghh, sorry to people waiting for more @FediFollows, had a bit of a tiring couple of days due to real life stuff. Normal service will be resumed soon.

There's always a delay on FediFollows because I need to check with the accounts being listed, which takes time.

How bad does a company's behaviour have to be before we shun it on the Fediverse?

https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2021/dec/06/rohingya-sue-facebook-myanmar-genocide-us-uk-legal-action-social-media-violence

https://www.dw.com/en/us-fines-facebook-5-billion-for-privacy-violations/a-49730844

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-29475019

I cannot believe some people are still suggesting a "wait and see" on this.

Stunned to see people saying it is acceptable to collaborate with Meta. Can you not see the vast, planet-sized red flags here? The consistently sociopathic behaviour patterns since the company was founded?

Please, if you run a Fedi server suspend the domain threads.net 🙏

FediThing,

@qustrolabe

The Fediverse hasn't done anything like the things I linked to.

If there was a Fedi instance that did even a fraction of those things, it would have been defederated long ago.

If you “quickly checked out Threads” learn from the experience how important frictionless onboarding is (even if you hate Threads, you got to sign up for it and use and try it in seconds).

Signing up for Mastodon should be this easy (there has been a lot of progress lately!).

FediThing,

@thomasfuchs

Threads is centralised, that's inherently quicker to sign up on but inherently more dangerous for the user.

FediThing,

@thomasfuchs

I mean... with a centralised system there is never going to be a step where you choose a server.

With decentralised systems there's always going to be server choice in some way or other. It's always going to be an additional step or option.

If someone joins a platform because they can sign up in seconds, they are going to end up paying for it over the years with a network that suffers from bad governance. We've seen the horrible stuff Facebook has done.

It's like microwaveable meals are inherently quicker to prepare than fresh food, but they carry a significant health cost in the long run.

FediThing,

@thomasfuchs

I just think we shouldn't be prioritising speed of sign-up over good governance and user empowerment.

FediThing,

@thomasfuchs

That's a flaw though? If you make the largest server the default, you are centralising the network, raising risk of bad governance.

FediThing, (edited )

@thomasfuchs

Growing through centralisation means you lose the entire network, possibly forever. The kind of growth you get from centralisation is unsustainable and leads to really toxic governance, as we've seen with Twitter, Reddit, Meta etc.

It is totally okay to have a lower growth rate if it is more sustainable in the long run. Deccentralised growth is more sustainable, that's why the Fediverse exists as an alternative.

The mildest possible protest over a major government failure, spreading confetti at a sporting event:

The reaction from the UK gov:

Meanwhile, same UK gov to cancel pledge to help developing countries cope with climate change:

Is it possible to unfederate a Fediverse instance or software if a high percentage of the federated members decide to do so?

#Fediverse #threads #meta #Mastodon

FediThing,

@harriorrihar

Each instance decides for itself whether to federate with another instance. As more instances defederate from an instance, that instance's access to the Fediverse decreases.

Eagerly awaiting the first novel that started out as a thread but got out of control.

(Apparently the famous 1700s novel "Pamela" originally started out as examples of how to write a letter, so I guess there is precedent for accidentally doing this.)

I'm still figuring out what to do about the meta threads coming in a few days. Reading and thinking more about it, I'm leaning more and more to signing the fedipact and committing to blocking or limiting meta servers.

I'm concerned about privacy issues, monetization of our community, "embrace and extend" issues, having to deal with corporate policing of our content, and potentially harassment from an influx of users.

I'm curious what people here think. Is there a reason I should hold off the decision or even go the other way?

FediThing,

@lili

Considering Meta's appalling track record on privacy, human rights etc, I think the default should be to block it. You can always unblock later if you change your mind.

@ummjackson@mastodon.social avatar

Defederating from a big company like Meta adopting ActivityPub is really kinda backwards and petty. Hoping .social doesn’t consider this.

FediThing,

@ummjackson

Meta is not to be trusted, their track record is appalling.

Meta wouldn't adopt ActivityPub if they thought it would genuinely open up social media. Presumably their setup is banking on one-way traffic (twitter -> fediverse -> meta).

Top topic at bluesky today seems to be how much Mastodon sucks 😂

Meanwhile, at Mastodon, how much bluesky sucks is barely cracking the top 20 😂

FediThing,

@CodexArcanum @poiseunderchaos @etherdiver

It has been quite difficult to get some new people to understand the idea of a "small web" where a well-running community is a success.

There seems to be an obsession with numerical growth in some people, to the extent that it must come at the cost of all other considerations including sustainability.

I don't know if it is an American thing, but it feels like a lot of Americans do seem to be like this.

I did a post about it at https://tech.lgbt/@FediThing/110349930342025093

FediThing,

@CodexArcanum @poiseunderchaos @etherdiver

Yeah, it’s weird! It’s not like there’s any religion or tradition where there must be meat at every meal (probably because until very recently only very rich people could afford meat at every meal).
