The only Mission Impossible movie I've seen is the first one.

Every time another comes out I think, "Really, another? I guess I should catch up."

However, I have watched the first many times. Does that count?

Hey #NLP—we all know better than to use NLP tools that we can't assess, right? These folks are advertising on the #acl2023nlp Rocket.chat, but give 0 info about how their system was built or evaluated.

The link for http://generalizable.xyz goes to a page that literally just consists of their logo.

In what sense is this GPT? What training data did they use? What test data? What evaluation metric?

But more to the pt: We're here to learn from each other, not to read synthetic versions of papers.

"It allows users to ask questions, explore sections, and request summaries, making academic research more accessible and digestible. Ideal for researchers, students, or anyone seeking to quickly understand complex papers."

Summaries, accessibility, these imply fairly transparent veracity. Things we know are not possible right now.

And what kind of understanding would be based on these?

Here it is: A comprehensive look at NSItemProvider: what it does, how it works, and how to use it properly. I want this to be a one-stop-shop reference for anyone using this class in their projects.

NSItemProvider is a key class in iOS and Mac Catalyst, used in everything from Drag and Drop, to Pasteboard, share sheet, and beyond. Understanding how this class works will help you make better apps and gain insight into what the system does for you.

Please read the post, and send me feedback. Share it with your iOS developer friends. Let me know what you think!

By today’s Trumpian standards he seems mild. Even Obama praised him. Along with Lincoln, Republicans trot Ronald Reagan out every time Democrats praise their greats: Obama, LBJ, Kennedy, FDR or Truman.

Republicans regularly rate him their greatest after Lincoln.

In reality, the “great communicator,“ as he was called, was an impenetrable facade of congeniality who was hostile to civil rights.

Pretty sure we could substitute women, BIPOC, or people with disabilities.

Something big is shifting here.

  1. Erdogan backs Ukraine's NATO membership

  2. Erdogan pisses off Putin by returning Mariupol commanders to Ukraine.

My gut tells me that after the Wagner mutiny Erdogan sees Putin as weaker. I suspect he also sees a future where a dominant Turkey with a close NATO ally in Ukraine thoroughly controls the Black Sea region.

If that's right, I wonder what else might shift.

Spicy take:

There's no simple fix to socially debilitating rampant drug use and overdose.

Criminalization doesn't work and causes a lot of harm.

Decriminalization isn't exactly working either.

There is no way to force addicts to genuinely participate in their own rehab.

And non-addicts should not have to accept whatever kind of life addicts foist upon them.

That's called codependency.

Don't accept simple answers.

@kaffiene

I mostly agree? I think there's more too though. Some people with severe addictions are not interested in rehab at all. That's just an unfortunate fact and there's no ethical method for forcing them to change their minds. What's more, this isn't a new problem. It's as old as human addiction.

But should rehab services be fully funded? Absolutely. There's no ethical alternative.

I just don't like simple answers.

Notice how "This airline screwed me" posts just don't fly on Mastodon? Yes, accidental, silly pun but there is something about this place that bitching just don't work as well. I think this is good? Yet there are things to be done in this world so I still want information, insights, and paths to action. Just saying the "OMG factor" seems dialed down.

johnwehrle,

@pilirin @scottjenson @thomasfuchs @Jbasoo

Since we're talking about shaming more than QTs, I can't quite agree with the "Don't do the crime if you can't handle the time" attitude.

Because what groups shame people for is not necessarily stuff they should be shamed for. For example, sex positivity is a reaction to slut shaming, body positivity is a reaction to body shaming, etc.

This is independent of social media and QTs.

johnwehrle,

@pilirin @scottjenson @thomasfuchs @Jbasoo

The topic of shaming is interesting in a morbid kind of way.

It is a social tool for coercing a social being to punish themselves emotionally.

Now, sometimes that punishment is apt. No question. But not always and I would argue, usually not. Because in most cases it takes a critical mass of a peer group for the coercion to work. And that usually means the dominant subgroups shame most effectively. I.e, punching down, not up.

johnwehrle,

@pilirin @scottjenson @thomasfuchs @Jbasoo

But, you know, also, sometimes those who should be ashamed are rightfully shamed.

This is an important PSA for folks looking to make any place more inclusive. Do you want to be liked by everyone? Or do you want to make progress?

I don't know anyone that has both been successful in transforming a non-inclusive place, and hasn't been accused of sounding hostile.

It takes a huge amount of energy to dance on eggshells, and I don't have time to do it. So I don't. I'm a big boy. I crack sidewalks when I walk. So eggshells would have no chance anyway. 🤷🏿‍♂️

One dreadful effect of #Dementia is the possibility of extremely foul language and racist slurs. Of course there are a myriad of other nasty phrases, threats and delusions going on. Tough to care for your sweet family member who is having these episodes. Worse when 2 caregivers are young Black men. Thing is, we can’t stop it. None of this was ever part of his life or personality. His brain is broken and there are no filters during these episodes.

johnwehrle,

@cobalt

So sorry to hear this.

That crap is just part of this broken society. Put any of our brains in that state and spew out similar stuff.

I had a great uncle who suffered some relatively minor brain injuries from a work accident and he could sometimes say terrible things and then some minutes later he'd be himself again and apologize. It was heartbreaking.

johnwehrle, to random

Fellow white people, please read this and remember that every person is an actual, individual person.

Also, listen and boost more than you talk about racism.

I also feel uncomfortable with the term 'virtue signaling' because it seems like everyone who isn't a sociopath qualifies as virtue signaling. So I'm glad to have the term 'moral grandstanding' instead. Fits much better.

BTW, how is being an ally different from just being a decent person?

Hey fellow developers! Do you have a preferred term of art for software that:

• has captive users
• is designed primarily for the org’s needs
• can frustrating as long as it works

…versus a term for software that:

• people can choose not to use
• must not be frustrating
• requires user-centered design

There are plenty of terms like “enterprise software” and “consumer software” that come close, but say too much (specifying who users are, biz model, etc). Any terms that capture just the above?

johnwehrle,

@inthehands "software tools"? It doesn't fit the prevailing pattern but what you describe sounds more like any other tool that org members have to use.

"40 Acres and a Mule" symbolizes the enduring struggle of Black Americans. This phrase originated in the Civil War era when the U.S. government initiated a land redistribution program to aid newly freed Black Americans, only to have it foiled by Southern powerbrokers & racists as well as clueless administrators. It reveals the challenges faced by Black folks in the ongoing pursuit of equality & justice.
