So, this morning, after years and years of using the GUI in Linux, I gave up. The state of the GUI does nothing but deteriorate over time for accessibility, and it's exhausting. It's only getting worse. We're far, far away from what it used to be, years ago. Certainly, the QT framework has improved since 5 and now 6 came out, but GTK? Oh dear, oh dear... So, let's dive into it. #linux#xorg#wayland#a11y#accessibility#blind
Wayland. It comes up a lot: “Bug X fixed in the Plasma Wayland session.” “The Plasma Wayland session has now gained support for feature Y.” And it’s in the news quite …
Here is my new GNU/Linux distribution guide about Debian KDE 12, the right GNU/Linux distribution for professional digital painting in 2024! Also about three major problems with GNU/Linux distros that will drive away all professional artists, IMO, and how I got kicked out of the Fedora KDE ecosystem with F40, which imposed Plasma6 and Wayland. I hope it helps other artists here!
Whenever I see comments like this about #Wayland I always have to ask, who do you think would be developing this new protocol? Every single #Linux graphics developers agrees that Wayland is where we're going, the problem is nobody agrees on how it should look
So @gnome is removing the x11 session, leaving just the Wayland one.
If this goes out before Orca, the GNOME screen reader, is fixed to work on Wayland, it will mean that people who rely on screen readers will have no way to use one on GNOME. And thus on the major Linux distributions.
So I’m hoping the plan is that this change will not land until GNOME has a working screen reader.
#FreeBSD folks I have an issue and I think I need to either change permissions or add my user to a group ? I have installed the following #Wayland#WM Sway, River and to see if it works Hyprland. I can run Sway no problem as my user justine but both River and Hyprland refuse as my user but I am able to run them up as root which I know is very wrong. So how do I fix this as cannot see anything in the FreeBSD manual ??
It seems X11 is really coming to a crossroads and turning into maintenance-mode software.
At this point, it runs fine even on my 12th-Gen intel machine, but if I ever get newer hardware (not anytime soon, obvs.), I might need to make the switch. :/
I am once again considering to write my own window manager
...unless the setup I am thinking of is already possible, let me construct this in your head:
On the top of the screen, there is narrow status bar, which is split into two parts. On the right side of the bar, you have your clock, your battery, your signal strength and so on.
On the left side, there is a clickable tab for every window you have opened. It's like browser tabs: Every window always uses the entire space below the status bar.
On the far left, there could be an icon which opens a searchable list of applications, kind of like #dmenu but vertical. Everything supports mouse input as you would expect.
Does that exist? Should I make it? It would be awesome for smaller screens, like phones.
Edit: I should add that I'm planning to run it on a Nokia N900 with a single 600 MHz CPU core, 256 MB RAM and a resolution of 800×480 pixels. Existing full desktop environments like Xfce4, LXDE, and so on are way to heavy to run.
So, I say I use #Wayland all the time, and that X11 is dead, or dying.
And while the second part of that statement is a fact, it doesn’t mean Wayland is ready for everyone right now, so I decided to take a look at the current state of Wayland support, between desktops, apps, drivers, and what the protocol still doesn’t support:
For #GNOME app folks: IMHO we need to think about what to do with Totem / Gnome Videos. It has not yet been ported to #gtk4, which is increasingly becoming an issue.
Apart from not fitting nicely UI wise, it prevents us from using the newly introduced #wayland hardware offloading (zero-copy playback) and, crucially, from (properly) supporting HDR content going forward.
I.e. we either need a port - or should consider making an alternative a core app to focus on.
Should I distro hop my work (!) machine to #OpenSUSE Tumbleweed (and fight with its lack of polkit setup and "hurr durr durr just use the root password" attitude),
-- or --
Should I make a fair attempt at troubleshooting the problems I'm having with #EndeavourOS?
My login (selecting Plasma Wayland session) dumps me into an Xorg screen with 3 xterms. I then have to 'sudo systemctl restart sddm' and log in again...etc..
I'm going back to Xorg. At least until there's a Window Manager/Portal combination that works well enough for my use case. #Hyperland is close, but close isn't close enough for a production system.
I'm curious how many of you actually use a screensaver (not a lock screen) on #Linux, the screensaver fans are very loud about them but surely there isn't that many of them #Wayland#Xorg#Opensource
The patched version of #Mutter + #GNOME Shell I've been running for the last few days, while profiling with @YaLTeR, is crazy fast.
This is the first time in 13 years that my GNOME Shell isn't slowing down after a few hours/days. Even without triple-buffering.
It is so smooth, I can't stop moving windows around just to savor how unreal it feels. Turns out I never experienced 60 fps (with & without #Wayland) in GNOME in my life, until this week.
"GNOME Wayland sucks because I have to decorate my own windows which is out of the scope for my project."
Just... Don't? :confused_dog: If GNOME doesn't want to have a fallback for server-side decorations, then the intended functionality of the desktop is to just not have window decorations for your app. If people open bug reports about it, close them and direct them to the GNOME issue tracker. I don't get why this is considered a stopper for so many developers targeting Wayland. Just don't have them, I don't get it. :neocat_what:
In this week's #Linux and #OpenSOurce News video, we have the Linux Kernel 6.4, coming with big improvements to AMD power management and performance and Apple M2 support, we have news about the #FOSS driver for #NVIDIA GPUs, and we have some dev work to make gaming on #Wayland better on GNOME:
I'm not a fan of #windows but I am jealous of its ability to run #android apps. I'm surprised #linux doesn't have a compatibility layer similar to #wsl (at least that I know of).
All I know for now is #anbox which seems to be abandoned (?) and Waydroid which I can't use yet becuase #wayland just doesn't work for me. Any ideas?
So let’s talk about this Wayland thing (pointieststick.com)
