@delegatevoid@mastodon.gamedev.place

I'm a C#/.NET developer living on Ubuntu Linux.
I don't use Windows and certainly no Apple products. I build and deploy solutions for and on MCU's, SoC's, Desktops, Servers, Mobiles, etc....

For my job I spend nearly all my time inside VSCode, Godot, Blender, KdeNLive, etc...

I am not a game developer

@aeva you mean except the ones in different timezones?

@aeva what? I must have missed something.

Any UI/UX designers here who use https://penpot.app/. What are you thoughts on it?

https://app.diagrams.net/
This is like the best thing since #visio way back in the day.

I'm not sure if there's even a better alternative.

(For some reason I still know it as draw.io though)

delegatevoid,
@delegatevoid@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@AngryAnt I'll take a look, thnx!

delegatevoid,
@delegatevoid@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@AngryAnt By the way, diagrams.net is available as an offline application for Linux, Windows and MacOS. I always use the offline version but sometimes I need customers to quickly draw something for me and then I give them the online link.

While developing firmware I really love to use terminal applications to debug the firmware/hardware.
As a developer I get access to this amazing library: Spectre.Console https://spectreconsole.net/
It takes care of almost everything you could possibly want of a console app

delegatevoid,
@delegatevoid@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@AngryAnt I've used Terminal.Gui as well. Also very nice. It's more difficult to use but even more powerful if you want to build full-blown applications. Terminal.Gui is of the many gifts its author has given the open source community.

Am I the only one who thinks is just one giant mess in which almost everything gets lost in the noise. How did we come to this situation where everyone relies on this single, centralized chat service?

delegatevoid,
@delegatevoid@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@AngryAnt yes, like .chat or even , but more and more open source projects, including rely on which is not accessible for a very very large part of the human population....

delegatevoid,
@delegatevoid@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@AngryAnt it's frustrating :D

@AngryAnt Can't get on Matrix here, blocked by DPI.

delegatevoid,
@delegatevoid@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@AngryAnt Deep Packet Inspection, as soon as it looks like a certain protocol it gets blocked.
Sometimes you can get lucky, it'll work for 20 minutes and then... finished. Right now the only thing that works consistently is delta, since it just uses imap/smtp which is not something anyone wants to block if they want to remain economically relevant.

What's a good #music app to replace #rhythmbox on #ubuntu that fits right in with #gnome ?

@delegatevoid@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@Migueldeicaza Can I ask you something?
Last we spoke, I was still a teenager and you were at Ximian supporting #gnome. You then went to #microsoft and now you've ended up on the #apple side of all places? Isn't apple like the least open of all? Is the user experience really that much better or are there other driving factors (And I ask this with the utmost respect for everything you have done for the industry) I'm just really wondering). You must have your reasons.

@aras@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

Someone lured me into tinkering with #blender font shader. What started out as shader load/compile time investigation ended up that, and render opt, and some fixen. Oof! https://projects.blender.org/blender/blender/pulls/119653

Would be interested to know! Both for the engine itself and our socials 💙

delegatevoid,
@delegatevoid@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@godotengine found the user by searching on mastodon. Can't remember how I found Godot but I remember I opened it, almost instantly closed it because it felt so alien at the time. This happened a few times over the course of one or two years, and then one day it clicked and the rest is history.

One of my kids wants to learn how to program. No problem, first thing, before anything else: version control (with #git). #programming

@AngryAnt@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@chrism Hey Chris I came across one of your Nix videos (thankyou for spreading the good word!) and noticed a Keybase icon in your dock.

In case you had not come across it, I figured I would toss a http://keyoxide.org recommendation - nicely handling the identity side of the Keybase equation.

I established myself there before someone at Zoom HQ trips over a cable, not bothering to plug it back in.

delegatevoid,
@delegatevoid@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@AngryAnt @chrism could you expand a little on this?
Keybase got taken over by zoom did it not? And it's now in the hands of ... How does keyoxide fit into all of this?

delegatevoid,
@delegatevoid@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@AngryAnt @chrism so it's all about identify verification, then I will take a look at it.
I was using Keybase primarily for it's chat and git features. I've never used zoom and things like Signal, Matrix, etc... just don't work here. I remember identity verification in the 90's with PGP public key servers.
Before Keybase I was using/worked on BItmessage for a while, and now I've resorted to using Delta.Chat.

delegatevoid, to windows
@delegatevoid@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

I'm not a fan of #windows but I am jealous of its ability to run #android apps. I'm surprised #linux doesn't have a compatibility layer similar to #wsl (at least that I know of).
All I know for now is #anbox which seems to be abandoned (?) and Waydroid which I can't use yet becuase #wayland just doesn't work for me. Any ideas?

delegatevoid,
@delegatevoid@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@AngryAnt today I will try to run on #wayland the entire day, see if I can get through my work stuff without issues.

delegatevoid,
@delegatevoid@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@AngryAnt As another example: I just tried to run the native Linux GLX version of Xonotic. It just stutters (audio and video) . Like 2 or 3 frames per second.

delegatevoid,
@delegatevoid@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@AngryAnt I'm running GNOME (I am one of those few people who really really like GNOME). I will give the whole gaming thing another try tonight after work.
During the day it's mostly VSCode, Firefox, Edge, Godot. I just tried Blender and it's the same thing... extremely slow and stutter.

I think the main issue is simply that I'm using NVIDIA.

delegatevoid, (edited )
@delegatevoid@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@AngryAnt Ubuntu 23.10 which is GNOME 45 although, interestingly enough, when running Wayland, the version is indicated as "Not Available"

Update: It also indicates that hardware rendering is simply not available. So that explains a lot
