I wrote this “guide” / thoughts on #Mastodon after re-joining the Fediverse in November 2022 (soon after some sort of Twitter-related crisis). This coincided with one of the larger migrations of #infosec folks to Mastodon.
I have kept this post semi-updated with a lot of interesting Mastodon/Fediverse-related resources as well as information for the infosec community here.

More follows has zero algorithm penalty here. There is no algorithm (spoon). The more people I follow, the more interesting my feeds get. There are good tools for management of everything, so be adventurous & follow lots of different folk.
🤛I can look at different feeds like local, federated, home, and more.
⭐(& other reaction buttons) are the❤️button but this only tells the author I like their post, nobody else.
🔁Boost🔁Repost etc moves info around. That shows something to my followers.

I can think of #Fediverse being like a fleet, with many types & sizes of ships. Different social platforms. Different sizes of servers. But all communicating & co-operating across the Fediverse. We're a fleet.
Multiple feeds reflect this eg:
🛳️Home includes everyone I follow from multiple social platforms, any servers.
⛴️Local=everyone on my ship (my server).
🚢Federated=1 step beyond, people that my locals are connected to, have followed or are searching.

Ch.9 #AltText
When uploading images try and describe the images in the alt text box, this is good for people using screenreaders, blind, partially sighted etc. Try to remember to include ppl.
Victorian medicine chest, which contains medications for pain relief, such as opium. It also includes a set of scales, weights, a pill tile, and a spatula. It was probably used in the home or by an apothecary.
I haven't visited the bird site for ages. Today when I checked out the site, I was greeted with this. Good. I don't want to visit Elon's far right website anyway. 👍 #twittermigration

The political party of which I've been a member for decades has just opened an account in Threads, as soon as it was possible. They have NOT opened a similar one in Mastodon, one year since the mass #TwitterMigration.
I'm outraged. How can it be that the values of this organisation are so far from mine at the moment.
The usual reason not to be in #Mastodon: "we have to stay in Twitter because it's where people are". Now they're in #Threads? WTF.
